This is amazing work. I really admire your attitude on this, and can clearly see massive improvement, especially in your understanding of light and shadow. This last portrait has a great amount of detail to it, and is really catchy imo. It could be fun to see a couple of self-portraits with an even more extreme face pose; a bit out of the natural perhaps : )
@Tebio: thanks tebio. i appreciate that comment but i'm still struggling with some head structure lol. haven't been studying as much as i should lately but i have been absorbing more knowledge on light/form/values. i also agree that i can and should be more dynamic with the head poses/expressions xD. i'll keep it in mind for sure!
@Aryeh: thank you jakeh :]
xD sort of difficult to discern the colors from the lighting situation in my room (a sort of dim yellow-ish light + monitor light wtf!!) D: will need to do a lot of color studies and read up more on color... and perhaps get better lighting... i did not use my lamp for this one as i did for the grayscale stuff.
Really nice mate, I think that if you only work with portraits, you will miss a lot of things, and other styles, but It's just anyones choice what they want to draw, so keep working, your work it's pretty awesome
@Egg0: thanks egg0 and do not worry i'm still drawing other things but have only been updating this thread xD.
busy tonight so tried going for a quick 'poster study' w/out the lamp (yet again xD). time to slave away on this art history paper D:
keep pushing the color, 2/8/2012 was such a cool start.
He who has a why to live can bear almost any how.
@thinksimplybig: thanks dude. yeah, i liked the turnout of that-- but the way i approached it was a bit weird as i didn't do a big block-in at the start... i was mainly focused on the nose haha. but yeah, not giving up on color!
lulz.. napped a great deal of my day today... not good! groggy. also, these last 3 SPs have been under poorly-lit condition because when i have that lamp in my face-- it's hard to discern colors! gotta start doing these SPs at an earlier time :3 anyway, no lamp again-- just the one light in the room iiin grayscale...
also, this is updated with some shit
Good to see some first colour attempts! I know, it's a pain in the ass at the beginning. But it's a good start! I'm sure something good can come out of it if you paint until the end. Nose looks good and has a nice colour variation. And somehow - I wouldn't worry to much about the lights situation (at least I never do and my room has shitty light), because life has all kind of light and it can't always be cool and artsy. It's still nice for practising.
And I need to admit, i totally like the eyes in #63!
Keep it up!
@Valyavande: thank you Val. i suppose you're right. we should be able to create some awesome images with any lighting situation i think one of the benefits of having strong direct lighting is that it helps to see form easier xD. at least, that's what i've observed from using my lamp also, i too was happy how the eyes turned out in that portrait!
so this is just how i normally tackle these SPs. 2 layers, then i just merge everything and work on a single layer. i should experiment with different approaches, ye?
man... i really want to get better wiz color-- tried to approach this 'seriously' at first but then it became really experimental. i was discovering it hard to be thinking about proper form/structure while deciphering color/values/temps and staring @ the mirror lol. i'll get the hang of it... just gotta keep doing em' !
@towy: thanks towy :]
a bit tricky with this one. figuring a few ways with 'holding' expressions. although not really holding but just putting on my expression when i look back at the mirror and then normal when looking back at monitor-- why did it take me this long to figure this out? LOL; well i will experiment more with different expressions to keep things 'fresh'
gif (might not loop-- open image in new tab if that's the case)
feels like i'm cheating myself here but i had to get a quick one out of the way-- heading out for a friend's party and it's also my brother's birthday lulz. so here are some quick lines-- i'll try to fit a 2nd one later tonight if i ever get back XD.
It's an interesting challenge. It kind of inspires me to do more self portraits.
I would suggest trying to draw different angles of your face. You seem to generally do the same angle over and over. Maybe do a side view or try an upward view or something. Vary it a little. Perhaps you could also draw other peoples portraits in the future. It might get boring drawing yourself over and over again.
To get better at color, I would look at what other do with skin tones. It's something I'm struggling with as well but I think it's good to watch tutorials. Their are several on youtube and conceptart is having a sale on their stuff right now. You might be over thinking it and you seem to be overwhelmed by color. Just take your time with it. Don't get so stressed over it.
You could also get a picture online of someone, bring it into Photoshop and use the eye dropper tool to see what the colors are. That is something I've been doing as well and it's been helpful understanding skin tones.
Also, perhaps you could draw out your self portrait and pick a main color and color your face in one color. Then map in the darks and lights with different colors and that will give you a good start and will keep you somewhat organized.
Hope this helps.
Their are some great self portraits in here so keep at it.
@Istmin52: hey thanks a lot istmin those are some very helpful tips. this thread is intentionally for SPs only but i do studies off photos as well. i think it's more of the darker-skin complexions i have trouble with. but you're totally right, i do get overwhelmed by color D: i'll try out some different angles as well-- the reason why i don't change up the angles as much is because i strain my eyes when i look at the mirror hehe. thx again for those suggestions, i will keep them in mind!
fffffuuu... i'm gonna cut my hair tomorrow sorry these last few SPs are herp/derp bullshit
@Aryeh: lol thx jakeh, i am disappoint in the last one xD.
@ryan mcshane: fuck yeah bro! awww... yeah it seems i've been doing too much soft brushes as of late D:
@Droid: sweet man. i think you should do it for sure thanks~
huehuehuehfdj saklfkl as;gjxgk v.xcm....sdgf asg i didn't actually wear my glasses for this but decided to draw em on all tacky n shit. lol
