getting a little bit of a late start, and I hope I've got time to finish this...
I've got this thing for music and myths about musicians either challenging the devil or selling their soul to be able to play as well as he does. So I started with the idea that the Devil is the ultimate King of music, with a particular love for Rock, Punk, Metal, etc.
I've even got a playlist going for inspiration:
"Red Right Hand" - Nick Cave
"Sympathy for the Devil" - Rolling Stones
"Tribute" - Tenacious D
"My Way" - Sex Pistols
"Bad Moon Rising" - Creedence Clearwater Revival
"Behind Blue Eyes" - The Who
"The Game" - Disturbed
"Dazed and Confused" & "Gallows Pole" - Led Zepplin
"Bad to the Bone" - George Thoroughgood
"Mr. Crowley" - Ozzy
"Bat Out of Hell" - Meatloaf
and of course "Devil Went Down to Georgia" - Charlie Daniels Band
So I'm going to try to weave some of those themes into this, and draw inspiration from some of the best guitarists ever. Jimmy Page in particular comes to mind (listen to Dazed and Confused if you want to hear how utterly creepy and wicked a bow sounds when used on an electric guitar).
BTW: What's up with the attachment manager?
This is my first time chow joining. There are some great ideas here! Keep it up guys!
I decided to make a pop queen and made some rough sketches. After that i've googled for madonna and lady gaga ( i actually don't listen both of them=)) and found exactly what i was looking for...
Here are an inspiration and exploration board for my design:
lissinator I love that concept! I don't think I've seen it yet here. Some suggestions: if you're gonna go with this pose maybe her hands should be more expressive (cuz Broadway's all about big) and her right foot maybe needs to be turned in a bit more. I'd say just go big or go home. This is what came to mind immediately with the name up in lights and big arms. haha:
Refschaufscheik - It definitely seems to me that the 3/4 rule works with it. I mean, I haven't been around that long, but it wouldn't make sense for it not to include clothing! Something with the placement of her left arm seems off to me -- also, I think it would be really neat if both the hands looked like they were playing the instrument, or had just been? Her right hand already sort of does this for me. This is looking great so far.
vibhas_virwani - I really like the use of colors in this design -- they're very cohesive and definitely add to the overall design. I especially like the stark contrast between the orange-red and the blue. Looking awesome.
lissinator - I think that's a neat concept, and it could go a lot of ways (I'm excited to see which way it does go). The idea of the light-up crown sounds awesome, I think. Also, I think you could do something really neat with the background, like put in an obviously staged backdrop/set of the land she reigns over.
Here's an update on the quing of post-rock. I corrected some things, and added some designs to the cello.
Also. For the first time, I had a post-rock song stuck in my head. That was kind of weird. I blame this CHoW.
Hello all, thought I would take a stab at this one. Queen of metal!! A little cliche I suppose but I hope I can color it without totally wrecking it. Anyhoo any crits are greatly appreciated as I really need them. Still working on what will be on the end of the sceptre, thought the angelic guy was kinda funny.
Not much of an update but..
I hit a wall, does anyone have any solid reference for musicians playing instruments? These hands are driving me nuts .
Thanks Sholly. My thoughts exactly...
And yeah - I shows I didn't really think it through with the left arm... I think I will give it a purpose - maybe some sheet music... Dunno yet - we'll see.
Thanks for the feedback - it helps loads...
The first sketch I did of her looked like she was yawning, so I drew the middle pose to make her look more excited and seem like she was belting...I realize she probably should have her chest sticking out rather than slouching...I will try it out later...the other two sketches are just different costume ideas
Sakuranym: I love Celtic music and I love this. I think you really captured the feel with the character and the colors you used. Def my favourite!
Stinger88: I like it so far but maybe your wanting more energy in the pose and thats why your not happy with it? For some reason I think of the Statue of Liberty when I look at it. Really like the costume though.
Lissinator: I think your on to something with the middle pose, I definately like it the best out of the three. Cant wait to see what you end up doing with it.
Reymus - that is really coming out wonderfully. If I come across any refs, I'll let you know!
lissinator - I agree with your take on the first pose, and I think you're right about the second. With her chest out like she is really belting it out, it will be awesome!
so much awesome work ^^
@Stinger88 - liking the costume on her. will be interesting to see how it comes out.
