I do not plan to backdate the thread I commence here. This is because there is simply too many drawings, and I wish to display new work.
If anyone wishes to see some previous studies or invention formulas please check the two links. My blog also contains sculpting, and other digital mediums that I work in.
My overall goal being here is the same as many of you I believe. Self improvement in my work, through the community critique.
I practice my anatomy and drawing skills alongside my personal study of digital sculpting and modeling, whilst working part time. I graduated university in 2009 with a mixed skill set, and began drawing with professional intent a little less than a year ago in order to produce better models.
If anyone has any comments, advice or words of inspiration of the times it feels like an insurmountable challenge, please post here and on my blog, I will be greatly received.
Hope hope my journey is interesting to who ever follows it, and be prepared because I post the good and the bad days. Much of your sketchbooks and community spirit has inspired me already.
Thanks in advance for reading/following.
I will make my first post here soon.
Had moderator issues, because i'm new. So I had to delete duplicate posts, and all the images had been removed anyway. Ill just upload a few bits, then make it a regular thing if it works this time (I hope).
Some invention work and a sheet with a few bits of Bridgman that I have started to look at.
Early on in my complete Bridgman guide, however I don't find his methods as useful as Rivens so far. Early to tell and it all helps, but certainly he 'drew from life' as the title suggests, unlike Rivens invention method. Thus I end up merging the two, the formulaic invention I have memorised over the past year and what I see when observing Bridgmans drawings.
Oh and its scrap paper from architectural firm I am drawing on at the moment, hence the boxes showing through from reverse in the scan.
I have not been focused solely on drawing these past two weeks and I will keep my writing short in this post here as there is a more detailed writing about my recent work on my personal blog available via the links at the bottom of this post.
I do not know if I should post 3D related work on a Concept Art thread, if anyone has any knowledge otherwise then please let me know. For now I will keep that stuff on my blog and DA, however sculpting has been my focus of late.
Here are some Bridgman balance studies, quite enjoying his book in terms of relaxing observation.
If anyone does want me to post sculpts here also, please let me know and I shall do so. The full post of my recent work is available here;
Some sketches today, reading through & working from observation using Bridgman's chapter on rhythm. Some of my formula work is probably on one of the pages also. More to come this week as always, more ZBrush than drawing probably.. need to keep pressing with that as I really would like a job one day ha.
Sorry there isn't much in this post, slacking a bit possibly. Its my first week back weight training serious again (shattered), since my spine injury. Balancing work, training and art is seriously difficult and I have a lot of respect for people who can attain a high level in multiple endeavours
There are some observations of one of my Frazetta books, but extremely sketchy playing about. So I really don't want to state that in an implicit sense, because their rubbish. Anyway on the opposite pages are some from my imagination and combined self portraits, as I only have myself for custom pose reference photos.
I felt like doing something a little bit more free of the observation or invention formula work I usually do. Meanwhile I have been sculpting a lot. I have a new front formula for the skull which allows for a tighter eye socket to the eyeball, thanks to my friend Ben Wilson. That will be shown on my blog at a later date if i can get it pushed forward more.
More Bridgman studies on Rhythm, and Twisting or Turning. There will be a lot of Bridgman observation work this year as i'm working through a book of over 1000 drawings, and I draw them more than once. I have read/drawn up to page 45 of 350.
I may do some Riven studies today, learn how to invent the muscles of face muscle, that's been a long time over due.
Some of my Bridgman studies on twist, turn, light and shade.
Some of my Bridgman studies on twist, turn, light and shade.
Starting to enjoy the book now, still find i'm thinking in Riven and my own formulas for the anatomy. I like how Bridgman keeps it loose and free at this stage, gets a good energy to the line and pose. I wonder how well I would do without observation. We shall see! Also looking forward to further in the book, where I might see his more refined and anatomically accurate drawings. But I wont skip ahead.
Digital Sketch's; 1st time with no reference at all.
Quick full character sketch, no reference. May look at it again later, but ill do more. Its been about 20mins since I abandoned it, and it is not good at all haha. Oh well I learned a lot, I think the Bridgman is kicking in.
On a random note, as a huge fan of Frazetta (like many of you), I just finished reading Icon. Amazing books, if you have not read it, procure yourself a copy
The face portrait is not for likeness, I wanted to get the expression down, for those interested Kai Greene was the reference though I do not know who took the original promo' photo if anyone knows message me and ill ref' them.
Meanwhile I have been sculpting basic proportionally accurate skulls, and poly-painting my formula's onto them, I want it down concrete in my mind. When it progresses I will show more of that on my blog.
More practice, not really a lot more to say on this, other than I combined my side perspective formula to Bridgmans sketch in his book, made it 8 heads, and then also drew it looser. Need to get an idea of what ill do next week tomorrow after work, feeling a bit slow at the moment.
So I been away on holiday from work, and a bit ill also. Few sketches here and there. I also realize the image size on past couple of digital's were the original size..sorry about that ill make them a more palpable size for sketchbook work in the future.
Hope everyone is good, I shall browse the forums today.
Hey, so here's a post from a few pages from a sketchbook. Have been generating a lot more sculpts recently so if anyone is interested they can check them out over at my blog or where ever is preferred.
Oh and if anyone feels the images i'm posting are to big, let me know what size you think would be better for the thread, and ill re-size them.
All C&C is welcome, but I guess its all just studies except that face I drew.
