ROUND #211:: Aladdin
The story of Aladdin is one of the most famous tales of the Book of One Thousand and One Nights. The Middle-Eastern folktale tells about the young and poor Aladdin who is hired by a sorcerer to retrieve a magic oil lamp. Aladdin finds out the lamp contains a powerful djinni, who helps him to become rich and wealthy. Aladdin then marries the beautiful princess Badroulbadour.
- You may pick any part of the story to base your character design on, from the poor thief to the wealthy emperor.
- You are free to place Aladdin in any time period you'd like, but stick to the general story.
- Focus on character design, not the illustration! Make Aladdin a real and interesting character!

although i'm on short holiday this week and won't participate,i'll say good luck everyone! personally i can't get the disney version out of my head,it's kind of blocking all other thoughts
Does this mean time period as well? Or could we do some kind of future, parkour-hacker Aladdin?Stick to the setting: although there are other interpretations of the story, we stick to the Middle-Eastern version.
Edit: ...Because I'm working on a future-parkour-hacker Aladdin:

This one ought to be interesting...*_*
EDIT - And I`m...done? Wow, that was fast. Maybe I should re-think it all...:/
EDIT - With some extra time on my hands (yea, right...all those exams will be passed by themselves -_-), why not try something new? Several versions of Aladdin! Now serving number 2 - steampunk.
EDIT - Almost done. I`m really enjoying this, how do they call it...? Cha-ra-cter de-sign, is it...^_^

awesome topic. feeling a prince of persia vibe
this should be intresting
@pxelslayer- reminds me of the prince of persia ,looking good
Question - Can we also "explore" other styles, like steampunk, cyberpunk or tribal, AS LONG as it retains the Middle Eastern flare?
Hmm, well, now that we can include other time periods, I may have to rethink this. :o He's looking a little too prince of persia-ish anyway..
It's when you can't hear the bats, that's when the bats are coming.
Here's my Aladdin, in the story he is asked to fetch and empty the oil lamp. He just poured out the oil when a hint to the lamp's real content appears. Crits appreciated!
i didnt like the topic at first but then i said come on, this can be fun. starting sketch.
the scene is, well, from the very beginning of this street junkie's story.
@Arthemis IX: Thank you for the compliment! I like the way your piece is coming along, very dramatic lighting. I also really like the costume.
@PxelSlayer: I love the pose and expression. The face on the left is my favorite, but I'm a not a huge fan of the Padawan braid.
@silentkitty: I think the face is looking really nice, but the lower body seems gigantic in comparison to the upper body.
@cz64: The scene you've created is very dramatic, but it's not the direction I would go in to showcase the character design of Aladdin....
Here's my color rough:
Pah. First week I have clear in a long time to resume and I can't seem to get inspired by the theme. Too many memories of bad panto as kid ("he's behind you").
Testing out some different heads. I'm going for a lazy, untroubled Aladdin; he strikes me as the classic dunderhead archetype in the original tale.
EDIT: Added the WIP. As the tale is set in China-- something I hadn't realized, as it's been quite a while since I last read it-- I decided to go with a Chinese peasant farmer version of Aladdin. I'm trying to experiment with color/texture more; hopefully it'll work out well in the end. *Another edit: I was iffy on the first pose-- something about the weight balance seems off to me, and it's not very dynamic-- so I sketched up another one.
@pxel-- I got a stronger Aladdin vibe from the first hairstyle. Since you're going with the more historic design, the mini dreads seem out of place. They do give him a little extra flare, though.

I'm just realizing how hard it is to think of a design for Aladdin that is not influenced by Disney stuff. My mind is totally deseased by Disney's conception of Aladdin. I do not even remember the original tale. Sucks.
I think Disney Aladdin and Prince of Persia have both latched on to my subconscious...at any rate, here's what I got so far.
Gonna see how far I can get on this!
wow seems like this is gonna be another great round, so many great sketches already!
some rough comps, trying to capture the climactic moments in the story, first comp=betrayal, second comp=love, third comp=despair
never really read any other story other than seeing the disney version as a kid, but here's a link to the story that I just read to get an idea of what it was about, if anyone else is interested
Here's my finished linework, I'll prolly extend this to include the entire figure. Comments and Crits are VERY welcome. I'll post crits tomorrow when I've got time,
this is my version of aladin...
would like to hear some critiques from you guys...
view my blog
Dammit, ever since I saw this topic there's been a medley of half-remembered disney songs playing in my head.
Good stuff coming up so far. Hopefully I've avoided/minimised the disney influence. So
come on down, stop on by, hop a carpet and fly to another Arabiiiian...
Bring out your crits, asspats, and assorted comments
I got me a sketchbook...
Slow, yet hopefully steady, improvement. This way
Seems kind of a shame that you are insisting on a Middle Eastern Aladdin, since every source (other then the Disney movie) I can find on the character explicitly states he is a young Chinese guy. I just thought that since the Disney character is so well known it might be interesting to see some peoples takes on a Chinese version of the guy but you are the boss Arthemis IX so an Arab looking guy it is!
Anyway the real reason I came here was to post my sketch!
TaDA! Let me know what yall think.
I took Middle Eastern to mean we could go with the Chinese version, unless Arthemis XI states otherwise.
