Want to start Oil Painting, no idea where to start.
So, I really want to start oil painting but I've never done it before and I have no idea where to start!
Is there a good book anyone could recommend to teach me the fundamentals on how to get started?
Also what sort of paints/brushes/etc should I buy? is there a solid beginners set anyone could recommend or a suitable brand?
The video Donato Giancola - the mechanic gives a good overview of oil painting and preparation.
Browse the web (google, youtube) for beginner tutorials.
Try a small setup first -> some people don't like working with thinners and oils.
Don't like chemicals Water Mixable Oil Paint could be more practical. Haven't used them...yet.
Some different size flat brushes/egbert brushes.
a small round brush or liner brush for details and for signing your amazing work .
refined linseed oil
Odourless white spirit.
Rags for cleaning, whiping.
Doesn't matter, your own preference -> white, disposable, wood,homemade,..But take one that's big enough like 30x40cm (12x16")
You can run out of mixing space fast.
Cadmium yellow light
Cadmium red medium
Check out ashley wood to see what you can do with earthy tones and a bit of blue and white.
After you played with the medium and you want to go further the choices mainly depend on what you want to paint. ->portraits (more warm colors), landscapes(more greens),little bit of everything. Other colors are mostly for ease of use, less mixing to get to the right color.
Carmin or allizerin crimson
Transparant oxide red
