ROUND #183:: THE DRAGON'S EGGDESCRIPTION
The Dragon's Egg
This week's brief is a little more vague. The idea is to design a character for a young adult novel, a girl (between the ages of 12 and 16, your choice) who has found a dragon's egg. She will appear on the cover of the novel.
This is the whole brief!
Some things you will want to keep in mind:
- Include the egg please!
- Though the genre is young adult, we haven't outlined anything else : fantasy, sci-fi, historical fiction, magical contemporary, it's up to you
- Remember this is *not* an adult book, so keep that in mind when designing clothing and when using colour!
- Come up with a story for the novel yourself to help your design progress. Is the egg a curse, or a blessing? Is it a burden, or a treasure? Is it something given to the royal heirs, or a special mistake found by a poor vagabond? These are up to you! We hope to be able to read something about your story from your design.
-Remember this is a character design contest, not a cover design contest. You are welcome and encouraged to do it as a book cover, but please keep in mind that all chow rules still apply - including the 3/4ths rule.
Please don't actually write out the story! At least not until after the poll is completed! Let people guess through your work - this way you'll be able to tell if the things you are trying to get across are actually making it!
MONDAY, December 14th , 2009
Deadline is Monday, at 5:00 pm Eastern Standard Time (GMT -5).
FOLLOW THE TOPIC.
POST YOUR FINAL IN THE FINALS THREAD.
SAVE YOUR FILES IN THE FOLLOWING FORMAT. Chow##_Nickname
PLACE THE IMAGE IN A FRAME WITH YOUR NAME/TOPIC
(you can add CA logo, etc).
POST YOUR FINALS IN THE FINALS THREAD!
Remember to include your nickname in the file name.
About quality - as general rule: if your shapes and values are not decent - you are out. Watch proportions, perspective etc. we need perfectly readable shapes and coherent, consistent values.
BE PROFESSIONAL - only finished and good quality entries will be taken to the poll. Daestwen and Poshspice will make the selection.
Please review these helpful reminders if you have not done so already.
ON GETTING TO POLL
NEW ROUND RULE: WIPS PLEASE!
SUBMISSION FORMAT REMINDER
PLEASE REMEMBER TO WRITE YOUR COPYRIGHT INFORMATION UNDER THE IMAGE IN THE FINAL BURNING THREAD SO I DON'T HAVE TO HUNT YOU DOWN LATER!

Okiedokie... I'll be first: WOOO! Once again, you guys deliver on an awesome topic.
I'm not bad, I'm just drawn that way...
second! Yeah sounds pretty cool. Kind of an open round, as long you draw a 12-16 yr old girl and an egg
Random thought here, really - have you noticed how many 16 YO girls look like they`re 25? *head scratch* Must be all that GMO, eh?
Egg, you say...dragon egg...dragon egg...my, what a big omelet that would be! Or a pancake...
Great topic, as usual. If found some free time, definitely will have a go!

**Only A child Doesn't give up!!***
***And there's nowhere to surrender***
One small girl and one gigantic egg coming up!
Oh man, I read so many books on dinosaurs at that age so I can resist joining in the fun this week. Here's my first sketch.
She's a smartie, just don't trust her spelling!

Reeeeally rough idea (i.e still aware of proportion problems), just wanted to get something down before sleep:
Hello Everybody! I haven't been on here in a long time... took a break, ended up forgetting my password... couldn't get confirmation emails... eventually sort of forgot about it until yesterday. LOL!
So my Dragon Egg idea... [censored by daestwen - sshhhh! no telling! read the rules!]
EDIT: Just some minor adjustments... think its now ready to start putting down lines.

@Pxelslayer: Cool idea and nice colours so far! Almost like something lives inside the egg. She needs feet.
@DIMAGYAN: I like the egg design and her expression. Wanna see colours!
@Your style is very cartoonish, I like that. Nice idea to draw her as an engeneering freak.
@Matt_B: Woah, the egg is huge! XD
@LaurenHeroOfTime: For your first time, I think it looks really good! You will get used to the tablet soon. I am interested in how this will develop.
@shannanigan: Arg, I would have loved to know your story... She looks like she was stealing the egg to me.
@JanJager: I like her gesture, is she protecting the egg?
@DauDau: How cute!
@Venger: Cool start! I looove her dog!
@Formic_Acid: Aww, sheīs playing the guittar! Thatīs a wonderful idea!
Thatīs how far I am by now. I hope the colours will work later on...
Ah, awesome! There are so few CHOW events focusing on my area of illustration (children's book/young adult) so this is extra cool as a potential portfolio piece. ^^
I'll have to work on some sketches later today...
