Here's a first attempt at self-portraiture, in monochrome. Made extra hard by the fact that I was looking at my reflection in the shiny surface of my turned-off laptop screen. A real mirror would have been a better idea.
Yes, there is an obvious anatomy issue with the eyes, I just got tired of looking at this after trying to fix it many times, and decided to give up on it. Next time I draw a face I will set it up better in the early stages so stuff like that doesn't happen again!
Here's a color study I started working on today (with ref at top). Needs details and tweaking. I'd love any comments or criticism!
Lightpunk, thanks for the encouragement!!
Here's a sci-fi speedpaint, no reference. 1.5 hours in photoshop. I really want to get faster/better! More studies now...
Nialain, thanks for stopping by! Yeah, it's really fun to make things for people. And thanks, I hope the studies will pay off
Here's a sketch from life from earlier today. The right hand (resting on stomach) didn't quite work...re-did it too many times and it was better the first time! lol. Sketching from life is rewarding though.
Another color study+ reference. Fun stuff!
Some gestures from earlier.
Thanks for the comment Lain!
Working on some environment thumbs today (from imagination). Third one is still in progress...
Another little thumb...
Hm, drawing grass/greenery is hard. Guess I have a new subject to study.
Critique is very welcome!
You're already showing some definite progress in your later sketches, which means you're heading up in the right direction!
On the other hand, I feel that your environments are lacking. I would advise you to do some real life studies of environments. I kinda see the same mistakes I have on my own work: they're kinda dull and empty, the composition is not the best one, amongst other things. Understanding color theory, aerial perspective, regular perspective, narrative and composition will help you to achieve more believable and rich environments.
Look up Albert Bierstadt for some very good old master approach to environment painting and light control. I'm learning tons just by looking at his stuff.
(and now to follow on my own critique )
A few really awesome russian landsacpe painters to check out would be. Do some studies. I find their work beautiful.
I small crit I have for the last thumb woiuld be to make the wooden pole on the left smaller in realationship to the silouettes of the people. I don't feel the pole is sitting in the space correctly because of the size.
Thanks a lot for the the feedback and advice, Helio and NiaLain! I'll definitely try and get some landscape studies in sometime.
I've been slightly MIA the past few days due to lots of work going into my current concepting job, which I'm not at liberty to post.
But I managed to squeeze this girl in today. No reference. Feedback on the anatomy/balance of the figure before I go any further would be awesome!

face from ref...also a more shaded version which I don't like...
Another face from ref...
I'm liking your portraits - it's something that I need to get on doing, just to get different references and just draw .
Keep up the good work - I do love the spiked buildings
Steveland and NiaLain thanks for stopping by, and for the comments!
Still working on face stuff/features. From imagination now. Still a long way to go.
Practicing skin. No reference. criticism is welcome!
