scribbles from life
not much this time cuz I'm working on a bigger piece which takes up all my time...
Today's life drawings. For some reason we had a new model who wore clothes that exposed her legs and arms. So yeah I was a bit stunned that I wasn't getting my weekly dose of live nudity. I mainly focused on her exposed parts and didn't pay attention to her clothes because I didn't come there to draw tanktops and jeans.
Arm studies. Gonna do these from memory tomorrow.
I realized a couple of days ago that I have a problem with drawing people just standing so I practiced. Trying to figure out things here so it's not pretty to look at but hey that wasn't the point.
Moleskine sketch for shits and giggles
so yeah last time i complemented all these studies and practices but i think we should see some more developed pieces to really put your studies to use! doing personal work can also be very helpful! anyways cool updates!
kevin_ You're so right. I've noticed this too and I'm glad to say this update has one finished piece.
I've been dealing with a lot of shit in my personal life lately so that's why updates have been a bit scarce.
Vanderpoel nose studies on black paper.
Applied what I learned from those studies and did a bunch of noses from memory.
Sp. I think I'm getting worse at this.
Here's a finished piece called Aqua that I started a week ago. Oh man the things I learned. I learned to appreciate soft round brushes more. I just kinda discarded them before but from now on I'm gonna use them a lot more. I just fell in love with the process. The thing looked hideous in the beginning stages but I didn't give up. I just knew I had to make it work. (Tim Gunn reference anyone ?) Once I got the major sections laid down the piece kinda finished itself. I tried creating a some sort of lightning which I haven't done ever. I don't know how I did but there's a first time for everyone. I don't think there's nothing more to say. Basically I just watched tons of funny Japanese videos on Youtube while painting for hours.
Today's life drawings. We had the same model again and this time she was naked. Why she had clothes on last week remains a mystery.
More Vanderpoel nose studies:
Hot chicks for the sake of hot chicks. I've been feeling a bit down lately but painting women always cheers me up. I'm also playing around with soft and hard edges.
Caleb-Brown Yup that's her. Glad to see that I'm starting to nail likenesses. And yeah my quote kicks ass in this modern age of installations and other nonsense art shit.
arms from memory
practiced noses from memory
Moleskine sketch with robots and horrible anatomy
a sp that looks a bit wonky because the face gets cut in half

Dude, bizarre amount of studies on here! What strikes me the most is your unmistakable tendency to stylize. It's like you're exaggerating form to kind of zoom in and understand what's going on, wich is a good thing, but not always. I think it's key to work on your proportions, the anatomy is coming along good though! Keep it up
XpRnz Thanks man for the critique. Yeah my latest studies have been highly stylized because I've been getting into using the basic hard and soft brushes. They force you to concentrate on major tones. Won't be a permanent thing, though
Lately I've been... you know... drawing. No digi paintings this time.
Vanderpoel lip studies (I know these are boring as fuck, they even bore me, gotta change things up)
Today's life drawings
During the longer pose I tried concentrating on major forms rather than on tiny insignificant details. I ended up having more fun than usual just by letting go.
Moleskine sketch with heads and a couple of eyes. Looking at those heads I see so many mistakes. My understanding of the brow area is still a bit fuzzy and the placement of noses is off. So...
...I practiced head constructing. Two pages of me just trying to wrap my mind around how heads work with the help of kchen.
Been painting from life.
SP. Getting worse.
These heads are seriously starting to piss me off. I SUCK BALLS WHICH MEANS I HAVE TO PRACTICE HARDER. GET BACK TO BASICS. STUDY THE HELL OUT OF LOOMIS.
Did this one finished piece. Realized a couple of things while doing it. I have to step up my anatomy, heads, clothes etc. The list goes on. I'm just glad I'm done with the piece which means that I can focus on other things now.
This thread might go dead for awhile (emphasis on the word might) so don't freak out if I'm not updating. This doesn't mean that I won't be drawing, though.
