Much thanks for checking out my sb!

I've decided to take a few concepts from this thread and bring them to life. I've been doodling for years but only just gotten serious. I know I should be studying anatomy, doing still life, etc, but I'm using these concepts as a way to discover specific areas that I need work on.
These are the first two concepts: Drunk Alien and Living Tattoo
Things I need to improve on (please add to this list!):
*Clarity: It isnt at all clear that he's drunk (I will add a dropped bottle of booze)
*Lighting: I feel like I botched this.
*Drapery: I'm having a hard time fleshing out his cloak. Need to do studies
*Metallic and Glass surfaces: The car in the bg (I know, its hard to tell what it is)
Only a sketch at this point.I know it's not yet apparent how I'm addressing the theme, but I've got an idea...

More progress on the Living Tattoo
alright, heres a few studies from posemaniacs and some more progress on that monk...

almost ready to color this one... crits would be much appreciated!
Heres something different... two quick studies referenced from movie screenshots. I really enjoyed doing these, so more are on the way.
The second one is a recent DSG submission that I never posted.
Hey, WRappiii...thanks for checking out my sketchbook. Things are looking good in here. I really like your values on your black and white images.
With the drunken alien, there's a couple of tangents in the image...like the martini sign coming out of his head and the way the cockpit window disappears behind him. The rendering of the face looks really good, but the rendering on the clothes fall a little short.
Also, for the DSG submission, not sure how I feel about the black background. I know it's space, but it's just not working that well here. Makes the foreground and middle ground seem almost like cut-outs.
Keep it up and good luck!
@bish0p2004: thanks a ton for the helpful crits I totally agree about the aliens clothes, but for me it's progress! And I totally forgot about the bg on the DSG worm... maybe I'll try to fill out that sky some time...
heres two little cartoons in a style i've never attempted. really fun to do!
Thanks for checking out my sketchbook.
Nice studies of the movie screenshots, I really like the first one. Looking forward to see more off them.
Oo, that lizard man sends shivers up my spine. Great textures. I don't really know how I feel about the position of the martini glass on the background. It disappears into his head, it's a bit distracting to me. Can't wait to see it colored.
I like the armor on the worm of the other upload. Awesome ideas going on here. Keep up the work!
@ErinLein: Thanks! i totally agree about the martini sign, gotta find another solution...
@Topcross: Thanks for your interest I'll be stopping by your sb again soon
An update on the monk. I'm completely re-doing him. I'm not sure if i'm even going to stick to the "Living Tattoo" theme but I don't know...
So I like the addition of the robes as it seems to frame his head better (and it's another opportunity to practice clothing). However there is something terribly wrong with that head... Advice on specifically that would be awesome.
PS the face is basically a space holder for now, I havent put more that a minute or two of work on the features... but crits on his head shape/size would be great!

@will123will: thanks, friend
tiny update here: I hit a brick wall while trying to paint the monk's face so I decided to practice by painting a planar head from a (2D) reference.
It was pretty hard and I wouldn't call it done at this point but I'm satisfied.
May do one or two more studies of human faces before continuing on that monk.

Cool stuff, I love the lizardman.
I really like the texture you used on post number 5's head.
the few who have commented here seem to like the drunk alien so here he is in color.
I blurred the background in order to showcase the character and because it is unfinished.
Did I do good?
Edit: Just so you all know, this pic has a bit of a jpeg artifact though it is only barely visible...

here's something new! I have been accepted to do some illustrations for an online collectible card game called Sphere. I am super psyched to be getting some real world experience!
here is a card I'm working on. The title is "Minion".
The head of the alien character blow me away. Great texture and the 3D-feeling is superb. Love his lips and the eye. But on the other hand, the head is so much better than the rendering of the other image parts, that it doesn't want to fit in. Perhaps you can try to take some more time working on the body. But a good start nonetheless =)
For the latest work I would recommend to search some references for the body. That could help a lot to improve the anatomy. And you may rethink the lightsource a bit. Right now, it looks like some light comes from the left side, but I think, the fire is more in front of the character, isn't it?
I'm looking forward to see the progress. Have fun! =)
youre doing a great job working hard. i like the monks a lot, and you did a great job studying the ref.
id love to see the space-slug thing continued
on the last image, his left thigh seems to me to begin too high, it should start a bit lower, leaving more room for the pelvis hip bone. my anatomy skills arent great but thats what comes to mind
and the 1st monks 3rd eye is a bit too big imho
but great work and keep it up!
Thanks for the tip about the smudge and good looking start on the card!
He who has a why to live can bear almost any how.
The textures on the alien's skin look really nice!
Good work You've managed to make that alien very expressive. If you're looking for anatomical reference material, asides from googling various body parts have you tried posemaniacs? A free resource giving male and female figures in assorted poses which you can rotate, hours of fun!
If I knew what I was doing, I'd have quit by now...
I like Drunk Alien ''especially the head'' and Worm or Slug looking good.
Whoa, great job with the coloring on the alien and congrats on the illustration gig.
@Valyavande: Thanks so much for checking out my sb. Bonus points for helpful crits
@aks9: Always nice to hear kind words! I will probably finish off that space worm some time... and I agree about the thigh crit (though I was too lazy to much about it )
@thinksimplybig: You're welcome and thank you!
@JokerKillJoy: Thanks, my friend.
@kruffles: Thank you! Yes, posemaniacs has been a resource that I have neglected to use as of late...
@Kenans: Thanks, I'm definitely happy with the aliens head
@bish0p2004: Thanks, man. Though it is a humble volunteer job, I am absolutely psyched that I'm putting my work where it can be seen.
And here's the final version of the "Minion" card done for the Sphere CCG.
There is much I would change if I had all the time in the world, but it's just another rung in the ladder now... (fun fact: the picture is going to be like a third of this size when it's fit to the card)
As always, comments and critiques are appreciated...
I know it's too late now but it's too bad you didn't have a bit more time to refine your minion card/pic, like maybe making that fire brighter and adding more highlights, from said fire, on the minion. That said, overall I like how it turned out. Love them scars on the poor fella.
@CarbonBased: I wholeheartedly agree. I was testing out some adjustments to the lighting and somehow did not notice that it was too dark. Luckily, my friend at the Sphere CCG simply amplified the brightness which gave the flame a little extra glow as seen here. Must learn from mistake!
Here's a little update. The first two are the next card I'm doing for Sphere. The first one was too static considering the card's title is "Barreling Ogre", so the second one will take its place. The last bit was a warm-up study of this.
Critique if you dare
Hey WRappiii these new concepts are looking good. I actually prefer the first one, but I think it's because it's rendered better than the others.
As for the second one, I think it could be a lot more dynamic. I have an image drawn by someone else who did a very dynamic paintover of someone else' art in the CC forums, but I can't post it yet. I'll try to find out who did it and post it tonight. Later.
@bish0p2004: I preferred the first one, too, but the guy who I'm doing these for wanted a different pose and I was happy to oblige. A paintover could be pretty helpful and I would be thankful!
and here's a little update with a color test below it. I'm going for the look of an army laying siege to a castle wall.
PS: if they're too dark, please tell me as my monitor is not calibrated correctly
Hey, I couldn't find the artist who did the other drawing, so I decided to do one of my own. It's not that great and I did it really quick, but I think it has some "energy" to it. Let me know if it helps.
Thanks, bish0p! I am currently going through the process of changing the ogre's pose and this will be a big help
