Well, what better time to grab myself by the gonads and do my fist Chow than when it is the round that the new "mascot" is chosen. The topic is too hard to resist, and there is a month to make it kick ass.
Going for dance/techno music, but with an indian flair, since most the dance music I like to listen to has middle eastern or indian influences.
So here are some sketches of my 1930s jazz queen. I rethought the pose and I think I'm gonna go with the smaller one in the corner. Thoughts anyone?
A MONTH? Hell this is gonna produce some fine art then Time for some proper R&D and a lot of polish
Scetchbook: View the exhibitionist's stuff.
I'm new to conceptart.org challenges (although i joined the forum back in 2009..) I love creating characters and i think CHOWS will be my favourite part of this forum.
First one is OperaRock king (might need some more "king's things" like a crown or something like that) and second "Rumba" Queen (it doesn't convince me yet).
I'm glad to see there are so many suuuupergood artists here.
Nice to meet you all!
Monkeysills - i prefer the pose of the little top corner one - i'd use that one in large, and then maybe do a face close up in the corner instead?
Oh, man, this is one I've *got* to get past the WIP stage for! I notice nobody seems to have touched Soul, so I already have my idea (shall edit once I have a sketchy-sketch, sometime tonight, hopefully).
The Queen of Soul weeps for you, yet rejoices for those who are free. She loves you all, and wants you to know that love, and hope, will set you free too...

-Darkwolf (aka Jamie Thomas Durbin)
I'm in. A month?? Wow! But i will have to start right away, as long deadlines are often not as long Gonna do some research and collect references first. My take would perhaps be a king in classical music, ... perhaps. I can imagine the serious face of Beethoven already
bagsy Stephen O'Malley!
Play your Doom AXE!
Here is my Sketchbook. Please have a look if you have time. Thanks.
My goal is to at least complete this ChOW! I'm thinking Mozart's Muse-ical Monarch.
Decided to give my King a wierd wind/string instrument, kind of a one man band instrument, but less tacky. Cause it's magic and stuff.
Not sure about my horse pose here, can't say I've drawn many horses before so I'm a bit nervous.

Man, I love this topic. It is too juicy NOT to jump in. Of course when I think of music and I hear the work "King", I think of B.B. King (the King of the Blues). I'm not going to do a caricature or portrait of him but instead I'll base this one heavily on him as well as other blues singers/guitarists/etc. Hopefully in the final draft there will be a lot of the cues to hint at who all I'm referencing.
For now, here's a very basic WIP with a color test on the face to establish skin tone (since I suck at colors).

a MONTH?! Awesomesauce...
Here's mine, meet Jimmy Octopuss, the king of glam rock and hair metal

- "Uhm, that's a little extreme, commander."
One of my specialities is horses, so i can help you a little! Your drawing style is really gorgeous and has something of an Alan Lee feel to it, and there are only two things anatomically i would alter a bit.
If you go and check out the bone structure of a horse head you can see that its mostly bony, hardly any soft squidgy bits - and yours appears slightly soft (if that makes sense), also from the angle you are at, its unlikely you'd see as much of the inside (hollow) of the nostril. There is HEAPS of reference online for horses - but looks like you do know the basics of horses and which direction their legs bend etc (recently saw a picture someone had done of pegasus and the front knees were bent backwards!), but the bone which runs between the knee/hock of the horse is always shorter than the knee to elbow/joint (where it meets the body) - its called the cannon bone. Check out this skeleton pic... http://www.circlerranch.com/crcimages/asideskeleton.gif
The front cannon bones look a touch too long - and if this image was stood sideways-on the front legs would be longer than the back ones I think. Just a perspective thing. Horses are SO hard to draw!!
Anyway, I hope you do'nt mind me commenting! I love the idea of the instrument - it is so elaborate, how are you going to paint this, in traditional or computer media?
Oh also, if you want to be totally nerdy about it - if you want reference for a Horse of Kings... google 'andalusian stallion' or 'spanish PRE Stallion' - this breed was once known as the horse of kings, you see them in virtually all movies now which want showy and dramatic looking steeds. I've added one of my photos of a spanish horse for you - this one is doing what is known as a 'spanish trot' - so its super exaggerated and pretty much just for showing off (kings like to pose right?)
Sorry, i've totally bored everyone to tears!
Thanks a bunch ArtByManon, that's all really helpful, and yeah I really see what you mean about the anatomy now it's been pointed out. I love the spanish trot too, definitely going to use that.
To answer your question, I'm considering using gouache or oils for this chow considering the ample time frame.
It's cool to be able to do more than one entry but how will it work out (considering this will probably have more people contributing designs than usual being the 200th and extra long)? Is the limit on the poll getting raised or will there be extra-brutal cuts?
Also Monkeysills - The pose on the left looks better, though the right one could look good with more careful anatomy, the arms/shoulders look a little inelegant there at the moment. The deco back of her throne is a good idea though - could really frame the character nicely.
Pinback: Lovin' it man!
really excited to see the finish
I thought of a queen, as groupie. all bands have groupies ^ ^
and Black No. 1 from Type O Negative, was my inspiration for now.
- Peter Steele RIP
I would draw a hot girl, to honor Frank Frazetta.
Hmm, how can I resist?

Just an initial sketch. This is going to be a super fun topic.
Aly Fell - Sweet pose for the Queen of Punk. It's dynamic and more interesting than the goth one.
Jason Rainville - Love the take on it and the olden "royalness" added in it. Great sketch so far.

Awesome!!! Gonna kick my own butt to finish this in 4 weeks!
PxelSlayer and Sakuranym really caught my eye so far... Keep up the great work everyone!
Soooo, I think I'm going with dark, moody IDM/Dubstep with a bit of Björk and the voice of Florence Welsh mixed in... how weird is that?

I plan to do a homage to Frank Frazetta's work. I fully expect that up coming challenges will be Frazetta related but as its a special CHOW I can't resist.
I'll be doing a Barbarian Queen with maybe a dragon behind her.
Expect a curvacious women with BIG hair, BIG hips and BIG Boobs.
Although, I will be keeping nudity to a minimum unless I feel the image would benefit from it.
The female in this one is sort of thing i'm after.
Good Luck all
