Got inspired by Tibetan nomads So also cold-ish wasteland here. I'm kind of going the realistic more subtle 'band of survivors' route who need to scavenge for food, water, parts etc. Not necessarily brute mutant plunderers.
Don't know if I'll do a final piece, but I need to do more of these character sketches. Here some ideas. Kind of like the lizard man the best... Comments?
my homepage: http://www.trickstertoys.com
and here I thought I would be the only one to include a dog
as good this topic is it's been done to death, going to be a lot of repeating ideas, I might vote based solely on originality
without clothes or accessories (obviously)
"You might be disappointed if you fail, but you will be doomed if you don't try"
I didn't want to strike for originality, since it's my first CHOW and my first attempt to do a complete character on photoshop. Here's a sketch for my casual concept.
I might change the dog..
Some small progress.
@Rinibee: is a mask or something covering the mouth a must for non-mutated human characters?
@Varguy It's not a must, it's just a suggestion of a way to show how the character might try and protect themselves. Basically all I'm really trying to get across is that if people are doing a human character, to think about their environment and not just to come up with a generic, post-apoc design.
Hmm, I have to rethink all my stuff, guess it's kinda generic... :/
Now crit the shit out of me!
I'll throw in my sketches so far. I did some noodling in pencil first. I never do post-apocalyptic stuff, so I needed to get my feet wet. It got me thinking about materials a lot, like what sort of stuff people would scavenge and use. Then I ran a few silly ideas in Photoshop silhouettes: traffic cone dude, toilet seat headdress, and finally ended up with car-parts samurai.
So that's what I'm rolling with, a dude who pulled parts from abandoned cars to make himself a badass suit of rubber-and-metal armor, scavenged from old tires and license plates.
I've probably bitten off more than I can chew, so any advice or suggestions are welcome!
^that's an interesting something
I made a better sketch I hope you all can see it clearly this time. He is a human, hardened by the battles he has had by the mutated and the deformed. He is searching for his lost love in the wastelands of Earth.
don't know one resembles too much of a ninja the other one to much of a human
Initial sketch, going down the slightly mutated route. Skin has adapted and thickened to cope with the harsh environment, resembling scales. Also the nose no longer works and the character has to rely on special gills which have evolved to breathe the harsh air.
Hey everyone, going for another round. Looks like dogs are a thing to have in a post apocalypse world. hah
I like what I see!
Heres mine, crits welcome.
WIP need to reposition the guy at the front a bit :X. I was thinking maybe a guy with blown off limbs so that he has to use wires and scrap technology to rebuild some of himself.....
I ate the dog to survive, but I'm not sure if I'm going to survive the shading part..
wwwWWHHAAAA this round is BAD@$$$!!! GREAT WERKS EVERYBODY!!!!
i threw some more at it i really want to get better at the design an development of character stage it looks like junk but i like drawing like this more than the way i did in the last chow XDXDXD i think im gunna try an make this a game when im dun an call it WASTED XD
I'm curious as to whether you consciously intended to play with the idea that the packaging (a facade of value) of what was likely to cause the nuclear war (a struggle to gain dominance/power/wealth) is the same thing that's helping keep him alive after its collapse. An ironic and witty pun.
NickyBeats: Hey! Cool to see you here! The pic is looking awesome: really solid & atmospheric. If I had to say something, I'd say maybe he could use some kind of "hook" that will punch up his uniqueness.
Closed: Love those characters, and I really dig the loose style. There's a lot going on there in the implied details. #1 is a great spin on a classic and hits the mark dead on, but #3 & #4 are really fantastic in their bizarre weirdness.
JoshBuzzee: I love where that's going. Can't wait to see more.
Malepart: Cool design with a great sense of humor. Watch the anatomy on them arms.
Deadlyhazard: Creepy. Great start.
Vertebra: Excellent. It looks totally solid and has a great mood. And that dog is effing scary.
RWhyte: The foreshortened leg reads a little flat and her shoulder is too low. Also, I think her clothes look a little tailored for a wasteland environment. But it's a promising start. Keep pushing it and make sure we can really read the mutations.
FallenAngel: I really like the colors and some of the light you got going on, but the pose is very stiff.
Kamikazuh: I think it's a good clean start, but yeah, you could push the design a bit more.
ThatGuy: That's a tough pose. The upper torso doesn't connect to the hips properly: we can see both halves of the butt, and both halves of the abdomen, which isn't possible. If you can turn his abdomen and his butt more toward the back, it'd make more sense. If you draw in his abs & pecs, you'll see what I mean.
Capt Surge: He definitely needs to be pushed more, design-wise. Right now he could belong to any of several different genres. Embrace the wasteland!
mes: Looking good! I love the iron as a weapon.
Mr. Gadbury: I hope you don't get tired of me saying holy shit that's awesome, 'cause I'm gonna say it again. Holy shit that's awesome. The lighting is so believable, and you reveal just enough to make it really damn scary.
Varguy: Looks great so far!
Ismo: It's great. You gave him a lot of personality. Despite his hideous mutations, he looks like a guy you might want to hang out with.
Dragon4Lunch: Yeah, I really like the lizman the best. But the idea of a guy who selects just the right golf club to beat down his post-apocalyptic foes is pretty awesome.
Pixeltuner: I really like where that's going. It seems like it'll be a really believable take on the genre.
Verehin: Excellent. I want to see more of it!
Sorry to those I missed! The hour's getting late.
Oh, and here's my thing so far. I changed it from sword to spear because he looked like he was holding the sword and saying "What's this?" But now with the spear he looks like he's surprised that he's holding it. Goddam gas masks. I want to draw big googly eyes on it.
Need to get back on the horse, been awhile. First iteration/pencil puke, see if it sticks. Looking good everyone!
