loving this sb, very organised great cube studies that color one is spectacular. i guess if anything is there to work and its a big leap, its the understanding of things like reflected light and highlights and yea colour is a very big topic. Anyways great work cant wait to see more. (love the gasman too really geometric)
The basic process is really quite simple: Work out the pattern of light created by each light source (including refllectors) separately, and then superimpose and combine these patterns additively using linear dodge mode. (The shadows will take care of themselves). Apply local colour using a layer in multiply mode.
A couple of points arising from this example: Blue skylight tends to neutralize the yellowish cast of the sunlight around noon, so I wouldn't expect the up planes to be particularly yellowish/orangeish (unless the atmosphere was very smoky). Also, notice that a strong local colour tends to mask the variations in the colour of the lighting.
Edit: Hopefully this goes without saying, but this procedure is only intended to show how to work out what the ball would look like; the style in which you paint it is totally up to you.

nice skin on your paintings, real life in the colours. Just watch your proportions and keep flipping your image to make sure it's alignments are all in order. Good stuff though
I've been concerned with how much "correct" studying I've been doing lately, so I'm going to try and organize myself a bit more and see if that helps cure this worrying feeling I have. Trying to split my 12 hours into thirds - 1.painting studies, 2.referenced drawing/construction studies, 3. imagination. Right now I take too long to do a full painting in that amount of time, so I'll most likely have to split up studies into two or more days so as to keep on track. So the painting is a SIP (study in progress ), which I'll hopefully finish tomorrow night as my painting study for then.

great updates man,- i agree with the shift to more traditional and less academic studies
I think sometimes its easy to forget that drawing is about doing drawing and not learning about drawing.
one thing I would suggest when painting is building up everything at the same rate(edges, values, planes ,colors,areas in the painting)- when you over render one thing
things tend to fall out off balance and you waist a lot off time catching to that particular spot(in this case the helmet).
also this is a better way of working in a production pipeline since at any given point the art director might check in to see where you are
at and its better to have a simple clear statement of your ideas than something that is finished in some places and not in others.
that being said,i really like the rendering of the helmet.

that is awesome to hear that you are practicing that much. Something that I do (which you can try.. or not try!) is have a focus area.. so lets say environments.. For a week i'll spend 6 hours on just those.. thumbnails, studies, etc. The other 6 hours or maybe 4 or 5 if I spend more on the enviros will be something from observation.. Value studies or Color studies! Then after you feel more comfortable with the focus area, switch it to something that you are less comfortable with! You and Gray both made me realize that I should spend more time on constructions and solid lines as that is starting to fall behind I feel. Thanks for that man!
