Concept: Dreamcatcher Ifrit
A rare nocturnal beast that feeds on the disturbed emotions and tears of people in nightmares. Its delicate sensor tendrils emit a soothing light and pheromones that aid in moving the sleeper into a deeper, more restful sleep. The Dreamcatcher Ifrit is eyeless and relies on sonar and empathy-based tracking in order to move around. Its irridescent feathers and sleek hide make very little noise, and the Ifrit itself has hollow bones that give it a light weight, rarely disturbing the people it lands on.

An exoskeleton creature living in the underwater, post-vulcanic caverns. Nests in the boulders of magma rocks such as basalt or obsidian. Feeds with minor sea lifeforms, attracted to the luminous parts.

Concept: Beaky the Crow-Walrus
Years in the future after the Waterworld scenario plays out, some birds have evolved back into sea-dwelling denizens. Their sleek, beautiful skin is highly sought after, though adults tend to mar their coats through mating battles. One of them actually eats Kevin Costner, but you don't see that in the movie.
Concept: Vel A'fee of the storms
This is one of the sacred creatures in the kingdom of the elves. It is called Vel A'fee and it is the creature that rules storms, clouds and the mighty thunder. It has the form of a deer, with four eyes, large wings and a long tail that helps for maneuvers while flying. In elvish, the word Vel means "black" and A'fee means "beauty". The reason of such a name is obvious. Vel A'fee, is hermaphrodite and a calf is born once every 1000 years. It is said that he who posses one of this creature's antlers, can tame the thunder and use it at his will. However, no one has ever dared to kill a Vel A'fee.

Oops, forgot about C.O.W until now. *rushed*
Concept: Pantera Toxica
Along with the apocalyptic extinction which finally led to humankind's demise many other creatures perished: about 95% of all fauna and flora disappeared, whilst others mutated and evolved to adapt, efficiently transforming their own deathbed into an environment where they could gorge themselves.
The Pantera Toxica is one of these, along with its slick black fur, essential to survive on the constantly frozen wastelands, it developed an unique gastrointestinal system which enables it to feast on the toxic waste left behind by human constructions, which also lends the pantera it's characteristic green tips, along with huge green eyes, used to seeing through all the snow and ice.
Artist: Ricardo Robles
Concept: Giant Libellula
This creature is born in the darkest swamp sludge, where light can barely go through. At first stages it feeds on lizards, rats and little mammals but in more mature stages it begins hunting goats, cows and even humans if they come near their egg nests. The poisoned sting, long dagger-like, is the Giant Libellulaīs most feared feature.
Artist: Rob Powell
It is thought that sunset and sunrise are some of the world's most beautiful occurances, only during these occurances can the human eyes see a grand creature, known as Umbraxias, the Shadow Serpent. The sight of this creature is very rare indeed and the iridescent colours that glimmers off of it's skin is said to be enchanting. Upon an encounter one can notice almost 'sign language' like gestures made by it's small forearms, legends say that the creature is casting a spell to bring the light or darkness to the world. While some believe it is communicating with the souls of those who have past during the previous day or night.
Concept: Black Pea
Black Pea is a small creature that lives in muddy zones, usually located near seas.
In mating seasons Black Pea males are getting elegant fur on their tales where they also got aromatic seeds used to lure females.
Chiropteran is a winged beast of the night. Said to reside in and around mountain ranges where it can keep a keen eye, or eyes,(six to be exact) on any unsuspecting travelers journeying on the nearby roads. It eats everything of the bodies, but has a habit of taking anything shiny back to it's lair, where it uses them to create a makeshift nest to rest upon. Travelers BEWARE, it is safer to sleep at night rather than journey, because from Dusk till Dawn the Chiropteran will be on the prowl.
Locals are sure this creature stem from a beautiful woman who, in a state of heartbreak, threw herself in the river.
