Character of the Week #278
Design a colossal leviathan and its vessel
DEADLINE: SUNDAY 26th FEB 9PM GMT+1 (8PM GMT)
Check your timezone!
The Leviathan is the devourer of worlds, destroyer of beings. It is a colossus that travels from world to world through mystical veils and consumes whatever crosses its path. With each new world, the Leviathan takes a being as a vessel, which acts as its herald ahead of its arrival.
Your task is to design this huge creature and the human vessel it may use on its arrival to earth.
- The Vessel can be Male OR Female although the Leviathan is genderless
- Can be any style or genre
- Can be any era
- Upon the Leviathan taking control, the being dies and becomes a hollow shell/ corpse for the leviathan to manipulate.
- Despite its power, the Leviathan still likes to toy with its food and will use the vessel to spread fear and panic
- The vessel must be human
In addition to the brief, if you do not follow these rules, you will not be included in the poll.
- Files must be named: CHoW#278_Username (Files with any other names such as final.jpg or even chow278final.jpg will not be accepted)
- Finals must be posted in the finals thread BEFORE the deadline
- Final post must include the CHoW number and the artists username at the bottom of the image
- At least 3/4 of the focus character must be visible
- Final images must be accompanied with a basic character sheet in a separate image Character sheets should at the very least show a sketch of the front and back of the character and a couple of early thumbnails/silhouettes.
- Follow the brief!

Interesting concept. Though I do have a question in regards to the vessel.
The vessel is simply controlled or "possessed" so to speak, by the leviathan before it personally arrives to the planet it will consume/destroy. Once it arrives there, it keeps the vessel around for fun but will appear itself in its natural/normal form. Right?
Nice one, def gonna be in on this one, a two weeker as well. A question though, does the char sheet need to be for both the creature and vessel, or just the vessel since he/she is the character? Prolly gonna do it for both anyways, but just in case, something happens...
Dibs on Newt Gingrich for vessel!
Cool beans. I was late to join the last one so I'm glad I have two weeks and an open schedule to participate this time.
I guess some good examples that come to mind are Galactus - Silver Surfer, Unicron - Galvatron, and Pyron (Darkstalkers) - and whatever those metal things were that served him.
Thinking of Unicron made me want to set mine in the 80's with the host being the lead singer of a hair metal band and the leviathan as this mashup of bones and chaotic debris. It travels from planet to planet escorted by a procession of previous heralds so that the entire scene looks like a scene from an metal album cover drifting in space.

So so sounds like Galactus + Silver Surfer his herald . . . .
Really curious about what people will come up with LOL
y'know i can't resist epic meal time. Don't ask why he chose to go after a small tribal culture loosely based off african/native american influences. perhaps he just wants a snack before heading off to the big cities.
To add to Mass Effect and Silver Surfer, how about the Necromongers from Chronicles of Riddick? And the Fifth Element, two of my favourite films, great art styles. Got a feeling this topic is going to produce some awesome stuff O_O
Artfix: Paralax also came to mind for this topic
Ok today at work I did some sketching and came up with this thumbnail, I drew over it with a Ps brush, cuz my scanner's a piece of shit, added a pic of earth to show some scale, that circular ring around the creature is a wormhole that it uses to travel...still wondering what to do about the vessel...
Quasar: wow, that's cool!
Ok, I'm in
here's an idea that came up in my mind,
maybe i'll try something else later
mine is an astronaut that leviathan has taken on his way to the earth.
I'm in trouble with the scale too (but that's what activities are for )
Artfix Hey, thx for the suggestion. My first instinct is always to just start sketching the first thing that comes to mind. Not happy with the composition in that one so probably wont go with it as an illo though.
Maybe i could get some help deciding on some of these basic designs?
Quasar Love the feel and lighting
notpill Using an astronaut as the messenger is brilliant, good start
Gadbury Tentacles, like it man. Great atmospheric perspective.
Great start everybody, I hope mine will measure up.
quasar - So this could totally just be me, but when I first saw your image all I could see was this:
I think it might be because the undersides of the arms and claws don't have any reflected light, or recede too much, tonally, into the background? Could totally just be me, though, so feel free to call me crazy. XD
Hey Drygrass, yes I kinda noticed that Leviathan`s right arm seems to be shorter... (if that`s what you said), I`m figuring that out, trying to change position or something.
But, if you`re talking about this "feminine" pose, it`s because of the creature being androgynous. Well, I don`t know if it`s a good way to picture that =/
Hi Quasar, i think what Drygrass said is that the pose is looking like those bodybuilder poses for contest, just too pose, kinda look at me in the picture.
The both arms have almost the same pose/gesture, you could change one of the arms pose.
Hope it helps

Finally finished http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=238380
Wanted to draw something on a massive scale. Also toying with the idea of making the creature a beautiful sight to behold.
Quasar and Gadbury...those are awesome!
I love this theme...gigantic cosmic monstruosities are always cool! Here some early thumbnails of some ideas I have for the leviathan...I don't know what to do with the vessel yet.
