Hello, my names Joe Shaw and I'm 15 years old (2009). Originally I started posting drawings and sketches for fun, but I have since started trying to make a lot of serious improvements to my work and hone my skills to a level which will hopefully land me a job in the games and/or film industry as a Concept artist or Illustrator. That is my long term goal. All comment and crit welcome, I am here to improve.

Some sketch i scanned into photoshop
Sweet looking dragons! The bodies seem a little stiff though, maybe make the limbs a little more fluid? Not as boxy. Don't know if that makes sense but there it is . Cool armor concepts too, very lively, keep at it.
A few sketches from this weekend, gonna photoshop the bottom one
Couple of drawings from today. For the one below I held a pencil in my left hand and copied it.. kinda hard to keep it still though hehe.
A digital i did at school when i was bored, i think it looks alright, a bit rough though and I did use some curves for the brightness on the lava flow (cheating? ).
Anyways would really love any advice on digital painting
blahh , some hand studies and a monk, my scanner leaves these stupid lines
wow, your only 15 and your this good at drawing, all im gonna say is, keep it up mate! in a few years who knows where your work is going to lead you =D
you just got ramzo'd
check out my stuff! http://www.ramz0.deviantart.com
You should wait before using colour.
Grow further with your line drawings before even concidering using colour.
Sketch sketch sketch.
Damn you suck (lol not in a bad way) I mean cause your so good so young i'm 18 and you like 2x better then me give or take a couple times . Keep it up
Ramz0 - thanks I checked out your DA gallery, I recognise the robot silohouettes!
Gasmaskoo - yeah, maybe your right, Ive been working on this monk painting for a while though, gonna get that done. Im tempted to upload it, but its not finished!
SPiderlok33 - Thanks man, your drawings arnt that bad just do more and more!
Anyway here is some more dynamical anatomy stuffs, the first one was made up but i referenced the others from posemaniacs.com, good site. And the last one is a sea creature thing that I just kinda got bored of. (is that normal?, just going off your work? )
Here's some sketches and the final for this monk i've been doing. Spent a while on it and learnt a dam lot doing it! hope you like it
Sketches here, sketches there.
eugh, her right arm is too long
Last edited by JoeS; December 31st, 2009 at 09:37 AM. Reason: arm!
These sketches look very nice, one thing I would advise would be to make them abit more dynamic, I couldn't help but notice how very little movement there was, some of the body parts dont really correspond with the movements of the larger, parenting body parts, but other than that, I think that you are excellent, I started on this site whenever I turned 15 which was around last year and I have to say that you are doing a hell of alot better job than I did, keep posting
Thanks Panda yeah, i've been practising a lot more dynamic positions but they are pretty hard, I find the anatomy can go out of proportion a lot easier than if they were just static. But i'll keep doing more
Anyways heres a quickie XD
Heres a WIP from today inspired from the cover of digital art masters 4 and also just playing around with some new custom brushes, I think im just gonna leave it at this though. Uploading more anatomy stuff soon and im gonna go back to some basics with digital painting, I've just kinda dived in ; gotta "paint the apple" hehe
These are some anatomy studies from last night. The first two are referenced from a book "anatomy for the fanatasy artist" and the archer is straight from mind
in regards to your last post, I must laugh, because I recently bought the same book, and I went to look for the poses you based these on... XD
your human anatomy is already far better than mine, (Ib being the same age as yourself), but your creature and armor design seems to be lacking in the detail department... don't be afraid to experement with unconventional designs, heavy shading, and and add in little bits of veins, spikes, ad perhaps natural armor plating to your dragon designs... they look abit dull otherwise... the same goes for the armor!
alright, now that I have posted my useless bit of advice, carry on and have fun!
I like your work and you are going the right direction when it comes to proportions. My only qualm is that your bodies look stiff to me. But,then again, this is coming from a guy who draw cartoons a lot so I could be wrong.
Joe, i see a lot of wonderful things happing here, your on the right tract, draw, draw, draw!
Masta Fran - Thanks , yeh I agree some do look stiff I cant always help it , I should do some more gesture drawing
mike butkus - Whoa thanks man, encouraging comment
Here is a bit of work from school, my chosen topic for this coursework was 'Subterranean' which is basically underground. This is just some work from my sketchbook
A watercolor portrait of myself from a school photo I did last week. Looks a little off though, and some other stuff - my cat from earlier and some anatomy, observational and from mind
men with big ass swords n' stuff.... yeh, I like that
nice sketch book coming on, can see some improvment along the way.
I like seeing the pratice pieces, the facial proportions need a little work and positioning of features on the heads that are slightly turned.
I found a few books on how to draw cartoons the most helpful, they broke the head down to basic shapes and where to put guidelines etc so the face doesn't look distorted.
Look forward to see more stuff, it just keeps getting better.
Disclaimer: I'm a noob myself so advice to be taken at own risk
Some hand sketches from loomis and some from mind below. I used a warm brown overlay over the base colours because I thought the colours I chose were a little too cool. They look plastic though lol
an Andrew Jones inspired robot thingeh. I made it with a a few custom brushes, one of which was the band Pendulum's emblem.
And some warrior geezer drawn on photoshop