It is known for it's grace, its intelligence and gentle spirit. Lost fishermen can always count on the elwens to bring them home. The name is elvish, meaning starry maiden, as the night sky is reflected brightly in their scales.
Concept: Lowland Hairless Mank
Not truly hairless, the Mank nevertheless likes to cuddle for warmth. Combined with an outgoing personality and insatiable curiosity it makes and excellent pet - though it will demand a considerable investment of time and body armour. Tip: have plenty of guests over to offset the huge food bill!
Concept: Lightpaw Shadowweaver
description: This mammal is only about at tall as a large housecat but it's long limbs, pitch black body, glowing purple eyes, and ability to walk almost unheard have led locals to believe it has mystical powers over shadows and darkness.
((In the end I couldn't resist another catlike creature since Halloween is just around the corner I had the idea to do something somewhat reminiscent of the scared cat pose and it just kinda turned into this))
The Veridian forest his home to many creatures of myth and magic, but the one that captures the attention of any adventurer is Onyxius. Elusive and wary it has only been seen a few times in dozens of centuries. The revered creature is worshiped by the forest folk. It is said that a single feather from the mane of Onyxius grants one eternal life. Many seek Onyxius, those lucky few who have seen it may live still...
The Baryonix roams the forests in search for more curious beings to prey, proud and majestic in her hunt. Many have mistaken it for a non aggressive creature and many have payed. There's even stories of bears falling to it..
Concept: Smokey Dugdig
The Smokey Dugdig or Smoke Dog stands about 1 meter tall. A lithe burrowing creature, the Smokey Dugdig spends most of its time creating vast tunnel warrens. The Dugdig is herbivorous and is extremely docile; despite this it is often mistaken for a chupacabra given its unusual appearance.
Concept: Black Beauty of Calibar
This majestic and sometimes dangerous beauty haunts the barren hills of Calibar, in search of its mate. Its back horns shimmer with the glare of silvery feathers used to draw her future sire ever closer.
Poll is up! Sorry for the delay.
No cuts this week. A couple of people really were toeing the line for what qualifies as black or not, but ultimately I think everything qualified. Palladium's entry was close to rejection purely because I could not see a whole lot of the anatomy, I let it through in the end.
In terms of work this week, some really cool stuff all round. My favorites include Aeronik, albino-z, Sickbrush, scorge and Ricardo Robles (who I voted for). Big ups to Rob Powell for really bringing up his game, and very strong round from everyone overall. I look forward to seeing how this one turns out.

OMG! Great round guys so many awesome entries! Fav's were Ricardo Robles, c-rallis, scorge, Sickbrish, and albino-z. In the end voted for Ricardo Robles. Nice job guys, and now it's time for everyone's favourite, CRITS!!!!! 8D I'm so excited I could just sh*t......did I say that out loud....>.>
amyersco: Very cool concept. I think this would look better if the walls were a bit darker with a slight ilumination from the tail tendrill thingies on the wall and perhaps some moonlighting coming from the window, it would really help both the mood and composition of the image.
dtouched: Reminds me of Phantoon actually. The bioluminescence is pretty need but possibly a bit overdone, maybe if the tentacle tips were a little smaller. The testuring on the creature seems a little odd, but I'm assuming that it's exoskeleton is comprised of volcanic minerals, which would make a little more sense seeing as it has that look to it. A little more lighting to the background could help the creature pop a bit more, it's always a good idea to show most of the silhouette, so the figure of the creature stand out more and reads better.
Wiggen: Humerous brief. The first thing that I notice is not the creature but the very angular Icebergs. You should try to paint over that to make tham look more natural, because it really confilcts with the rest of the image. The rendering on the creature is decent but I feel it can be pushed a bit more to push those forms a bit. The idea is quite unique but I have seen it done similariy before. It was on a television series called 'The future is Wild' were Gannets evolved into wlarus like creatures, the series did have some very interesting creatures though. Not that I'm implying that you copied the idea, but it remined me of it. I uploaded a picture just incase you were curious how they looked...
