<-- as the title says, im trying to paste into a selection or mask and im sure im missing something here with floating layers or something but I just cant figure it out. A nudge in the right direction would be much appreciated if anyone can help?
Painter 11 btw
I'm not sure you can do it in painter, I never managed to :\
on the fourth day of glitchmas my painter™ gave to me
four random crashes, three broken brushes, two system hangups & one corrupted workspace
This is much easier to do in gimp and photoshop.
Here is a way I figured out that you'll probably not want to bother with. Its based on a post I read about saving and moving layer masks around.
You need a copy of your selection or mask. I was usually using a saved selection. It should be in channels. If you had a more complex mask you made by hand you should make a copy of it with duplicate channel from right clicking or from the channel menu.
Paste whatever you want and move it where you want in another layer. You won't be able to see the mask you are working with but could make the layer transparent for a while. Then give the pasted layer a layer mask. Go to the channel window and select the duplicate channel you made before and duplicate it over the new layer mask. You can then apply the layer mask and it'll look correct.
I used this when I was working with watercolor and liquid ink layers that offset layer masks strangely for no apparent reason. I converted them to a regular layer then copied the layer mask back on them.
Using gimp or photoshop to "paste into" is much easier. Its what I'd do if I were you.
Many thanks for that info coreyh2, It is a bit of a huge workaround isnt it lol, as you said, much easier to do in Photoshop etc
