Hello all and thanks for viewing my thread! I feel like my art is approaching a low-end professional level, and I'm dipping my toe into the turbid waters of freelancing. If anyone is interested, my deviantArt site is here: http://guardian-beast.deviantart.com/
I'm just a weirdo with a BS in Natural Science (with a focus on Computer Science, and a teaching major in Biology, with minors in Math, and Chemistry). I've always been an avid doodler, and largely self-taught, but I also earning an Associates in Animation (with a focus on Sequential Art).
In the pursuit of refining my skills and boosting my speed and quality, I've decided to start a sketch journal, which I intend to update on a regular (hopefully daily basis).
As a point of reference, this is my current level:
My sketch from 4/28 -- I'm obsessed with the Ultraman franchise. My housemates and I are running a tokusatsu (Japanese practical sfx shows including Godzilla, Kamen Rider, and Super Sentai) themed roleplaying game. I'm working on designing a dark energy themed Ultraman, which I was playing with in this 3 hour-ish sketch. He is meant to look rather evil, a perversion of the classic design, which is a direct contradiction of his kind heart and steadfast guardian-of-the-meek ethic.
4/29 -- I have a distinct dearth of finished pictures including human characters and modern/sf backgrounds, which is silly, as the majority of my original story ideas (which I hope to turn into webcomics or illustrated novels) involve (mostly) human protagonists in a modern/sf/fantasy mixed setting.
detail of the face:
I'm going for a mix between stylized and realistic, as I find stylization can be a boon to getting specific character themes across efficiently, particularly with the use of unique eye shapes and iris to sclera proportions. I also like to draw pretty people and favor androgyny, since it seems western artistic favor extreme gender categorization nowadays, phooey.
So, my sketch for today, the start of a revamping for Ridley from Metroid, as part of this weeks Creature Of the Week challenge.
Loving the first painting, maybe desaturate the colors a bit because they look very "childish".
And the last update is really awesome, I hope to see more of it!
Keep it going!
See my latest Sketchbook work!