Sushy: Charming little critter. I think a little more highlights especially on the creature's head would build uo the form just a tad more. Even though a butterfly's wings appear black they still shine under the light and some have a nice iridescence which can really push the beautiful qualities of the image. I like how you added the cat-like legs instead of the rabbit's feet that you had before, makes the creature look more proud. But as I've stated the main issue here is that there isn't enough lighting on the creature, especially from the sunset in the background.
c-rallis: Nice piece man. Loving your work so far, been digging the stuff you've been posting on IOW. The textures on the feathers are very well executed, and very nice rendering overall. The design isn't so original, basically a deer Pegasus, but a nice representation of the brief.
Ricardo Robles: Awesome design dude! Very formidable, not something I'd want to encounter when walking about in a strange swamp alone with no bug spray...Looks very badass, but still looks very beautiful with the iridescent shine on it especially on that eye, I can almost see myself in the reflection. And the wings are awesome, very cool that it has two sets, one on the front, and one at the end pf it's abdomen, not something that you see very often. Nice touch adding the hand underneath, adds an eeries, scary look to the image, but also a great indicater of scale. Overall, one of the best pieces this round and definitely earns my vote. Great job man.
tsabu: Very neat design, The forms seems a little random on the creature's body. Try to unify all the little spheres and whatnot to make the creature's anatmoy read better. Also those soft edges are bugging me a bit.
palladium: Well, the first, and obvious thing to point out is that the image is very dark. I'm not sure if it's just how it appears on your moniter, but there is very little contrast in the piece making it very difficukt for the eye to find a place to rest. Because of the darkness it is quite hard to tell if it is actually black, or just appears that way because of the little lighting on the image. Upon closer inspection you could've added a few more details to the focal areas, but once again it is a little hard to tell because of the darkness. When working on an image the best way to check the composition is the lean back, or zoom out to see how the image looks in thumbnail form, see if you can still make out what is in the picture despite the small size. Remember to push those contrasts so you make those focal areas stand out.
lunipard: Well, the rendring is decent, I get the sense that it's a slippery slimy amphibious creature. It's a little difficult to see that this creature is swimming, because the environment it's in has no distinct watery characterisitcs ither than the fact that it's blue-ish, add some bubbles or something and a little atmospheric depth, something that should appear obvious in underwater illustrations.
albino-z: Why do have to do something like this? Your making me look bad...>.> Exceptional rendering as usual, and a decent design. The wings looks way too busy for me though almost like you were in the middle of putting it all together, but the busyness works compositionally, and keeps the focus to the central head/chest area. I think adding a bit more of a celestial vibe to the piece could really make it stand out even more and help tie into the description you gave.
Aeronik: Great rendering, the white background doesn't really do it justice though, it overpowers the creature very much and doesn't make the details stand out as much as they should. The design could've been pushed a bit further, because I see nothing more than a six-legged black lion.
ZenithDuLunaris: The body doesn't really appear pitch black more than it does a dark grey. The tail seems a bit overdone, I'm not sure if it's meant topush foreward in perspective or if it is just a bit proportionally large. The rendering seems a bit too muddy and needs to be cleaned up a little, try to use large sized brush strokes then smaller brushes to fill in details, you may find the rendering will get a little smoother and forms with build a better. The textured backdrop is a little awkward, I know you were trying for an eerie mood, but it lacks any atmosphere.
Flame_Unquenchable: Interesting looking creature. The background looks very flat especially the way the creature interacts with it, gives me sort of a paper backdrop look, more than an environment. And the textures that are applied on the background also flattens the image because it gives the illusion that everything's on the same plane. The brush work for the grass seems a little too random as if it was quickly applied instead of strategically placed. The pose of the creature looks a bit unnatural, with unconvincing musculature.
