If I'm gonna get into the habit of doing more still lives, I'm going to have to either find another spot to set up, or get some cloth to pin up or something. Otherwise, everything's going to be in this one corner, with the yellow wall reflecting all over everything.
I've been trying to figure out how to bridge the gap from doing random photo studies into actually making up enviro-type stuff. Great advice off Ctrl-Paint here and here - making tiny studies, and using colours/structure from ref to make up a composition. Little thumbnails! Here's my first attempt!
Love your style, but what I noticed (and please excuse me for noticing, since i am no expert whatsoever), is that you often have very dark (colourwise) works. But in the first few pages I saw more bright works. I personally love lighter works, hope we can expect one soon cause i really dig your artworks!
You’ve got some neat 90 sec gestures there! I wish I could get mine that good! I like the rendering of the light-bulb and I would LOVE to see more from Blade Runner!
Fuggedaboudit - Thanks a lot! Hm, I'll watch for that. I was going to say I mostly blame my monitor, but if the earlier ones aren't, I guess it's my colour choices/subject matter choices. I'll keep an eye out for that.

Okay, so I've been bad about posting. Uh.
Here's another one of those enviro exercises, but it is late and for once I am too tired to dig out the ref link.
Gestures, way more scribbly than usual. I've been working for so long on simple, confident lines, that I think my figures were getting kind of blocky and stiff. Trying to breathe some life back into them. Not sure if it's working, or just looking like messier versions of what I normally do.
HEy, I LOVE those last few gestures. So clean, and very fluid, you could basically animate them. Nice stuff. And I know they're just "gestures"- but I find some beauty in gestures that maybe some people don't. I believe they should represent from one perspective: the evolution of an artwork: and from another perspective- they should have their very own merit. Enough structure and flow to keep them standing independently from "trying to do a finished work".

poetry man - Thanks a ton, that's really appreciated! I have kind of the same view on gestures, I love seeing well-done gesture drawing, and one of my major art school regrets is that I never learned to life draw like the Animation kids. Gesture drawing is a good basis for other skills, but it's really rewarding to just work on them on their own merit as well.

Head study. I've done so many studies from mjranum stock photos that I think I've painted this model... twice before? She's kind of great. And, not gonna lie, I'll never get sick of painting her hair.
I love your gesture work as well. Have you ever looked at Glenn Vilppu? If so, then I'm sorry for being redundant, but if not I think you'd REALLY enjoy his take on gesture drawing and developing forms/figures. The biggest things I've been trying to work on with regards to good draftsmanship are confident strokes, economy of line, and perspective, with a huge emphasis on the last one. Construction needs to be in every drawing, even in the gestures that we lay down so quickly and loosely. It'll have a fast, loose look to it, but in order to make it "stand independently", as poetry man so well put, the whole picture plane needs to be taken into account to give it good foundation. (these are, of course, just my observations and amateur opinions ). Keep up all the great work.

Drawing Script / Athletics / 90s. These are kind of bad. Cut up my finger in a stupid way and couldn't draw very well for a couple of days while it was bandaged, now I've got normal bandaids and can draw properly again, and still this is the best I can do. Welp.
Wow, I have apparently forgotten what "daily" means. And I did so well for most of the year! Not gonna bother to explain what made me drop off the earth for a few days, but I am still alive and still drawing. (TL;DR drawing is hard, slump, couldn't bring myself to post stuff I hated.)
To celebrate my return, here's a kind of iffy still life.

So clearly when I said I was gonna start posting daily again that... did not happen. But now it will! I was doing NaNoWriMo through November, and it turns out I only have room in my brain for one ironclad daily habit. That's done, back to this!
What I'm working on at the moment - an entry for the Art Dept contest on DeviantArt. Gonna be down to the wire on the deadline, oops.
Wow, it looks SUPER yellow, I have got to pay more attention to colour profiles. =\
Aaaand final. (At least final as far as the contest is concerned; I might sit on this for a few days before posting it elsewhere.) A little sad how much this looks like yesterday's iteration, considering I worked on this all day, but the final stages are always like that, I guess.
Here's my pro tip: if you ever feel like doing a picture with 5 lightsources, it's a BAD LIFE CHOICE.
AHHH, those birds are too bright! I love the detail of the scabbard. I'm definitely seeing the good in this piece the more I look at it. But the birds are just too bright. Still I see major progress. Keep it up. gogogogo

really do love your gestures, they always feels so clean, are you always doing 90s? maybe try doing 30s to loosen up more and capture the gesture with lesser lines

rumpenstiltzkin - Thanks! I used to do a lot of 30s, then felt like I was doing them mostly because it was the quickest way to fill a page and I was getting lazy on the longer ones. Then I somehow fell in the other direction and stopped doing them entirely? I WILL HAVE TO START AGAIN, thanks for the reminder. =)
Normally I decide to do a study and then go looking for stock; this was the other way around, love this picture. Trying to get back to basics, to emphasize planes... I'm still not that happy with my style. One brush only on this one, and none of my normal mixer brush blending shenanigans.
