Hey guys. I could really use some critique on what I should do to refine this work in progress for part of my senior project.
Here I am depicting a part of my storyline involving the ritual in which the inhabitants of these caves burn a powerfully magic flower once a year to release a spirit. The spirits are always different. Some are good while others are evil. This particular concept is showing the release of a menacing spirit.
Let me know what y'all think, and thanks for your time!
Looks pretty good to me. The environment is fine (although you could make it a lot cooler if you worked off some pictures of actual stalagmites and stalactites--right now it's "generic fantasy underground rocks.")
I'd suggest you show the monster a bit more descriptively--i.e., rotate the form in space along one axis or another. The head-on view (at least I think it's a head-on view--those orange slashes are eyes, right?) feels sort of stylized and cartoony to me.
Getting those stalactites and stalagmites right should help a lot with showing scale.
I don't think you're getting much impact out of the spirit. It feels to me like I'm viewing it from a relatively safe space in the environment. Not sure how to correct this except to rework the composition. If you're doing a series of images, you might use this composition to instead show the process of the spirit manifesting, then in the next painting show the spirit manifested from a more dynamic perspective.
I like the vine-like tendrils of the spirit, but I feel like there could be a little more reference to plant life in either the creature's design or the visual effect of the summoning. I agree with Giacomo about better describing the form of the spirit. I'd also think a bit more about that platform. This is more subjective, but to me the spikes seem cliche and uninformative about the culture depicted. If you're going to stick with the spikes, I would at least arrange so that they're either placed according to some geometric symmetry, or vary dramatically in scale, placement, and density.
