I must admit That I'm going through the walt stanchfeild lectures at the moment and capturing the gesture and getting weight distribution right and all the other little nuances that sell the pose or the action is starting to drive me insane (well not drive I'm close enough to walk there!!), Its really hard until you get your head in the game. I guess its another one of those things that comes with time and loads of practice, I did put one up on my SB to see if anyone got the pose and all I got back was advice on the anatomy LOL, I thought that was really funny.
Oh well keep at it my mate, and all the best.
Nice sketchbook, you seem to be sometimes stubborn to accept some people advices but in overall you seem to progress (hope you don't mind me saying that!) We seemed to have similar start - I guess as many people does - beginning from some cartoonish style and being stuck in it.. good that you found a will to break out! Good luck
I love the drawing of the glasses in post #57, the shading is excellent.. Keep going
Hi everyone. I took some time off to focus on school and get ahead on my work. I'm now in a comfortable place to re-balance my life and make more time for drawing. That being said, I feel REALLY guilty for taking off so much time. I promise more regular updates again, at least until school work crunches down in a few weeks.
From the Spartan Camp: You'll notice that I had to do lots of retraining to get up to my old lack of skill from before my break.
Good to hear you'll be updating regularly Nice studies! I like the skull studies; nothing looks wildy out of proportion. Keep going!
Good to see you still working hard.
You know you don't have to upload the pictures twice. Open both threads up in different tabs, click on a picture to get it's url and post it via the insert image (the yellow square). Saves a lot of time if you've got a lot to show in a couple of places.
Nice gesture drawings my mate, you captured some of them really well, congrats, I know its not an easy thing to do.
all the best matey.
Wow. I feel like shit about my bad upkeep on this thread. On the plus side, I've been following a daily regimen for the past week, so I can at least confidently say that I'm back to drawing daily. On the down side, I can only work for about an hour every day, as that's all the time I have available. I miss summer. =[
Anyway, here are my latest projects. Some arms. Planning on doing more over the few days. Then, I'm thinking I'm just going to do a study freeze and focus entirely on arms for a while instead of going to the end of the chapter in my book and not doing any further practice. I need to start getting more confident in producing from imagination, and to do that I need to just start drawing a lot from life! Maybe I'll do that "Draw 100 times" thing that somebody here follows.
Busy busy busy!
Hmm. Neglecting doing stuff from life lately. Small update tonight.
Hope your'e well, come on mate give us some more, we need updates!!
Oh and by the way because christmas always gets so hectic and crazy in my house as christmas gets nearer and nearer, that and I will forget I'll do this now!
"Merry Christmas mate and a happy new year to you and all your family".
all the best mate
You've improved a lot since you slowed down. Now get back here and update.
Happy new year matey!!
I hope you are well rested and fed, because I need updates MAN I'm getting the shakes and everything!! (LOL I'm such an idiot sometimes)
Update soon please I'm starting to worry that you have run away to join a circus or something!
all the best matey
Hey Strato, you've improved! Dunno why, but in my head you're like a friendly rival on the boards, our similar ages and situations I suppose. I hear you about school busting in on art time... ugh.
I dig your muscle-bound sad guy a few posts up. His head looks a little big to me, but I'm out of practice and don't have much practical advice. Just wanted to pop in and see how you've been drawing these past few months!
We are cups, constantly and quietly being filled. The trick is, knowing how to tip ourselves over and let the beautiful stuff out.

You are doing great, lots of studies and really trying to pin down the fundamentals. Keep at it as you are probably about to reach a point where you might see a large improvement quickly.
A couple of things, first your gestures as mentioned still dont have much in the way of line economy. A good exercise is this the main focus is to NOT TAKE YOUR PENCIL OFF THE PAGE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJ9GpdjkxqY. It really helped me out.
Also you are using a lot of ovals that seem to be 2d and placed in 2d space for your gestures. You really wanting to be thinking in 3D with spheres and cubes flowing into each other. There is a lot of emphasis on speed but feel free to slow down as you figure out how best to simplify the figure. Check here out to see what I mean of how simple 3d objects can be indicated with gesture http://figuredrawing.info/gesture.php
Also the anatomy studies are great but make sure you are applying them. Like you have done a few skull studies, then try tracing a skull on photos and do some from photoref and from imagination.
Hope this is helpful info from a noob!
Er dude !!
where are you? I misss your knd words and banter, an update or two wouldnt go amiss either if you can find the time.
all the very best to you mate whatever you are doing.
Cool sketchbook! I'd really like to see some full figure drawings rather than just gestures For the gestures though, I'd suggest looking into vilppu. If you can get your hands on the vilppu videos, watch the one on gestures. Really great stuff. He really shows how to get the flow of action in a beautiful way. Keep it up
