Hi all, welcome to my Sketchbook where you'll find loads of work relating to character and prop design. I thought it best to get my work out there as a large body, and start at the very beginning; so the majority of it deals with characterisation through a stylised approach. (alot of what is seen here currently is from my time on the Spyro The Dragon projects.)
That said, I will be updating regularly and showing off my more recent work, so relax, feel free to scroll away and comment as you see fit... much more coming from me very soon!

Hey Peeps, here are some more character based designs from the World of Spyro that I tried to add in yesterday's post... darn my feeble tech skills! I think I tried to add too much These ones were a blast to create... and I rate working with Rodimus on this particular type of work as the best time of my professional career. Thems good ol 'days of the Dragon'. Thanks for the support Peoples, it means a great deal to me. Hope you enjoy the Art all!
Cheers and Regards,

Just putting it all out there Peoples... This work is all about props; those wonderful and diverse range of items that bolster the sence of authenticity within a constructed environment and serve to support the visual style and themes in play.
For me there is a close marriage between prop and environment and developing anything on the Spyro The Dragon titles called for thematic consistency: every prop that was part of a particular level theme drew heavily from its' environment type for materials, palette and shape conventions. I'd try to dress each prop with components that were indicative of the environment from which they came... you'll see what I mean. Hope you enjoy!

Reason: spelling and grammar ;)
Hey all, here's some Creature work I did as part of a Freelance gig for a toy making firm a little ways back. They liked the art but unfortunately these ones never made the cut, so didn't end up becoming toys for my desk top It's all good though, at least I can show them here
The approach was heavily stylised, with robust forms and strong silhouette, but the line work was the interesting part for me as none of them have an exterior line... Style rules were that the outline had to be recessive, and the internal lines made more prominant. It was a very different approach for me, but it was fun to try, and coming up with the creature names and discriptions was a blast too. Hope you like em!
Keep on slammin Peoples,

Okies... time for some beastly illustration! This image is one from my personal art blog and was the 'pilot image' that kicked things off for me in May this year. If you'd like to see this one much larger then feel free to visit:
Basically I was inspired by Avatar (yes like everyone else, lol) and was so moved on both a creative and spiritual level that I was compelled to start painting...this. This one was a real work of the soul for me; one that freed me from the duty of creating 16 x 16 pixel icons! At least for a while. Long story... enjoy!
I think it is Ted Perry that is accredited with saying: 'What is Man without the Beasts?' For sure there is a primal connection between the two, one that I love to tap into when I create. And so, to populate the world of this sketchbook I give you Creatures, the first of many rounds. What can I say? I'm just a big old Creature buff?
These are roughs that one day I'll develop into final designs and feature on my blog... but until then they can run loose in here! Who knows? Maybe they'll multiply? Hope you likes

Hey Jared, loved the way you layed out all the spyro concepts. I believe there was much more though We could've published an "Art of" too. Wish we had. The Creatures are looking hot bro, keep up the fantastic work, very inspirational stuff.
These are quite amazing! I just joined this site and it's a pleasure to see the quality works that are posted here; i'm not near as talented as all of you guys and gals, but i hope to get there one day
What i love about these images are the vibrant color work as well and interesting lighting and suggestions at texture. Very nice work, i believe that the minecart creature was my favorite.
Rodimus25.. Bro we definitely could have created our own 'Art of' book for the reimagined Spyro Universe... I'd have to talk to the Publishers; gees you just never know hey
Coldrum, as always Bro you are an inspiration... keep on slammin down that righteous art goodness
Omunall, kind thanks for the words of encouragement... if its one thing I've learnt its that persistance pays off... that and having a group of guys and gals around you that are developing alongside you. Having support makes all the difference. Keep on Posting!
Hi Peeps, havn't posted in quite some time...that's what contract work will do to you! (But I'm thankful) I've had this little beasty for a while and wanted to work up a batch of art prior to posting, but sometimes the animal just wants out... and I just have to start posting again
I'm planning on taking this one furthur in my art blog and creating an illustrated piece featuring this particular critter, but for now I hope you like this little offering.
Hey talented art Peeps! This savage has not posted in quite some time so... better late than never! I call this one the 'Naysayer'; but one of the many fiendish denizens that prowl my mind. Hope you enjoy! More work on the way... no really! Honest!
If you'd like to see a full write up on the rationale behind 'Naysayer' feel free to visit my blog at:
These were some roughs I began last year, but once I got back on the freelance wagon it was all ahead full, and so these sat idle for a bit. I tightened them up for presentation and so here there are!
More coming in this space... I'm hoping to push things as much as I can both look dev wise and skill wise. So much to master... channelling my energies into updating my folio right now while I look for steady work.
Crits very very welcome! Hit me... I am here to learn!
That spyro stuff is pretty much the coolest thing ever. I adore spyro in general, I'm ridiculously jealous that you got to work on it ^_^
You've got a great knack for creatures - your latest post suggests you don't do as much with humanoid stuff. The eye and mouth area are a bit flat- If you compare those with post 10 it's like 2 different people.
Post 10 is probably the best image overall- but post 7 is my favorite - I love the trees and the shields are the cutest!
Happy sketching! looking forward to more updates for sure.
Cheers Rhubix, I meant to thank you and comment sooner! You're dead on with the humanoid comment... I'll be hitting this area harder in the near future. Yes Post 10 was something I put some real time and love into... which is what I'm looking to do with subsequent pieces!
Many thanks Rhubix... I deeply appreciate everything you've said
He all, did this one a few days ago and finished it off this morning... I'm keen to keep exploring this space and keep working on my values, forms and most importantly... my ideas; in order to come up with something fresh in 2012. Not there yet (not 100% happy with that last post) and so I will keep peddling away! Crits + comments always welcome
Hey Art Peoples, in the interest of moving forward here is my latest symmetry painting. A more thorough exploration of texture, translucency and glossy light from contact with wet surfaces... still miles to go so will keep smashing along until I nail where I want to be.
