ROUND #206 - Golbin's Best Friend
ROUND#206 - Goblin's Best Friend
We’ve all heard the expression of dogs being “man’s best friend”, for providing unconditional love to their owners and unconditional malice towards postal workers. But goblins need love, too, sometimes... Your job this week is to design a creature which could function as “goblin’s best friend”. The creature should reflect some of your conception of goblins’ personalities. The creature must look like a domesticated creature, so nothing too gigantic and vicious. Rather, your creature should be something that, when a Goblin is done a hard day’s work of being fodder for young adventurers, might faithfully drool into your lap. Obviously, this competition is about creating original creature designs, so existing creatures depicted in the possession of goblin’s, such as Worgs and Squigs, should be avoided.

finals go here:http://conceptart.org/forums/showthr...70#post3055870
Oh man, this is going to be a great one.
Can't wait to get started!
I love goblins, I'm so excited, however I am not the best at humanoid's yet.
Better get to working on some thumbs.
Is there a chance that the "No accessories or clothing" rule could be a bit lax this round? Goblins are known for throwing all kinds of crap together on themselves and everything they own.
Read the brief carefully, sounds like you're about to paint a goblin. This is to paint a goblin's pet.
Eh. A goblin owns his pet, no? Therefore he might throw all sorts of stuff on the pet.
Hahaha, great topic! Nice briefing too.
Sorry for the blurb/spammy post (I'm innocent) but I noticed that this COW topic reminded me of the latest EOW topic, which is 'In the Hall of the Mountain King' inspired by the music of Edvard Grieg. One of these days we need to do a co-activity again, either all of the activities as one or just this one and the EOW.
Great topic. Making a pet for a creature who's small miserable and vicious. Awsome. Hers is my firstr sketch :
awesome! i really got to do this one!
just thought id share this image haha this is inspiring me quite a bit hahaha
Vulgar', I have a brief formulating in my mind with regards to that. I'll send it to you in the next little while, and we can work on it together. It will happen.
Here is my sketch and ref. It is a mount / protector.
Good star I like the mix between qute pet and monster.
I think you already has fun the creature.
Nice Secund my favorite.
Nice take looking forward to see more.
retter - Sorry I didn't answer this earlier. I will not be making any large exceptions to the clothes or accessories rule. If it's something like a collar, a saddle or something along those lines, this is appropriate for the brief. As I've done in the past, I treat it on a case-by-case basis, if I think you're not following the COW rules, I will let you know.
JanJager - Tons of personality, but the form looks a little humanoid at the moment.
Right now I'm pretty damn tired, so no initial crits for the rest of y'all, but I thought I'd drop off a quick little doodle I did as a warm up. I like the idea that the creature is just the biggest dumbass imaginable.
Here's my WIP.

This is the best topic ever!!
Here's my start, still playing around with shapes and stuffs...
my first post on this forum... got to be curious about this weekly things and decided to try something out.
Thats an Oblorg, a very lazy goblin pet. Think on him as a pig-like beast that doesn't really care about a beat or two, as long there's food around.
Hope you guys like it! Just made it in my lunch break at work...
just working on the values at this point!

Here is my WIP.I noticed that there is already a finals thread for this week's competition but this thread was started only 2 days ago.How much time do I have to submit a final?
I'm sorry if these questions sound stupid but this is my first time on the forums here.

metal_militant, the finals thread is posted at the same time as the WIP thread. You have one week total, and the deadline time is posted in the finals thread (Wednesday).
Great I would like him/her for my best friend.
I like the creature and the obvious friend aspect. Keep on render it out.
It makes me happy.
A bit early to crit but a already like head.
Good combination of dog and toad.
I trying a new take

emerging: You're going the full-blown book illustration route, nice. Alright, riddle me this, 'cause I'm curious: From black/white to color, what's your process?
JanJager: Check you out! How many more winner icons do you want? Enough already :p

Thanks! Basically sometimes I do color right away and sometimes I do grayscale like in this case. Once my values are finished i create a new layer with a soft light option. Then pick basic colors i need and block in the areas. Sometimes you might need to boost the saturation of that layer to bring the colors out more. So for this guy i block in green color and then take a soft red/orangy brush and did the ears and nose. For stronger highlights i used another layer with hard light option on - it gives a nice strong color and almost works like a color burn. When i end up with a lot of layers i just merge visible and work on top of that. Usually you still need to do touch up paint on a regular mode layer. I use a lot of overlay and soft light options though - really quick way to colorize your image. And i pretty much go back and forth between different modes of layers including regular mode. Hope that helps. I might be able to post a wip progress a bit later today cuz i do have many psd versions!

hope i am not too late for my entry. I'm pretty new in this forum. Took me some time to find all the intresting activity threads here.
My basic idea was a creature like a mole or a worm. Something that could be found in earth holes or caves. So i tried to find some interesting references and do the inital sketches...
i decided to go for sketch No.2 and defined some details..
And here is my result for today. goblins best friend: A little fat, slimy, not to bright, never been at the dentist and same hair like me...
Right now i am thinking about the suitable scene / Background.
Maybe a human skeleton hand could be in front of the creature (held by the goblin) .
Any suggestions , ideas, crits? (Very welcome)
Oh man, emerging! That was very kind of you and now I feel a bit guilty. Just like with your entry this round, you went over the top with your explanation as well That was very cool of you.
I find it interesting that you like to use soft/hard light layers. I usually take the black//white layer and tint the entire image (Image Adjustments/Hue-Saturation --> colorize) to make sure there are no more grays/greys (US/British spelling) left. After that I would use a new layer set to "colorize". I should try your route though, as I'm not super crazy about the "colorize" layer method.
