I'm doing this research for a module in uni about creating environment concept art for game pre-production/production stages. (not sure myself)
To be fair, I'm a bit lost, because I'm not really sure how to categorise them. So far I have the content (Sci-fi; Fantasy; Realistic), content type? (architecture, natural (outer psace perhaps?)), (daylight, night time), (Hot, cold, wet, dry), budget (low, medium, high) and maybe media (markers, pencil sketches, digital sketches, digital painting)
I'm just confusing myself with this.
Another thing is how polished should the pieces be if they are created for further development by the team - modellers, level designers etc.
Are marker drawings enaugh for an architectural piece and so on...
Any additional info on environment concept art would be extremely helpful : o

Hm.. Maybe I posted in the wrong bit... Sorry people, I'm new here.
This is a huge debate... There are game studios that will take very loose concepts and will hand it over to the 3d modelers to figure out. Some VG companies want real tight and clean drawings to where function is known just by looking at the drawing or painting to where the 3d modeler won't need direction on creating it into 3d.
I personally think any medium is good enough for concept art. The favor though is leaning towards digital since it's simply an easy way to make changes to.
Pick up any Star Wars concept art book and you'll see most of the concept art shown is traditional.
Bottom line... I believe, as a concept artist, you're asked to create unique ideas through functionality (how it moves), design (how it looks) and architecture (how it's built). You have to make it believable to an extent or else people will just say WTF?!
Hope that helps!
OOh thank you very much for your reply. It was helpful!
I'd reply with more information and try have a conversation on this topic, but
my brain is failling at the moment... Writing my report and the deadline's in like a day xD
