@Aragah: I am full time physics major, so it hampers the time to draw, albeit because of this I am trying to draw within the gaps of time that I use can draw. And so I am drawing more consistently than ever (about 3 hours of Grand Central Academy night class and 4 hours of painting between classes depending on the days), so I have become more resourceful with my time, and draw whenever I can. There is a 3 hour wait before one of my next class, so I use this 3 hours to go to Central Park to do watercolor studies.
I am attending Hunter College, it is a few blocks from Central Park, the largest park in NYC. My college is several subway stops from my home, so I don't have the time to go home and come back to school, which benefits my drawing and painting, since I am forced with 3 hours of nothing to do, so then I have decided to do plein air paintings between classes.
I will take a photo of the place I am doing watercolor studies from in my future update.
@iven:I have never used photoshop fully in my life. I don't have the program. The only time I have opened photoshop was at school to draw with a mouse, which didn't last long.
Yes I sketch on the trains between commutes. I commute to school, then commute back to sketch more on the train. If I have time, I edit my drawings that I am doing for my Grand Central Academy class at home before that class starts, or draw things from imagination. Then I commute to Grand Central Academy to take my night class, which on the way I will again sketch on the train. I have filled up three pocket sketchbooks so far, filled with faces and gestures, and inspiration notes for my novels-in-progress. Right now, I am half way through my 4th pocket sketch book.
Depending on how lucky I am, each sketch gets to be from 10-20 seconds, because people move a lot and the train rides are really bumpy. I also have to hide my sketchbook drawings when I change pages, incase I might get into trouble.
152. O. Cast Drawing, Eye of David. Block in process done, just starting to flatten out the shadows starting from the eyebrow. The sketch below the top drawing is done of another person's eye of David cast by mistake(somebody had taken someone else's eye of David and put it where I was drawing), so I got a new one and redrew it on the top. This class just started on Monday, and it is 5 days a week. I also still have a month left of Saturday figure drawing at GCA. 1/31/2012
153. I/O. Compilation of 3.5x5.5 notepad sketchbooks in random order. Each notepad has 100 sheets, and so far I have completed 3 of them, and halfway through the 4th one. They fell apart, so I there is a fifth detached notepad. Gestures are pretty hard to do on the train, because people kept moving and the train kept swaying and bumping, so each of the drawings are done within 10-20 seconds, that is except for the car and motorcycle in the picture. After the people moved, I sometimes improvise or try to remember what they looked like and draw it.
Stay tuned for some of the thumbnail sketches I did for planning bigger drawings from imagination.
It is until time has been taken away from one's life, then one may begin to realize how little time one has left! When one thinks in terms of seasons and not years, one begins to realize there are only so many summers in one's life for plein air(in NYC at least).

I was hospitalized for a day due to collapsed lung.
160. O. Eye of David update. The reflective light is downplayed a lot, but if you look close enough, you can still see the refective light. It is easier to spot on thte real drawing. 2/10/2012

162. O. Since the female model wasn't here, we did sketches of a new model and some long poses. This is done in charcoal on newsprint. I find skinny muscular guys very hard to draw; too many bumps. Most of the time during my nude figure drawing classes, the models are often female. 2/4/2012

but. thats a thing. about using your time well. you said you are able to draw a lot. that one thing im scared.
im going to college now, and ill have less time to draw. but how do i do to not get "drained" from other stuff and be able to draw. it has happend to me before. maybe its just something that i have to learn to do?
anyways. im loving how this sb is turning out. again i really admire you keeping up with the work altrough the adversities!
cool so you are all about classical mediums that's cool, I want to approach
animation in that way, to make things look unique.
Your stuff looks very very cool don't get me wrong but it looks so finished that
after a while it's kinda all the same it looks good, but I don't see behind your
process, I love the messy sketches from you on the first pages with the ink.

@Aragah: Yea, I definitely have little time to draw, but having time taken away from me made me realize how little time I have left, and so I need to make the best of it. This forces you to procrastinate less. I am a full time student at Hunter College, taking physics modern lab, which I have to learn a math software for, astronomy, calculus, and philosophy, so I have every little time. I am struggling right now to balance my GCA night art class with my full time work from Hunter College.
@iven: Doing realistic or naturalistic rendering is analogous to making a lot of value scales. But a naturalistic drawing is preferable over just making value scales, because you are both understanding line, form, and value at the same time. This helps you become more sensitive to value changes and value relativity. It also forces you to recognize the limits of your medium, such as the pencil and the paper, and how you would simulate the values from reality given the limitations of such mediums.
I also won the Hudson River Fellowship scholarship. I will be going to White Mountains in New Hampshire to do plein air this summer. I wasn't expecting to win.

174. Bunch of stuff. First one is my first alla prima painted with palette knife(new to palette knife painting too) and brush. You will see more of such portrait. The rest are compressed charcoal 2-10 minute gesture sketches on newsprint. The last two figures are from last year.

175-176. Studies of Sargent and Fechin. Former in graphite(limited myself to broad side of the graphite) and latter in conte(limited myself to broad side of conte). Some sharp points are used for facial details.
181-184. First three are some of the hundreds of sketches of unwary commuters that I do on a daily basis, commuting from and to school. I do them in a small 3.5x5 inches Strathmore sketchbook. The sketchbook is bent because I kept it in my pant's pocket, as you can see from my third picture. The last one is an alla prima of an apple, of which I didn't paint the high lights.
Your pencil stuff is sick- I absolutely love it. Great to see that you started at an early age, more time to draw than later on.
What pencils are you using for the full body drawings at the top of this page? So smooth!
@LordLouis: I use mechanical pencils, and I use Pan Pastel to soften my graphite. Pan Pastel are those make-up pad looking soft sponges, which I prefer for blending over the harsh stump.

185-186. First is an alla prima of a red box thingy in a cup. The other is a Watercolor study of Sargent's alligator piece.
Great figurative work Vay! Grand Central Academy churns out some pretty awesome students. Good work on the master studies as well. That Sargent watercolor is great. Keep it up!

187-192. First 4 are more 2-10 minute gesture sketches. The 2nd to last is a sketch I did from imagination some months ago and decided to upload now, so the gesture looks a bit wonky. The last one is another from imagination, the title of the piece is "Red Grass", which I will hope to paint in color sometime in the future.
I have a lot of homework and studying to do with the term papers and calculus tests, so I won't upload too often.

Wow your sketchbook is insane. The work your doing compared to the start of your sketchbook is like night and day. Really impressed by the way your making use of the time you have available to really push your skills its very inspirational, makes me recognise just how lazy I am. Its great to see when someones hard work is paying off for them so you def deserve all the positive feedback your getting. Hope you can keep up this level of intensity and find a way to balance everything. You are making huge strides forward. Your rendering is getting pretty sick too and your gestures are so polished. Really Really cant wait to see more keep up the hard work.
