I may get in on this if I can find the time.
My first thought was "What if Momma was around when our hero discovered the egg"? It just occurred to me though... if I am making the character Asian shouldn't the dragon be less of a western type? Will have to work that out in future sketches.

nice topic....some very goood WIPs too esp KATANSOUL's
intersting start guys...subscribed
I'm not all that happy with it, but at least it is progressing. She looked too young and like a boy, so I tried to make her more 12-16.
EDIT... I have made a few changes as suggested. Haven't found a way to do the egg yolk yet.
Thought of deleting the original here, but then the comments would make no sense.

DauDau : I like the idea. Have you considered opening the baby dragon's mouth a bit so we can see some little teeth and it's more of an excited expression? Also maybe throw some yolk dripping off the little guy. It doesn't have to be gross and it would go a long way toward making the image more "realistic".
PoshSpice : That floating egg image is really cool. It's a really nice way to show that even an unborn dragon is powerful.
Thank you, jspangler. No, I hadn't thought of it, but I've been so focused on the girl, that the dragon barely got any attention at all.
What you suggest makes a lot of sense. I know I can open the mouth, but the egg yolk will be a challenge. I'll give it a go. Good advice.
whoops - double posted - sorry.
this is the first step of this piece. I am torn between these choices. I am leaning towards A or D on this one. What do u think?
artina : For me it's D. The way she is cradling egg almost like a child is nice. And the surrounding circular lighting already adds some drama.
I have to say that on yours her bottom half looks a little big for her torso and head. You might want to adjust them a bit... maybe drop the upper legs down a bit at the knee to shorten the lower legs?
DauDau... I think maybe the opening of the egg is too "perfect", it might be more effective to have some jagged edges, less of a smooth circle. Like THIS (Warning... disgustingly cute chicken. LOL!)
Artina... I have to say I like A or B. To me they tell a story without having to have anything explained. C is ok, but D... not really sure what is going on. But then its way early in the process...
jspangler... I had the same notion... of the Momma Dragon's reaction.
Shannanigan : That happens to me a lot. I think I have a very original idea and then go back through the threads and see (in this case) that lots of artists have their hero cradling the egg and at least one other (you) had the same idea to have momma dragon pissed off in the background.
Ah well, its bound to happen when you have this many artists covering the same brief.
Version A seems like a rollicking adventure with a heroine full of confidence (however naive) and spunk. Version D looks to be more mystical and moody with a young girl, dare I say, rife with teen angst (I'm no fan of Twilight and am not afraid to state so publicly).
If you're going for moody/mystical/angsty (yeah, it's not a word; whatever) I would say that Version B is the better choice, imho.

Shannanigan, thank you. Yes, you are right. The chicken pic didn't open for me, but I know what you mean and I can google it.
There's so much work still to be done. *wipes imaginary sweat off brow*
Wow, Haiti style. That's cool.
I'm going to go with the "egg thief/pissed mamma" theme, which i know is cliche, but I'm mostly just looking to paint a back lit, subsurface-scattered dragon wing. ...and a veiny testicle-looking egg. Oh well, fun topic by the way.
Hi there This is not actually my entry 4 this chow.. Too silly, so I guess it's just ma way to say "Hello everyone, nice to be here with yall " )) your works great)
i'm doing something contemporary First rough sketch:
The first two things that came to mind after I read the brief. I like them both but the ideas are quite... different from each other.
Hey look it appears to be a blog! oh my
Haven't been around in a while, but I thought I'd post what I have so far for this one.
Pretty excited about this one, never tried drawing children before, and I am not to sure about rock and stone so this should be a good learning experience. Great topic, should be fun.
Sorry I know this is pretty much the same idea that jspangler and gerezon already had.
Poshspice: The floating egg is cool!
artina: I really like B, it looks like she is protecting the egg from something.
Great stuff here already, I am so happy to finaly have time to participate in these. No doubt real life will catch up sooner or later, stupid reality.
This looks like it's going to be a great topic! I already seem some awesome ideas up that I wish I came up with first.
Monika Gruszka: I love the hodge podge outfit and the dumpster/ alley feel! I only think the girl would look more surprised or be leaning for a closer look what with a giant egg hatching right in front of her!
gerezon: You've also got a very contemporary feel. I love the style and so far I like the middle one best.
Ellijah Sakovsky: Hi! Nice to see you here! I haven't browsed CHOW much in the past, so it's good to see a friendly face! Also, nice work. Are you going to keep going with it?
jspangler: LOVE the dragon's face! I would get the hell outta there when that thing came around the corner! Can't wait to see more work with this one.
Orcatraz: I'm looking forward to seeing this one colored too, especially with all the good ideas you have for it. Don't forget to give special attention to the character, too, since this is CHOW an' all!
Josu: That's pretty good without reference. I think doing a young adult book illustration gives a little room to be more playful with the style, so if it doesn't look completely real, at least make it interesting to look at!
gdlr: Wow, love the style and bold green color! She looks like she has a boy's chest, though... or is that just me? (Also, keep the flower!)
artina: I actually like B the best. I think this topic inspires me to think of a more serious/ perilous plot, but A is fun too! D looks a little cliche for a cover, but cliches exist because they work.
Dau Dau: I agree with jspangler's suggestions and you're revision is looking good, but I would open the dragon's mouth even more, really giving it an expression of surprise and excitement, like it's seeing it's mother for the first time.
Viridis: Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!