@Sakuranym - looks awesome!! om crit maybe the left upper arm is alittle short. maybe.
@Reymus looks real nice man. maybe look at some people playing different cords on the guitar's etc for refs.
reworked my idea quite abit. after reading daestwen's post.
tried to make her more of a monarch than a rock star.
reworked the composition to make it work better as a mascot image.
and played around with the ideas of heart break and death. haha seems a very fitting emo theme. also going to try and paint this one alitte differently. kinda like my 277 daily self portrait abit.
Sakuranym I love it! I have some crits though they're more like nitpicks. I can't really understand the big drops coming from her hand. What's their purpose? Also the hand holding the instrument could perhaps use a much more dynamic pose, like holding a tighter grip of the instrument or something. Looking forward for the final!
no87 Could perhaps a stream of black mass come pouring out from her head like if she's really shot herself, like if it's the stream of her dark thoughts going out of her head?
Perhaps she should have a really big dark cape around her, symbolising her emotional burden or something.
Reymus - I love the rendering, man! And colors...pffft...sweet. As for the hands - I hear ya. Having the same problem. If I stumble upon some refs, I`ll let you know
Sakuranym - Love it. Again, colors...god, I hate people who are good with colors. And the design overall really fits what you are going for. Great work!
Small update. 5 down, more or less, 2 to go. This one is going to be...interesting...yea. X.x
PxelSlayer - the composition is awesome, and your skill in anatomy is amazing. Especially 2nd from the left girl. She looks phenomenal. Can't wait to see how you're going to incorporate the music stuff in!
Sakuranym - Your colors are great!
Here are two sketches about posture. I think i'm going to work on second one...
As an outsider to hip hop, I usually associate a king with a bit of bling? Like may be a few diamonds on the clock pendant and a crown placed at a jaunty angle ( but then perhaps it wouldn't math his serious expression). A jeweled sceptre perhaps?
Hey Chowers. Here's a little WIP stuff. I was hesitant to do anything with Metal, but once again, the dark forces have sucked me in. I think I'd like to try something like a Justin Bieber meets Michael Bolton next. Maybe not.
This is my progress on Russian metal Royalty Cyril Petrov, complete with semi-consious lady friend. I did another take on metal that got me nowhere, so I slapped it, and I'm moving on.
Had fun with the last CHOW bio. JessiBean and Bendragon threw it down with some really nice work.
Lalilulelo: I think the way you're going with this piece is interesting. The circle that frames the figure really reminds me of an icon.
Bnoch: This is one of the strongest entries I've seen so far. I love that you spent time to research the portraiture of people like Napoleon.
Mine looks a tad awful after all that, but here's some progress. I'm liking how the colors are turning out, but I really need to work on fixing that right hand.
I sort of had this visions of women's voices and sirens and muses and water nymphs, more of a mythological bend. And then I drew this and quickly ran out of ideas.
lalilulelo - I absolutely adore the crown. Are you going to emphasize it so it's a focal point?
bnoch - wow…just wow…
ninjacat11 - it's coming along. i like the color scheme. she's looking kind of skeletal, though.
soupandbutter - i like both!
rgeorge - I hadn't even thought of the music of the Sirens! awesome concept!
Here is my latest "progress". I use the term loosely because I feel like I take a step forward and two steps back. I reworked the crown to go for more silver/chrome, I think the gold was overkill. Thoughts?
@AimBiZ thanks man! gona play around with those ideas abit. lol was thinking about something similar but thought it would get way to click almost. still want to give it ago see if i can take it in a different direction.
@PxelSlayer looks a great start. your doing 7 character total? man that's gona look awesome! ^^
@Bnoch maaaaan, thats soo awesome!!
@ninjacat11 maybe try using a bigger brush to block in abit. think you got alittle to focused on details to early. that said, its a interesting image. will be interesting to see how it comes along
messing around with abit more.
razor blade and stanley knife crown. with a broken heart in ther.
loads of cross hairs.
the lryic at the top wont stay, just keeps me thinking about the mood i want to set her in atm.
think im going to try and find a ref for the hands.
wouldn't mind some crits. ^^
