A little late to start, but I think these are the clothes he will wear:
Girsteroth: cool start, though the first thing that comes to mind is that if he bends over he will kill himself
Kahel - that beast's head is epicly big, I'd love to see the giant body in the background. I think the asian element is cool, the beast could be like a siberian sabertooth tiger
Dread reaper- this is awesome so far, love the pose. You have so much bird imagery that those eyes need to scream evil bird. And perhaps there could be a looming shadow of his prey coming over the cliff
fleshing mine out some more, just having fun with this one
It's been over a year since I last CHOWed, and since I'm in the middle of adding some characters to my portfolio I have no excuse not to join in. So I started sketching.
I rarely do realistic characters simply because I don't think it's that much fun. I prefer threading the line between serious fantasy and silliness.
First one was a bit too oafish, and the second one reminded me more of a whaler. Which could be fine, but not what I was after.
This one I can work with. Details usually change halfway through painting process, but that's half the fun.
Those are quick sketches designs I have been going with, I'm in the process of picking one and refining him.
Do not hesitate to give feedback on those you think are interesting or not. Watch out! We've got a fan of Mickey Mouse over here!
Here's my take so far. needs a lot of work, I wanted the markings to resemble a snowy owl or something. Mask needs lots of work too.
Youarenotalone - a good start. He looks very "weathered" with the scars and the way his attire is all ragged.
Kahel - Can't wait to see this finished, although his outfit looks a little light for arctic conditions.
Parsakoira - sweet action shot I like how you've added some interesting shapes to his armor, something I'm struggling with in my design.
Tsujni - very cool design with the textures
Audit - I have to agree with you about the shapeless thing. But it looks like you've got it covered in your attempt.
JanJager - all great designs, I can't decide which I like best.
Kerah - nice start, lots of interesting shapes in there.
Zenarion - nice, I like the colors on this, even though they might be very "stealthy"
Trolljack - love the bark armor idea, I have to say I like #5,2 and 7 the best
Abrazuno - nice start, I like that you went with the nonhuman. Can't wait to see the final!
Blazinwolf - Those are some great sketches, I think I like the last one the most. Keep going!
Klkeewyck - That's awesome, I like where you're going, that spear is sweet
Einen - I love the vulture with goggles!
Kratul - Those are some sweet designs. I think I like #2 and #6 the most.
That's all for now, more crits/comments as time allows.
Had a hard time deciding on how to illustrate my character for this. In the end I decided on something simple and moody.
Aiming for a sense of ruthlessness and showing she has near perfect accuracy.
Any preferences? Posted on FB and I got nearly 50/50 feedback:/

Trolljack- I like the first one, it looks like she killed the animal so quickly it still hasn't fell to the ground.
My sketch, then I'll ink, photograph, and color.
Love means never having to say "you're a special snowflake."
Take a look at my sketchbook
I think I like the right on better, Trolljack
yeahh trolljack i like the right one too, the composition seem better with the characther on one of the thirds of the image, and the characther occupies more space in the composition, just add something to the left to keep the eyes in the flow of the drawing
Thanks guys:] I agree, more character focus on the right hand image, I'll get to it!

I like 2, 4 and 5. Especially number 4's silhouette for her trouser thing and
5's puffy trousers as well. I like the shapes those create.
Good job everybody.
Trying some thumbs.
Hello everyone. First time noob here. I'm loving all of the stuff you guys are putting out for this challenge.
Here is some wip on possible character designs that I might expand upon. I'm thinking about going with the design on the right. I'm kinda digging the native ethnic vibe he gives off
"She lost her eye and hand from hunting a very rare (and vicious) creature indigenous to the frigid northern wastelands. Now, she wears its skin for warmth. Fair trade."
@Dread Reaper thanks for the advice, I know I should really add fur or something but I've never drawn fur before so I'm kind of delaying that -__-
here's my update
Some color studies, figure that since he has a natural pelt his winter coat would be a shaggier version. The "bulb"s are insulating leather pouches to protect the joints from the cold, overly large to allow freedom of movement. Also working out what the four legged position would be. Next thing to do is figure out the illustration....I'll try to get some critiques in the next post some great concepts so far.
I love the lost eye and the knife hand. Honestly one of the few I've seen so far that's taken that part of the brief into consideration.
I like either the guy in front of the mammoth or the bottom right one. Two cents=given.
I'm digging the right one frankly because it puts more emphasis on the character. I'm saying this because this is a trap I have fallen into many times, making an illustration at the expense of the character. I love the pose though: the way he's walking away from the corpse all bad ass and calm makes me think there's going to be a slow-motion explosion behind him any second.
Personally I like the top right and the bottom left best.
We wants your Cintiq. Yes, preciousssssss, we do....
Yeah the stance seems really static and uninteresting. Maybe she could be kneeling nursing a wound sustained in battle? I think the natural movement created by the ribs behind the character would play nicely into that.
Dude keep pushing that figure, I can't wait to see how it turns out!
Thanks for the advice, I tried to incorporate the prey somehow, tell a little story somehow. I like how you'rs is coming. I'd like to see a little more of the "hunter" aspect to the character in terms of design as it seems very much like a mage of some sort standing in the forest...
So I think I am probably about done with this one. I feel like if I keep going I'll start over-working it to death. Any final crits would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

This is the culmination of my first thoughts. Might make time for a more finished piece this weekend.
First post in aaaages, but saw this thread today and just couldnt resist! Never done a CHOW before, I must say it's kind of intimidating with so much awesome stuff here.
My original concept was to go for a more Waylander kind of character, one of my favorites of Gemmell's. The consenus from feedback offline was to go for the female version. I don't know if I should keep the spear and crossbow or go for a recurve bow instead. I'd still like to keep a spear though, for self defence against predators or whatnot. I don't know, what do you guys think?
@Dread_Reaper, that hunter is looking great!
@bangalore_monkey, nice...very appealing style and design.
