Illustration of the Week #1: Journey's End
Congratulations to Dreoilin for winning Illustration of the Week round 1 and blessing us with this beautiful banner! Woop woop!
And we're on to round three. Another two week period stands before us. Another open topic. Let's do this!
This week I want you to illustrate the end of a journey. What happens?!
Are the good guys defeated? Do they win? Are there any good guys at all? Does your journey have nothing with such things as good or bad guys?
I do not know what kind of journey it has been, but I want you to show it to me. Are they exhausted or relieved?
Have they lost loved ones, forsaken them or been forsaken by them?
Another important question I always ask myself after witnessing an awesome journey, what's next? What happens now?
This weeks requirements are as follows:
- The piece has to depict the end of a journey.
- What kind of journey is up to you. Everything from epic fantasy slaying the dark lord to an old man in his bed is allowed.
- It does not to have to be physical journey. I.e. moving from place A to place B. It can be all in your head.
- The journey does not have to be successful. In other words, the protagonist does not have to win.
Hah, look at the banner, silly.
The deadline is Sunday 4th of September, 23:59 GMT
A mind blowing two weeks. Show me dem ends.

Congrats Dreoilin , the banner looks great.
Wasn't to sure about this one this week, to many choices. But after reading the brief again, just one image came into my head - OZ

Just browsed through the last few topic posts and I'm so happy this is taking off! This next topic sounds mad interesting, can't wait to see what people come up with. Good luck to the participants!
Dana's HUNGRY LIKE A WOLF sketch blog
fumble - looks to be a promising start so far. Cant be sure yet due to lack of main detail, but from your colour scheme i would say gateway to some middle eastern city or even Mediterranean. But i could be wrong, lol
Awesome topic; I love the really open ones.
grenogs - Cool, looks like you're making a lot of headway very quickly. And I think moving the sign above works a lot better in terms of composition. It's more centered but the sign on the top frames the image well and gives it a book cover look. It also feels more like we're entering the Oz area and arriving at the destination rather than coming to yet another goal post along the way.
Fumble - Looks good so far, the theme is well communicated and the scene is immediately readable. Only crit so far is your composition is a little static because it's centered on the rectangular doorway. Maybe do some quick thumbs and test out if there's another perspective or view of the scene that would add a little dynamism to your image.
Misplacedhippos - Nice start; so far it reminds me of that trash lady in the Labyrinth
My idea is to illustrate the bitter-sweet reunion of a knight returning victorious from war to the daughter of his enemy. I'm hoping to illustrate that mostly through contrasting design, maybe making her attire and home a bit spanish or mediterranean and his more english or french.
Just a quick thumb so far; I'd like to set it up as a horizontal composition for a wrap-around cover

Wow I'm honored and thrilled to have my banner up there- thanks!!
Awesome topic this round- I'm glad it's two weeks (no time for me to work on it this week, but maybe I can find time next week)
grenogs: Great start! I'm really looking forward to seeing this one- I also like the change you made with the sign
Fumble: cool colors so far!
Misplacedhippos: I like the look of this one! Maybe you could bring some of the purple from the figure into the background a little? If the woods she was coming from were kind of cold and dark looking the other side of the picture could be warm and bright and really give the feeling of a homecoming.
dierat: love your idea! I can't wait to see you develop it!
jagder: ooh I love the very cool moody atmosphere to this one
grenogs: I like number two a lot, nice framing with the sign
fumble: looks nice so far, are there cheering people on the wall? I really can imagine a lot of bright colours there.
Misplacedhippos: I'm curious how that might turn out
dierat: nice concept, looking forward to seeing more.
jagder: great work on textures and edges, looking so realistic already! I also like the concept a lot.
Well, finally decided to join the fun Didn't feel like a happy ending today. And I definetly watched too much Lord of the Rings recently D:
Might change some more anatomy tomorrow when I got a fresh view on this...

