Some of you might have seen an old version of this one on the first page of the thread.
I decided to redo it, with new fangled tricks and techniques. All of my experience from the last 2 years must come in handy, right? Right??

I'm thinking of axing that waterfall, because its kind of a desert planet, so what would be the point of wasting water?
I'm not quite happy with the structures yet, but at least that sick red hue is gone...
what do you think?

I really like your work, it's really well done and easy on the eye.
I always bookmark sketches like these as they're examples of good colour palettes and I really have problems getting my colours down.

I've been too unsatisfied and depressed lately to spend much time on art. The lack of comments doesn't help either.
There's just so many artists on here trying to get noticed, it's hard to build an audience.

Wow! all these environments are epic! I especially love that jungle where you used some actual images for the matte painting.

Pete: The forest picture is not actually a matte painting, I did not use any photos, just some custom brushes, a couple of which were extracted from photos. It's a couple steps removed from the origin.

They make it a chore to post images...
Here's some studies of metal objects and and ice. I kind of suck at using a variety of materials, hopefully I can improve that.

Wow your sketchbook is intense! Dont ever stop!! Your are doing really good. Everything is looking sweet! My only suggestion would be to try drawing those shapes/buildings you did early in sketchup by hand. Like draw some buildings or your own orginal design and them draw them again from a different angle. Repeat this for some vechicles as well kinda of like the student artwork you see coming from Feng Zhu's school. Im sure you can do it, your skill is way up there! Keep going!!

Thanks joe and bbwolf. I've been meaning to draw more architecture, there is some in my paper sketchbook but I haven't shown all of it here.
Have you tried photoshop's 3d tools? I've been experimenting with the 3d in cs4. No doubt there are limitations, but I'll bet someone has figured out how to use it in digital painting. Remember the smudge tool? Custom shapes? A lot of people thought they were useless, myself included, but then somebody showed that was not the case.
One tool is turning greyscale into mesh. Basically extruding white and recessing black to create a three dimensional form.
Works best with smooth gradients:
The mesh will be bumpy no matter how smooth your map.
Here I painted a textured surface with brushes and then converted to a sphere (top right) and plane (bottom right).
The results are...weird. Typically high detail maps will produce something like spiky hair.
One tool that is useful is turning a layer into a 3d postcard which can then be rotated into perspective.
Sphere mesh can be useful with bump/texture applied.
That's what I know so far, I haven't tried cs6 which has some more options.
Here's a small planet made with lunarcell plugin for PS, then painted over with textures.
