Illustration of the Week #1: The Banner
You have been waiting, deep within your artsy caves and you finally see the light.
The angels sings song of joy and happiness.
Children grab their mothers skirt and point.
It's here, the Illustration of the Week challenge is finally afoot!
The first topic is to create a banner for the weekly. Mundane, yes I know. But this is your chance! You can finally do what you've always wanted!
You will be the best banner creator ever, I just know it.
There's no theme requirement for this challenge.
Your illustration can look however you want it. All it has to do is include the text "Illustration of the Week" and the rules (listed below).
The focus of the banner is the rules, and looking fancy.
But mostly the rules, so make sure you don't use a font so fancy that the reader has to squint.
And remember the size, about 1000ishx600ish pixels should do.
Here's the banners of the other weeklies:
Creature of the Week
Character of the Week
Think you can match that? Sure you can, you're going to beat it!
Here's the rules you have to list in your entry:
- The entry has to be a full-fledged Illustration. Not simple concepts or designs.
- No rushed entries, WIPs or sketches.
- At least 2 WIPs must be shown.
- Finished piece and WIPs must be posted in the finals thread before the deadline.
- Colour or black and white, both are allowed.
- Both traditional and digital mediums are allowed.
- A border containing entrants username, the topic and challenge number must be added.
- Image size cannot be too big, nor too small.
The deadline is Sunday 14th of August, 23:59 GMT
That means you have about two weeks to create the greatest banner the world has ever seen. Get to it!

I actually have a pretty neat idea already, if time permits (or if COW and/or CHOW don't come up with topics that are too epic) I'll wip something up!
First WIP in this forum? Sweet!
This was inspired by a number of ideas, one of them being the badge for IOW, except I used a box instead of a book.
In a last-ditch effort, a witch and her baby boy must flee her world using a sacred family heirloom as she's being hunted by the king's men for the use of witchcraft. Her husband, a knight in the royal army, must stay behind and close the box to ensure no one may follow her. The box's counterpart opens in modern-day New York, in the apartment of an everyday lawyer.
I'm thinking I'll replace the furniture on the left with the rules.
@tempest-haze very intressting idea, i am eager to see how it goes
sketches, trying to figure out what to go with
Secondly, three-dimensional illustration is a perfectly valid form:

Crash Course for Artists, Illustrators, and Cartoonists, NYC, the 2013 Edition!
"Work is more fun than fun."
"Art is supposed to punch you in the brain, and it's supposed to stay punched."
Yes, the moderators discussed the 3D-issue and we decided to leave it open for the moment. If thinks get out of hand, we'll probably incorporate it. But for the moment, it is allowed.
Thank you for the feedback, though!
Did this just now on the train ride home after my night shift, Cant wait to start this from scratch in photoshop do an ala Joe Kubert stylized modern illustration of this. (many perspective faults)
I love how these activities make me research and do studies on things I would never even think of otherwise it really lets me explore my existence and Im grateful to be able to create.
Exciting! Might have a go at it, even if I fail super hard!
thinking of going the 'artist/warrior' route; apron-like breastplate, giant brush sword or micron pen arm cannon, chilling next to/leaning against the rules.
Or if not that idea, maybe the top half of a guy's head, whose skull is open like a book, emitting light, design elements, critteres, and the rules.
will post a wip as soon as EoW Shanghai 2112 is done.
why the hell is it banned anyways ? I mean 3D and photography - ITS ART GODDAMMIT! ..and if someone wants to work with a 3D program or with his camera and do collage-stuff or even if they want to work with wood make a sculpture and incorporate it into an illustration - why would we like to forbid this ? In the end they would still have to work digitally, to incorporate it into a final design, so actually its more work and way more complicated and yet some would like to ban it? This doesnt make any sense to me. Its banned in all other categories (which is stupid in my opinion!) leave at least room for it in this one ...I mean I personally dont work with 3D programs and cameras ATM and in the nearer future, but I think we should allow everything.
I cant even explain how confused I am right now, that in an art community, its talked about to ban certain approaches, or that it could " get out of hand " ... HOW could this get out of hand ?ITS ART IT IS SUPPOSED TO GET OUT OF HAND ! ...every approach should be treated equally.
My two cents.

Isn`t 3d already allowed in Chow?
From the Big guide to Chow :
Any medium is accepted, except photography.
What this means: You can submit work that is created digitally, or traditionally. However, photography is not accepted.
Why: CHOW is about illustration, be it on a computer or canvas. Photography is not illustration therefore not accepted.
However, sculpture is accepted because it is done by hand.

I am all for 3D submissions and photography. Aksel (Nyctalgia) was very hesitant on the photography and eventually I think we decided on it being photographs weren't allowed unless it also has some painting with it (eg matte painting). However, rereading the initial post, it doesn't appear to mention anything about banning photography. So feel free to use photographs or 3D in your entries guys.

I did a wip post and it never got approved. Whats up with that?
SeanMcHaney, that seems to be a problem that has appeared lately, do as Parasakoira says and try again. If it does not show up, you can PM the WIPs to me and I will post them for you.
snatti: Thanks! And nice sketches -- I like #3 best
AdrianNagorski: Interesting idea, but if I were you, I'd try not to get bogged down on details when you start it in Photoshop. Focus more on getting the perspective right this early in the game.
SeanMcHaney: I like the angle you chose to draw this from, but the anatomy of (his) right hand and arm is looking a bit wonky, almost like his bones are broken.
grenogs: I'm liking the book cover concept Curious to see where it goes. I'd check your anatomy, though. His torso is looking a bit short.