As a parent, this is the first thing I thought of. Every long trip ends with me carrying my sleeping son from the car.
A quick update for my second image after recommendations from you guys, thank you very much, as any help and comments are always appreciated.
The smaller sign will most likely disappear, and the large welcome sign i'll probably change to a different shape and size.
misplacedhippos: promising start, interested to where your going to take this. Maybe add some plants, flowers in the bottom right foreground just to frame the image a little, it will also give a scence of depth to the image.
dierat: thanks for your help, much appreciated. Cant comment much on this yet, nice concept, looking forward to see this finished.
jagder: love the emptiness on this, reminds me of the first few minutes of silent hill,
avisnocturna: love the image and colouring, should be a really nice piece. Also quite curious to how your going to develope this, especially the hair.
jeremy colwell: Quite like this, especially if your going to keep it b&w, if so, maybe some rain for added atmosphere? Only one crit, maybe add some extra canvas to the top, at the moment its looking a little over cropped.
sean mcclain: love the light and colours on this, just a thought, i'm guessing there's a whole horde of dragons following from behind, if so, then a subtle way to illustrate it would to be to add more dragon shadows onto the clouds.
Jeremy: That's really a sweet idea!
grenogs: I'd agree about your thoughts about the signs, also curious what you'll do with the light
Sean: I really like that one! Nice concept, colors and composition.
So... Cleaned up the mess and started to figure out the light and materials. Also this time I'm trying to work on seperate layers for everything and keep all the stuff nice and clean, as I made good experiences with that method in another b/w picture last time
Now there's just a looooot of work with the rendering left Might make his face look a little less old maybe...
And a little update before I go to bed Renderdideldoo

Avis that is looking great, really captured a mood. I'm also extremely jealous/impressed with the clouds and sky! beautiful!
Hopefully I can make a start on this when I get back from my parents, seems like it could be a fun topic!
Really great pictures, guys! You're all so talented!
Sean McClain - Really interesting moment to capture, and the composition's really nice. I'm just not sure if you mean for the dragon riders to be friends or foe - are they arriving home or attacking? You might want to try to make that a little more clear.
Avis - Looks awesome so far. For some tiny nitpicks, the birds and the red flags/arrows are kinda distracting me at the moment. I would suggest skipping the larger birds and going for the subtler specks of the smaller ones and I would go for a less saturated and more mournful color for the flags, maybe a silver or dark purple for example.
tobbA - Very cool first sketch; can't wait to see where you take it from here. For a small suggestion, I think the window's edge is a little awkward being so close to the edge of the composition and all, it might work better if you enlarged it and allowed it to continue off-screen.
This is a great topic! So open for illustration!
Congratulations to Dreoilin for the banner, it really sets a high benchmark for quality work!
That said, here is my concept, just a (really) rough sketch.
I always watch in awe at those big passing shots of cruisers and colonial ships in sci fi movies, Aliens, Event Horizon, Starwars to name a few. Not sure its terribly original but my idea is for the arrival of a interplanetary ship reaching one of the gas giants, Jupiter or Neptune after months of travel from Earth. I would like to make the ship look old and full of character, scarred from the journey and the harsh environment of space. Will experiment with scale too, could end up an unmanned probe like Nasa's Juno or a massive mining ship like deadspace's USG Ishimura.
Avis, that's coming along great. Like the rendering.
Grenog, can't wait to see this one shape up.
Jagder, excellent mood.
Lots of nice work so far from everyone!
Here's my update. Changed the composition, tightened up rendering, lighting, yadda, yadda, yadda.
AvisNocturna: I love this piece so much... I can't wait to see it finished!!
Sean McClain: really cool scene!
Jeremy Colwell: this is a really unique idea- the thing I love about these open topics is that we get to see such a wide range of stuff- from fantasy to a really simple but beautiful moment of a parent carrying their child
tobbA: looking forward to seeing more of this
Dayle: thanks! I love your sketch- good to see some sci-fi
Gadbur: lol I wish my quick sketches looked that good!
Well here's a suuuuuper rough sketchy... haven't really had enough time to work on it so far. If you can tell what's going on in it- you're awesome!
edited to add: yaaay kitten poker you're awesome!! Here's a small update... continuing to mess with the rough sketch

this is what I have so far..... hopefully I will get more than 2 days to play with this one ^_^
nice stuff here. here is my wip
couple of wips
nice going everyone! I was really inspired to do this one, only just found out about IOW ...
... really nice theme although it's quite hard to illustrate the end of a journey without also making it the beginning of one! anyway, I wanted to go with something a bit poetic, here are my WIPs
