I don't know what I could criticize, so I think you're on the right track.
Keep it coming!
@empy Will do!
Waddayaknow, 2nd page, awesome!
So I'm knee deep in Michael Hampton, I started the gesture chapter, then I went mad.
Definitely made some progress, but I'm kind of burned out on the figure, gonna start on architecture/landscape.
Nice studies man. Got any tips on drawing full bodies?
I propose a draw off for our sketchgroup. Find the cutest animal you can find and draw it to the best of your abilities. When we are all done we will critique each others and provide some helpful tips. Also instead of just drawing a cute creature try and write down some of your struggles and things you really like about your drawing. We can compare these notes.
The Head, Rib Cage, and Pelvis are the three masses constant in every figure. They don't bend, and are pretty much the same in every figure, proportions vary.
That and learn male and female proportion. Difference in hips, shoulders, etc. Men average 7 1/2 heads, women 7.
Hope that helps, and yeah I would be down for a draw off, would there be a set date or deadline? I think it would be the only way it would happen.
It would have to be 2 weeks that way it gives everyone time to read about it here and find time to draw. Deadline could be November 20th.
good progress in here. You sure learned smth about the flow of the figure. Give yourself a little more time with your drawings, even with those, that seem to be just gesture drawings. Start with the gesture in a fast way, thats cool, but then try to get the 3dimensionality of the figure by using simple blocks and cubes .
Just like you did with the last page in #38, upper right. Thats the right groundwork. Then try to finish such a drawing to a certain degree that pushes you out of your comfort zone. Even if you think youre gonna ruin it, that doesnt matter. Those mistakes will help your understanding of the drawing -provided you spot them and try to solve them^^
What Im saying is, get a simple process down that makes you deal with one problem at a time.
But dont nail me on anything ive said, im not a pro
anyways, keep it up man
Still drawing daily, I've just been contemplating my work, and couldn't be bothered to post. I'm up 72 hours, not counting the work I've done and had not timed. Three solid days of work over something like a month, crazy.
And to my sketch group, my cute animal thing (if that's still happening?)
Nice animal drawing. Did you have any struggles while attempting it? Did you pull from photo reference or imagination?
Continue with the life drawings. They look great. Would you recommend Michael Hamptons book? I need to work on gesture and I'm not sure where to start myself.
That was a long hiatus, life got in the way. I'm at a bit of a crossroads in my life, but that hasn't stopped me from drawing.
I've lost a bit of the zeal I had for doing studies, they just began to feel stale. Though I was wary of it, I started sketching outside and I have't looked back since. Being in Europe (Studying abroad) has flip my art world upside down.
I've more or less fell in love with Van Gogh's work, especially his drawings. His marking making vibrates on the page, he really was ahead of his time.
As far as what I want to do with art, don't really know anymore. I was leaning toward illustration, now, who knows. I don't feel that's a bad thing.
Sketches from the metro, museums, street etc.
From weekend in Amsterdam
A self portrait...
And a particularly fun doodle.
And to my sketch group brethren, what's up?
Good Lord, there are some really good updates. I love the loose pose drawings and the more detailed studies. Keep it up, man!
Hey SSG fellows,
I need your help.
I want to start drawing digitally, but I really don't know where to start. I want to do environmental designs, but also creatures and that stuff. Should I start by doing photo studies? Anatomy studies? Just paint?
My problem is: I try to start something, but then I struggle with questions like: b/w and then color, or first color then detail, which settings or which brushes and so on.
It would be reeeally helpful, if you just suggest something like drawing an apple, drawing a photo or something more specialized. Or if you just have a link or a video to get things started.
Thanks and keep it coming guys!
Shit art is great art.
A lot of the time I find myself in need of just making art for the sake of keeping myself working. If I focus on studies too long I get burned out real quickly and lose the drive to do anything. Nate Van Dyke said it best when he said, "With are you just got to do it, you don't have time to wait for inspiration." Not his exact words but pretty much the gist of it.
I think anyone getting into art should spend the first 3 months just trying to actually draw. Not worrying about what their drawing or where their at in their studies.
So yeah, continue making shit art and I'll do the same. Then we can compare and see who does a shittier job.
I definitely agree that the most important aspect of learning to draw is simply to draw, but I think that, for me at least, studies help me learn the technical side of art a thousand times better than simply creative art. On a side note, sorry I haven't dropped in for a while. Your art is looking great, keep it up!
God and other artists are always a little obscure. - Oscar Wilde
All art is but imitation of nature. - Lucius Annaeus Seneca
@Sigonwulf: Battle of the titans. Though yes, I plan to make a lot of shit.
@Holsterdraw: I glad you think so. It's hard to judge growth, but I like to think I do grow at a steady clip.
Enough self-deprecating! This week's batch didn't turn out too bad.
New stuff. I love toned paper. Utrecht recycled.
Yeah that update doesn't look like shit at all bro. Looks like awesome. Keep working at it bro. It's only gonna get better the more you invest into it.
I really think we all should exchange aims, skype, emails or something to help keep each other motivated.
Woah, you're improving fast! I couldn't say that for myself. The last studies are outstanding!
Thanks empy. Don't think I haven't seen your recent digital paintings, I'd like to see them finished.
Still drawing, just been lazy with posting. Just recently I've broached 100 HOURS(!!!) solid of drawing. Feels good man.
More sketches incoming.
A good bit of us have gotten lazy on the posting part. I just did a painting. Just haven't felt like posting anything.
Is that a statue?
Ah man, we can't have that. But as long as you're still drawing it could be worse.
It's a statue of shiva.
So, recently I've made over the first hurdle, I'm ONE HUNDRED HOURS IN! (103 to be exact)I also realized that I had to limp my way through toward the end, I lost sight of the goal for awhile. So right now I'm reaffirming my self for the next hundred, I'll attempt draw (and post) everyday, and record the time spent and my total time with each post.
With that said, here we go again.
15 min. of gestures
40 min. (10 each) figure drawing. I have to get faster on these.
And around 2 hrs just drawing, I find it hard to concentrate on just on facet in a sitting.
I like this life drawing
Finally, some sketches I meant to post awhile ago
Great your back, I'm enjoying your new stuff!
Say, which reference do you use for those poses? Posemaniacs?