Here's a small update for you guys to let you know that I'm still alive. Been hella busy with major stuff in my life so haven't had time to practice as much as I'd like to. Things are going to get back to normal in about three weeks.
I'm still around. Conscription in Finland sucks...
Revidescent Oh you make me blush. Thanks man for the kind words.
derp bump update just one more week...
Hello Internet ! Been in hibernation mode for a while.
This page sums up my life for the past four weeks.
I admit it: last month was pretty quiet. But fear not, everything is about to change because from now on I'm going to update this sketchbook DAILY all through December. I've set myself a goal to do at least a SP per day. Plus I'm gonna do a ton of digi studies whenever I have free time. Hopefully I'm going to able to pull this off.
The first SP. Blah. This is why I have to get better.
Crap from life.
Figures from imagination.
2nd out of 31
Quickie study. Just trying out some new ways of painting the eyes by using layers.
Man your putting out great work! I think your form and structure is really good along with the organic look of what. What I can suggest though, judging by your observational drawing, is to practice contour style drawings. I say this because your doing well capturing the structure along with volume but I feel that at times your proportions are off so I suggest you try out some blind contours as well as reading up on the fundamentals of using negative space to draw. You can then go back to practicing using the constructive method but studying the contour method will really help you zone into your problem areas and fix em up.
kamikazel33t Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm definitely gonna try out some contour drawing during this month's SP marathon.
jamsession Thanks man. You made my day. The reason why the Aqua piece came out so blurry was because I had trouble saving a JPG for teh intarwebs. Any help would be appreciated wink wink.
Might as well share these super old master studies.
3rd of 31. GRINDGRINDGRIND
headzzz + loomis
nice updates! you wrote this a while back but even if you are having some hard times with your personal life its best to try and find some time for art, hope things get better so you can practice some more!!
kevin_ I've put all that shit behind me. It's all a thing of the past now. Looking back, all I can do is laugh. Nevertheless, I appreciate your concern and the kind words. At the moment I have tons of time for practice which kicks ass.
4th of 31. The grind continues. I bet someone has experienced the following: Your back hurts like hell but you just keep on drawing. Eventually you can't take the pain anymore and you just quit. I hate it when this happens.
Today's SP session was a total fiasco. At first I didn't take all the fuzz about proportions seriously but I totally get all of it now. Apparently I also have problems with drawing with a tablet. These issues are now my top two priorities on my SP rampage. Values can come later.

Pretty cool how you make such good painting without going into detail!
Elias Leonard Thanks man. To be honest the piece is IMHO hideous but I posted it anyway. No holds barred, man.
6th of 31. Today Finland celebrated its 95th Independence Day. Hurray !
Holy crap sir! your line quality amazes me the more i look at it, you have been getting crazy good with faces lately! id love to see some muscle studies, and some stuff from head that thing is a muscle too you have to work it! hahaha anyways glad to see so much hard work good luck man!
will deffinetly drop by in the future
lionheartGFX Aw, you make me feel all tingly inside. Imagination stuff is coming up, I promise.
7th of 31. Nothing fancy here, just trying to focus on proportions.
hey man just a suggestion, try and bear always how much Time it takes you to draw each sp, i know efficench its not your focus right now nor its line economy but its still good for you to know how much time does it take to attain certain quality, and try a mix of quick and long portraits that is gonna help you tons in this grinding month keep going!!!! im starting fires with my lines too this month! lets both work hard!
Cool! I see you are working on your proportions! I also noticed on lionheart's sb that you were looking into improving expressions as well as figures. I think you would learn a lot from studying methods used by animators in cartoons like stretch and squash as well as using asymmetrical shapes to really bring life to your drawings. There are some good books I can suggest like Michael Mattesi - Force: Life Drawing For Animators and The Vilppu drawing manual both are very focused on trying to achieve a lot of dynamics in their figures each in their own way.
Feelin overall progress
