advice on color, best stuff i've heard and found works for me:
i would say make sure you have a great handle on values before any color cause a piece with good values even if its grey scale will somehow if correct will look more powerful/striking than a color piece.
shifting color temperatures from cold to warm/vice versa is pretty much a huge concept people don't grasp that is key to getting color right.
think of a red stop sign during the day with half of it in shadow and the other half in sunlight. the red color will shift in the highlights to yellows & orange to reds and in the shadow be all sorts of violets magentas and purples.
like every surface contains a huge range of shifting hues
so try and do a piece where its simple muted earthtones and lit by 2 complimentary colors and its a safe bet that it will work.
also look for inspiration for color palates/lighting setups from movies/animation/photography and emulate them but really try and decipher whats going on.
