I try to simplify the colors I see and roughly map stuff out using those few colors; trying to keep it clean-looking at first by using very opaque strokes. If a color I already have in my "palette" won't work for a certain area I'll make a new color, but I try not to blend stuff together until later into the painting.
Basically I try to plan out all the colors I'll use from the start, I'm still not great at it but am getting better. If I need to have a slightly different value somewhere else later, I'll take one of my colors and apply it with some transparency. I never use a blending tool, actually. I just work in varying transparencies. My brush is set to be more transparent the more pressure is applied.
Kind of difficult for me to explain it since I don't ever really think about it in such a way, so I hope I at least made SOME sense .
Not much to post, gotta try and get more done for my next update. I tried applying what I've learned thus far using photos as reference this time. It's really daunting. I'm so accustomed to copying what I see but this way I'm actually building upon a form... A lot of work to be done before I feel comfortable doing this, I guess.
Also, man, I've tried everything else I can think of to change my thread thumbnail. Do I have to delete every attachment in my first post to change it or what?
I was hesitant to post anything when the forums finally came back up since I wasn't sure how stable they were. In the meantime I've been really busy programming for another project so I haven't been drawing much at all. Updates here will probably be slow for awhile but I don't want to drop my studying so I'll try to keep up. I need a team of people to harass me when I go too long without posting .
Anyway, here are some more head sketches from photo refs using the Loomis method. Most of them were very quickly done.
Your sketches look very good. Some of them have too short a distance from the eyes to the top of the head, like the head at the middle bottom and the top right. Work on that and you'll do a leap with the Loomis heads.
First harassment: these are one and a half months old! Give us some fresh graphite.
Thankyou nouge . I do think I draw the brow a little too high maybe half the time; need to work on that. Got to get around to doing a lot more of these but keep them less detailed. I wanted to fill a page with studies but they just took me too damn long and I've been busy lately. Will definitely keep pushing on this.

Thanks, everyone! Definitely, Razz, one of my biggest weaknesses is imagination. Which is why I've been working so hard on these head studies. Trying to gradually tech myself how to build stuff from the basics and lessen my reliance on reference. That being said... I've been working hard to try and fill a new sketchbook with studies. Almost half way to half way there!
I'm feeling quite a bit more confident after doing these for a few days. Most of these were done from imagination/memory aside from the Loomis plate copies, of course. Would really appreciate any criticisms that may help me out if I'm getting something consistently wrong. Got a lot more of the book left to go through. GOTTA FILL THIS SKETCHBOOK!
Hey man, good job on those heads! Your imagination heads are taking on a consistent form, which'll be great when you iron some mistakes out of them. The main ones I see are that you give the cranium too little volume (alternatively that the facial features are too large, especially eyes), and that you're not overlapping some of the volumes of the face as much as they should. Compare the noses in your imagination heads with the ones from Loomis or photo, and you'll find that you're trying to avoid letting eyes, cheek-bones or mouths get overlapped by the nose, although this will happen at extreme angles. Practice tough angles like the one in the middle of this picture to get a feel for this overlapping, at least I found it very helpful:
I'll definitely put a lot more focus on practicing "extreme" angles. Specifically ones involving foreshortening since I really do need to improve on that. Most of this stuff is, again, from memory. I'll work on some more photo studies next.
My goal by the time I fill all the pages in this sketchbook is to see marked improvement in my understanding of how to draw heads using the Loomis method.

but I think you are too concentrated on these helplines, so you loose easily the overview over your proportions and stop experimenting with non-given lines like lower jaw forms. Try to draw with fewer helplines, maybe just the circle, earline and horizontal and vertical middle line. Merry christmas
