I'm loving your dedication in learning the human form. Keep at it though! For those gestures exaggerate those poses. Find the tilts in the hips and shoulders and establish the weight bearing leg. I like the rendering on your quick morning doodle.
"Observing the world around me"
thanks Colour Coded, great advice that ill use im coming up with my own method of digital painting using the mixbrush and smudge tool for different things that i never used before along with the dodge tool for my highlights., and definately im still really dont know much about weight and how to depict it but i think ill get it in time.
I'm liking all the perspective and car studies- they helped me a tonne with figure drawing!
I dunno about all the fancy brush stuff in PS - I usually stick to the boring ones - but whatever motivates you is good stuff and your rendering is getting stronger as you go.
FDZ school, on youtube is a really neat reference for digital painting. He usually sticks to the default brushes- but the results he gets are way-way better than anything I can produce. Check them out .
hey rhubix im actually doing something similar to Cryptcrawlers method
by the way heres a WIP enviro study, and ive seen almost all of feng zhus videos theyre amazing
- i made my own custom brushes(in like 2 seconds) for the foilage on here

i get really bored with studying allllll day, ill post my gestures later just too tired to scan
so i do doodle rendering sheets like this to keep myself motivated this is just all technique theres no real foundational stuff inside these doodles. just playing around to relax after workin .

- probably not going to post as often anymore, spending most of my time studying at the moment, studying the foundations as much as i can, anatomy, proportion, basics of design, composition, perspective, color theory etc,

crappy quick enviro sketch. painted after studying successful drawing for a bit and watching some FZD school vids.
-working on my perspective and all that.got ways to go. for some reason i get discouraged a lot and think ill never reach the level i want to, but i guess every artist does. guess i just gotta keep pushing.

thanks flakspost i guess sometimes when i think about how much more i want to know its daunting, just gotta keep workin
Thx for swinging by my SB and I appreciate the kind words. You've sure got a ton of variety in terms of media and subjects, so it's great to see that you don't shy away from subjects that can challenge you. If I can offer some advice, it would be to continue studying the figure and gesture to enhance the energy in your characters. If you're working from reference, don't shy away from some subtle exaggeration from time to time, you may find that it allows you a little freedom, and you can always pull back from that if things get away from you. I try to consider the weight and environment for my figures, it tends to help me create a sense of character, which in a perfect world makes for fluid figurative work. It's easier said than done, and believe me, for every drawing that might come together, there are plenty of b-sides on the cutting room floor, but without the experimentation it's tough to get anywhere. If you get a chance to join a life group I'd highly recommend that too, you can't beat the wonderful subtleties which that experience tends to provide.
Anyways, keep at it, looking forward to seeing your progress!
wow thanks for the wonderful advice! and ill definately keep up with studying the figures and gesture, glad you can stop by Mike
Hey there! Dude, after feeling the way you feel, about you know, like: "I'm not gonna be able"and stuff like that, just think to yourself that this is all a matter of consistency, I've failed to see that so many times, and it has slowed me down a lot, now for me it's all about learning a bit every day, and that's enough, you'll get there eventually. And by the way some stuff looks cool, I like the ideas but I would go back to core painting man. I mean, it's great to have a great grasp on PS tools and be able to use them to get more possibilities and all, but for me it's quite much more important to get the foundation right. For example the last picture has a very cool idea on it, that looks nice in terms of tone and feel. But the values are confuse and there's too much noise to the picture. With better foundational values and stuff your speed would get much better and you would increase significantly the clearness of the work. All this said it's been very intereseting to check out the progress and the will to get it done, so kudos on that and keep it up, you'll eventually get there to realise there's always a trip ahead!
hey thanks a lot Suira i actually saved that comment/critique in a word document to remind me to work on my foundational skill, helped me a lot thanks again
speedpaintings 5-20 minutes each. put together a little Speedpainting brush set that helped a little. -time to do some gestures

quick nightime sketch: EPIC GALACTIC BANANAMAN( no ref) i have no idea how i came up with this.
- once i get time to scan got a whole load of Gesture& perspective stuff to post, goodnight people.
comic idea, pen sketches in my Moleskine pocket sketchbook(no reference)
basically its about a Magic Investigator and theres a system called GIN which is similar to the internet and it has a giant system that is miles high with archives that contain spheres with all the worlds information. its seperated into sections and theres a librarian for each pod. the theme is a mix between technology and magic but not necessarily futuristic i guess more alien/Arcane with unique arcanic hieroglyphs.

WIP caricature of jim carrey, though im guilty of using the color picker a little im learning how i should exaggerate forms. just my first time trying caricatures may try more may not.
-was just thinking maybe doing caricatures can be a way to earn a little money possibly u never know.i think im also going to buy some oils and learn how to use those too.
skimming through your sb I see that you are working hard and trying to improve,I would suggest though if you want to accelerate the process of learning you need to go back to the basics and focus on them for a while-
construction and perspective, manikin figure construction, life studies focused on measuring, simple geometric shaped value studies, composition, anatomy.
I guess what i am trying to say is that you want your learning process to be a constructive event in which you build on previous knowledge ,otherwise learning can become frustrating and confusing.
thanks graypersona and thats exactly what im trying to do! im mostly posting the work from imagination not all my studies. ive done pages and pages of composition notes, perspective drawings from successful drawing, and yes anatomy studies, ive also memorized most of the basic proportions for the figure. i do these imaginative stuff to apply all that im learning, believe me im trying to get solid Concrete foundations.
thanks for the advice!!definately going to focus and work harder on them tho
random sketches&wips and a finearty painting called dreams(haha crappy but i taught myself oils in a day ),time to get some more studyin done. .
the first guy is a silhouette sketch i took too far lol.

Remember not to burn yourself out with studies! Sometimes I feel like when I think of it as something that I must do, it weighs me down. But it looks like you're having a good time with it all and doing pieces from your head Keep it up!
thanks pnate i try to study as much as possible but i also have to incorporate those studies into imaginative work or it feels like im not learning anything, and im trying to get better at design at the same time so why not? thanks ill keep that in mind
thumbnails, some slightly larger.pen then pencil trying to think mostly about the basic design and not about having everything correct.will post my gestures when i have more time to scan.
woke up in the middle of the night. had a dream where i remembered what my older cousin who died when i was younger looked like and drew this quickly in about 5 minutes or so nothin big.
sketchy stuff, thumbnail things
havent posted for a while , mostly just studying . pics took with phone because its faster, studies, gestures and one quick imaginative figure(the first guy)i fucked up on how his arms connect to his chest. i never smudge when i draw usually but i was trying to come up with a good way of doing it, using the kneaded eraser to cut out forms.
sorry about some of the picture quality.
