Like the subtleties in value that last one, and the one before that's groovy too, apart from maybe the smudging on Saturn. They both have a sense of volume i sometimes find a bit lacking in your digitals. Great to see you experiment though, i should probably take more of an example.
I really like your figure drawing, you're able to convey so much information with very few lines or fuss - it comes out very pretty.
thanks for the comments everyone, it means a lot! Experimenting with photo textures on this one. There's a lot of potential with this method. However, like a newb I'm relying on the photos a bit too much. I think I need to make better brushes to integrate them into the piece with... o and the ability to paint and draw.. that would be nice lol

Well, I've been complicating things in photoshop lately. Sometimes I get overwhelmed with having so many tools at my disposal, so I decided to limit myself to several tools for this one. I used a triangular brush, triangular eraser, line selection tool, rectangular selection tool and gradients... Everything is masked on its own layer so I can v+ctrl click wherever I want in the image and select that layer. I used Hue/Saturation tool and Levels tool to tweak all of the colors where I want them. I also use the transform tool a lot to morph shapes around. Not the greatest sketch in the world, but hell it only took me an hour, and now that everything is layered I could infinitely tweak one of these if I liked where it was going. It's really therapeutic to limit yourself sometimes. It's been a lifelong battle for me, making things too complicated...

Same as before, only used custom shapes, and textures a bit more... Also, I did a series of 5 min thumbnails prior and chose the one I liked best to touch up. (sry forgot to save a version before i tore into it) It definitely helped that the main idea/composition was there within the first 5 min... that's why this one seemed to gel together a lot faster. Coming full circle to the ideas I learned early on with gesture drawing ... FUN

Psage: Thanks for the vid and comments Chad... you know it's interesting.. I've talked to a few artists that can't stand music with words when they make art... and I sort of agree with them... Don't get me wrong, I love ALL kinds of music... but something about soft, ambient, beat driven music WITHOUT lyrics is really conducive to creative activities... It would be interesting to ask a neurologist if there is something about words that interfere with the thinking process of an artist.. like you need your internal dialogue to be active and not passively paying attention to something else?

Bear with me, I'm still pretty new to my digital process, and a lot of what I'm figuring out lately is how to provide something interesting and QUICK for every day that I post here... Obviously a lot of this stuff lacks depth.. but I love to experiment, so hopefully somebody will enjoy, and find benefit from it.

If you create a new layer above the current layer your working in, hold down alt and put your cursor between the two layers in the palette menu.. click when your cursor turns into a few circles. This will make the new layer masked by the shape in the layer beneath.. That little trick saves SO much time You can link as many layers as you want to that original shape, and erase from the original shape to modify all of the layers at once. That's how I made all of the details in this one.

Here's a piece I did for my brother's band... They play a christmas show every year, and I always make them a nice poster, usually something ridiculous,to grab peoples attention and help generate buzz through word of mouth. The top and bottom is dark to accommodate text, which is why everything seems squashed into the middle third. This is deadlined, even though I think it isn't finished... (are they ever?) Anyways, I'm still never happy with my longer pieces, but I get better/faster with each attempt. Everything is from my head, except some ref for the power lines and the bazooka (two things I'd never painted before?) Hope you like Santa kicking some ass

I like the Santa piece. It's a really ambitious piece.
It's really hard for me to tell where the light that's hitting Santa is coming from (or the main light hitting the creature for that matter)... it looks a little diffused... but it couldn't be the same light source that's hitting the monster crab's underside (which is pretty intense).
I don't think the powerline explosion would be lighting the underside of the creature that much.
If it's a spotlight hitting the creature, I believe there would be harder shadows
Also the foreground feels a little weird perspective--wise... it feels like the ground near the elves' feet drops down too fast as it approaches the bottom edge of the picture, in relation to the ground the creature is standing on.
