The trend I'm noticing in your work is this flatness. Your drawing skills suggest form and depth and movement, and you have great designs and detail, but your treatment is so even that my eyes get lost and just want to glaze over the images.
I think there are two major issues here:
A) Your detail treatment is entirely even. My eye has no idea what's most important. Consider really detailing the most important part (i.e. the warthog(?)'s face fur, just to draw some attention.
B) Your color choices are GORGEOUS but so neatly put together. My eye really easily travels from hue to hue and value to value without any idea what to pay attention to. Colors naturally have tendency to move forward and back based on saturation and value. You are AMAZING at mixing them so they exist very flatly. This is awesome, don't get me wrong (my color theory classmates would have killed for that). But it's confusing in an illustration. Try to play with color as a depth tool even more. Yellows will really bring things to the front, and grayish purple will go waaay back. Don't be afraid to highlight a little more for frontal object, or to desaturate the back. Your flat application is gorgeous and intriguing, but it reads more as a painting technique/exercise than as a good tool for a readable illustration.

That last EOW..... yup. Your humble beginnings are bound to transform into some form of penultimate enviro-overlord in a few months or so. Keep it up Twig see you in the EOW again sometime.

autumncoloredmelodie: Thanks for the critique! I tried to bring out he boar's face with some more detail. Compositional I have the boars face right in the middle of a golden spiral if you would overlay one on the image it end right on his face. I thought that would help guide the eye through the painting. Also, I realize I do have a tendency to muddy my paintings up with a similar hue throughout. I am trying to create an atmosphere, but it really made for a flat image. I think the new sky adds more depth than the last version. Anyways thanks again for the critique every helpful
Here some updates and a shitty speed paint.
Love the update. I think the yellow on the boar's nose and the blue-gray in the back are really pushing away from each other now. I think, too, that the newer has more atmosphere at a quick glance. The clouds really stand out, which compliments the idea of movement and dust. I love that the boar is most rendered, as it helps my eye rest there. Gorgeous work!

the giant boar is coming along nicely.
you could push the colours in the sky even further(gurneylink), and it would give you the chance to more colour to the rest of the piece.

still life. Fell flat on my face with this one. Colors are tough from life. Nothing on the monitor seems to come close to what I see in real life.

I think the top one turned out the best because of the clear values, something to keep in mind when picking ref.
as for colours from life. understanding helps, so i recommend gurenys book and just sticking it out you'll see better with practise.

adamsimons: Thanks man! Totally agree with the ref. I've been studying old black and white photo which don't really capture all the possible values. Also I own and have read both Gurney's books. Gotta start putting that info to good use.

Just got back from trip to mexico with my family. Time to get back in the groove of things.
Awesome updates! Only crit I can think of right now is that you can spend more time thinking about the direction of your brushstrokes and your brusheconomy. I really like the smooth brushes on that spoon in the last post! Keep it up!
Great studies here Twig. You are progressing quickly. You already have a great sense of design and color theory. Most of the crits I would say have been said already I think. If you aren't working with layers yet I would suggest trying that with your enviro studies. Dile had a great comment about brush stroke and economy. How can you define a shape or plane of light with one brush stroke. I think your biggest issue still is edge control and variation. Working with layers will help you here. Edges don't have to always just be sharp in the foreground and soft in the background but varied to add interest. You can start to think about pulling the eye with detail and color like its been stated. Take a look at Justin Sweet's work and you'll see how loose he can be but pop the detail or color in the right spots to pull your eye around. Keep working hard man. You are improving fast

You're doing pretty well but sometimes your painting looks a bit blurry or soft edged. Your colours are a bit straightforward, ie trees are green, sky is blue maybe mix it up a little with complimentaries. Don't forget texture either.
Dile Thanks! Trying to be more careful now with my brush strokes. Found out to neat trick is count how many strokes you think something should take to paint before hand. To be honest, before I wasn't even thinking in brush strokes, just push around paint without ever picking up my pen. Just being sloppy! Thanks again Dile, great advice much appreciated.

Ninjac Layer management Layer management!! I am going to burn this into my brain . I pretty sloppy with my layers. Most of my studies that start organized but ended up flattened. LOTS of jumping around. Thanks, the advice is much appreciated. Btw Justin Sweet's stuff is blowing my fucking mind. so so good!
Mussy: Thanks! Implying and texture is something I need to get working on. Environments are tough like that. I thinking about doing a long master study perhaps a Hudson River school piece. Suppose the masters know how its done.
