I'm not sure which art school is best for me? Desired Major: Animation/Illustration
Hi I'm sure this forum gets many posts like this and I'm sorry if it is repetitive!
I'm currently attending a community college just to get the basic "art history" "drawing 1/2" "painting 1/2" and so on out of the way. I really want to transfer for the fall semester to one of the schools but haven't gone about applying to anything yet since money is tight and applying to 7-10 schools would cost near $400 or so when it comes to application fees. So I've kind of been waiting to see if I would favor any schools in particular.
I want to either be in animation or illustration or both. My real passion would be to do concept art for movies or games, character design, story boarding, etc. I'm very interested in 2D animation and illustration but I think the two can go hand in hand with eachother as both are usually used to tell a story or relay an idea.
Though my primary style is more "anime" I'm very willing to elaborate on the style and make it my own someday.
Here are examples of how I draw:
I've been looking at colleges for forever and am easily persuaded by friends who have been to one or the other with the mentality of "Wow they are talented, I want to go to the college they went to so I can be just like them." I know this isn't an accurate way of thinking but I've been caught up with colleges such as MICA, SVA, or SCAD just because I had friends who went there.
The colleges I'm looking at are:
and maybe even RISD
A few of the schools such as Calarts and Art Center don't allows transfers into their animation department, and many schools don't allow "double majors".
I'm always having an internal fight on which one to choose if having to choose between animation and illustration.
Even though I've been attending a community college for a few semesters I wouldn't mind not being able to transfer into a department and having to start as a freshman, if anything many of the classes may have helped me with my understanding of art and refining my portfolio and skills so it wouldn't be a TOTAL waste I should hope.
I live in Maryland so MICA is in my backyard and it would mean I could continue to live in my parent's home and be able to stay with my cats. Regardless I would have to apply for loans in order to attend when it comes to any college, my parents aren't helping me pay for college at all.
But I really want to go to a very good and "elite" college. I'm under the impression their programs are great because I see some of the alumni for each school in pixar or other animation companies that make some of my all time favorite movies and shows. I also see some of the student works are very impressive. I feel like if I apply to any of these top schools it would give me a chance in finding a good job after since they are well known and respected schools, so they'd be impressive on a resume.
Can anyone tell me about any of the schools I've listed or might suggest any I haven't listed?
Could anyone give me information on what they think about the best schools to attend? Please tell me what you know about this major!
