This is a piece I will be submitting for BCtranslink's "Art on transit" program
I made it by rearranging an older painting so it would fit the dimensions (the black bars won't be there)
Composition and colour are what I'm most concerned about.
Please keep in mind that this will be placed in a bus right where an ad would normally be. on a diagonal where the side and ceiling meet)
Here's the original
I'm not asking for critiques on the older image, but if you have any I would appreciate them.
It wasn't very obvious what the subject matter was (other than that there were bubbles) when I first saw your painting. The background is competing with the mantis and bubbles for attention - what if you toned it down a bit or got rid of some of the extraneous texture?
There are also perspective issues, but I'm guessing you won't have time/don't want to have to repaint it.
This is pretty cool. I like the cropped new version more than the original because you've cooled down the colours and brought the bubbles to life with light and a transparency that wasnt there before.
Seconded about the perpective problems though. Maybe just tweak the edges of things and line up the edges of the tiles so they read correctly? And maybe bring in some darker tones where the wall ends to soften that area. At the moment the junction between the two spaces is too harsh. I think you could also get away with adding more curved areas of light to the surface of the bubbles to show their round shape better.
But in general, it's a cool piece and if I was on a bus, I'd be happy to stare at it for the journey. Good luck with it!
Thank you everybody
rsweard: this is going inside the bus where it won't be flying past commuters. but i will try to simplify
Candra: thank you for the colouring/light adice. It's very specific and will be easy to follow!
I'm glad you would enjoy seeing it on a bus!
Krysjez: it's actually quite easy to repaint, so I will have no problem fixing the perspective
I 'm going to focus on fixing the brick wall---making it darker and less-textured.
