After seeing so many beautiful art works, it really needs courage for me to apply for a sketch book. I am pretty new here, hope could learn from your critiques.
I am a media design student in age 20. Because I don't have a solid understanding of traditonal art, I am not good at coloring,,, Pencil Sketching is ok I guess,,,
I just started my digital painting recently. It was fun but difficult in some aspect,,,really need more practice,,,I hope I could update often and learning from you guys' masterpieces!!
Here are some pictures I am working on recently.
Sorry for bad English,,,and thanks for your critiques!!

Hey welcome to CA. I like your painting there. its very bluish
and cool looking. Keep doing those and you'll do fine.
Thank you guys!! I still trying different usage of the interface on CA,,,
Struggling with using sensible color when working,,,
some pencil sketches done recently,,,face studies and practices. I found that it would be difficult to find a right proportion after drawing head,,, How people do life drawing? I feel embarrassed drawing on sketch book while waiting for a bus,,,
Face coloring and practice again~ 3 hours painting (pretty slow).
Hope someone could give me some suggestions on coloring before
I made any unreturnable mistake,,, I am lost to add light or
atmosphere most of the time,,,
I try to do some anotomy studies,,,I barrowed some books from
the libaray but just do not know how to started. Should I just
"REDRAW" the pictures on the books? Hope someone could give
me some direction,,,
Another small practice of bust,,, I give up finishing the last one because I can't really find the solution of uncomfortable coloring,,,
Try to finish this one, and will start doing anatomy studies!! So excited that I found how impoertant of anatomy in this field~
Hi there! This sketchbook is a very good start.
If you want to study anatomy, I suggest starting with Andrew Loomis books (they are available for free on the web). Read what he has to say and re-draw pictures from the book, keeping in mind what you learned from the text. It requires a lot of going back and forth. Draw, read, draw. But it pays off in the end :]
As for life drawing, you can easily set up a still life and draw that Start with simple objects and move to more complex compositions. I can't give you much advice on drawing people from life because I'm too uncomfortable drawing them on the street or wherever x) If you have a big mirror, you can always draw yourself I guess.
It just takes some time Queen, yes copy the drawings in the book and copy them over and over again Add some more contrast to your digital paintings, all the colors have a similar value and saturation. Do some still lifes and try to see whats going on with the colors.
Your doing well keep it up.
Donna-Thank you for your advices on anatomy studies and life drawing. I will check the book on the internet. I hope I can start this part as soon as possible though I am quite busy recently,,,draw, read, draw!!! Thanks again for comming!!
Dy.laneA-Yes, just like what you said there is little saturation and contrast,,, I do need more time to do the investigation on others' art works and still life drawing. Photo drawing might be another issue for me,,,I will keep working on this picture to add more color and contrast as possible. Thanks!
Thanks both of you, really learn some information!!
You are really good.
Add some distraction ...I think I like the original one more~Maybe I will just stop right here for a while...
I might try to tear this one apart into two doodles.
Try to do some proportion investigation. Not sure I am on the right path,,, Busy recently. I will practice as much as possible~
so what next I should do?
A practice this weekend... still not happy with the result.
Dy.laneA-Well, that's what make me feel frustrated on coloring,,,I "don't" work on coloring like painting in gray scale then create another layer, changeing blending mode,,,I do pick colors from color picking panel, but I just don't have courage to choose those high saturated colors,,,My works in between grey scale and colored,,,Just like you said it's quite difficult, still struggling,,,Is there any way to learn about that? I think the only way is learn water color or something like that, maybe after I graduate form university,,,
Thanks for your comments!!
some practice on proportion~It seems that head is still too small in some cases,,,
Hm,,,and some practices on ZBRUSH,,,In our school we have to learn lots of things like interactive devices and CIS,,,so I have to learn MAYA and ZBRUSH by myself~,,,Sorry for low qualities,,,

You're doing a good job, just keep training and everything will be alright =)
My crappy DA - http://kabarsa.deviantart.com/ and sketchbook http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...d.php?t=163478
Hey Queen! Hmmm I think a good way to practice color is to either do quick, really quick color studies from photographs. Don't realyl worry about rendering all that much just make a quick thumbnail of the blocks of color you see.
Another good way is just a simple still life of any old house hold object with a very simple shape and try and copy the colors you see.
Its fustraiting, but that only means your learning!!
kabarsa-Thank you!! Hope these practices paid off some day....
Dy.laneA-Thank you for helpful suggestion, I will try these methods. Hope I can upload some more practice recently,,,quite busy nowadays because I am animation and media design major,,,
Feel better and much comfortable after talking to you guys!
New upload!! Well, I exaggerated some part of the body and the head, changing proportion,,,and I try to use more saturated color and contrast this time.
Wow...so long without any new practice,,, still practocing on color of skin,,,and I don't like this one... I might scan some anatomy practice recenlty,,,
Quite exhausted when I have to learn both 2D and 3D working process in the same time,,,especially there is little help from my school,,, Just try to post a face modeling practice in MAYA and thinkinking about right edge loop for modeling purpose and how to do the texturing process,,,
I try to learn how to use MAYA hypershade, creating normal map from ZBrush and how to do the efficient but qualified rendering,,, Hope you guys could give me some direciton,,, Getting lost so easily as a self-learner,,,
Nice sketchbook, you seem to be tackling a lot of different things at the same time which might be overwhelming, but you seem to be handling it fine. As far as critiques, I think you can improve your values a bit more. Perhaps try painting in greyscale for a bit and tackle colors at a later time?
Keep it up!
Thank you, Cgaddict!! Yes,,,I feel overwhelmed recently because of learning so many things in the same time. I have to,,,it's my grsduation project. Color is really my big problem,,,I try to use those high saturated color but maybe after two hours those colors well be blended or covered by those low value colors,,,I try to do the practices that other people on the upstair suggested but I just don't have enough time,,,
It has been a while,,,there are some practice and assignment for these days.
environment design...really not good at painting environment,,,
try to use more color this days,,,not sure I am on the right path.

Even though I like your painting technique, I would like to see some more of your studies such as those slick-looking figures you did.