Sickbrush: MEOW! Enjoyed watching you paint this on the livestream. Very atmospheric with a great attention to detail. I would've liked to see a bit more attention to the frill/mane of the creature to really flesh out some more details on it and push the prettiness just a tad more. Also I'm not sure if it was intentional but the name Baryonix is that of a dinosaur, so to me it's a little odd to see a panther-like creature with that name. < 3 nose FTW!
J-Sun: The beautiful part seems to be missing here. Also the creature needs to be tied into it's environment a bit more, add some of the lighting from the environment and push the cast shadow a bit more. I think a little more time refining the creature's form could help as well, cuz it looks a little muddy.
scorge: Awesome entry, man. Very cool design and great rendering. Looks a bit too fierce as opposed to being beautiful, though. And it is also getting a bit too close to being a dark blue creature instead of black. The feathers on the horns look a bit out of place as well, they don't look like they're growing there naturally. The fur texture's on the creature's jawline seems too conflict with the form in that area, because looking closely I can see that tuska are alines with the jaw, bit with the fur it looks like it begins from the neclk and curve to the front of jaws.
Si_Swe: Many thanks dude! I do have a question. I noticed Scimthar is in the poll, but I don't see his entry in the thread. This has happened quite a bit actually during past rounds were someone was in the poll, but I'm unable to see their entry. Do know what can be done about this or is it just some kind of glitch on the site?
Damn, that was a strong round and a tough choice! My favorites were those of Ricardo's, Rob's, albino's and Aeronic's. Mine as well
All were excellent. Great renderings and unique styles!
Ricardo's was the most atmospheric and best executed, but the creature reminded me more of a giant mosquito than something of beauty.
Rob's was a classic piece. Very nice rendering although I think that the creature could have lighter tones on some parts in order to pop out.
Albino's was a great piece, but I have to agree with Rob on the wings thing.
Aeronic's was the one I voted for. Cool rendering and correct anatomy. Simple, direct and surely a creature that I would call black beauty. I don't mind the white bg at all. This is a creature challenge after all.
Congratulations to all of you!
Good work guys, i'm surprised of awesome quality in these round works because the topic wasn't easy at all!
Or maybe it was only me who had a lot of troubles with trying to apply light into black skin color, without killing the impression that the color is actually black
As usually i have a headache for with beauty should i vote - give multivote god dammit!
great entries, didnīt vote because i couldnīt decide and thought it was unfair.
my faves are c-rallis, rob powell, ricardo robles (missed the beautiful requirement somehow, at least in the form), aeronik, sickbrush, scorge
I do not like to say anything bad so I will only post positive stuff I have to say
dtouched - I like the creature shape/idea, could be done way better, sure but I still like it. I was considering doing something like that myself for this week
c-rallis - if not albino I would vote on this one, I love background, rendering of the creature and that fur looks like fur, muscle like muscle and feathers like feathers. really good one, only if the concept would not mention bloody elvish spawn (my axe gets itchy already..)
Ricardo Robles - simply great, although I love green it is too green for me. less saturation would help. or more yellow and less saturation.. still concept background and atmosphere are fantastic. I like it very much.
lupinard - I have no idea why but I love it. simple cute and I want it in my fish tank now.
albino-z - I voted here because of the concept mostly. great idea and good presentation of it - probably best picture on the list actually but I love the concept.
Aeronik - this thing is sexy as hell. mhrrraowrk.. can I cuddle a bit with it?
scorge - there is something awesome in parts about it, head, limbs.. it is strange mix because other parts just don't follow. hmm, longer I look at it better it looks and comes together. there is potential in there.
Wow nice round! Lots of quality stuff guys. Makes me miss these challenges..
My faves that i would vote for are
1. Ricardo Robles
3. Albino - Z
And i went with Ricardo! Very cool, original, and strangely beautiful with a sense of danger to it. I like the little touch you added by introducing a hint of a dead person
Some other ones i thought were cool
This is the kind of work we definitely need in this activity to inspire more participants!
keep up the good work
It was very hard to choose one this week, there are so many great entries. Top notch work every one keep it up
