htkpeh - thanks man! that's a huge compliment... I'm blushing. I'm just an obsessed hobbyist with hopes of making it my livelihood... still a long ways off, I think.
Welp, I haven't had a ton of time lately unfortunately, so this is a WIP based on a photo by a fellow named Lee Jeffries. I couldn't resist the urge to try to re-render this as the photograph is stunning. I'm not sure I can do it justice, but it's been fun to try.

yogeshj25 - Thanks! Yes, I do need to stop being such a wuss and start using harder brushes. It's mostly a confidence thing.
Nishan K - he's supposed to be squinting, but I think I'm failing at getting that across and it makes the proportions look wacky... ah well. I may drop this one and move on. Thanks for the compliments and critique!
So the old man painting is probably doneski, but here is one last update before I put his old ass in the ground, so to speak.
I got frustrated and decided I'd paint.. a zombie. I am kind of enjoying the contrasty stuff... probably gonna roll with it for a little while.

You should start to think more about your brushstrokes because I think you're doing the soft brush thing because you aren't completely sure where it's going so you do everything extremely slow and soft to find out where to go next.
Everyone has different approaches but my suggestion would be to map things out instead of doing this. Then you can put down more confident strokes and then smooth out the strokes you want to be really soft. This way things won't look blurry either.
You need to take into consideration where the planes are of each object and follow them by your brushstroke and define the form that way.
Your palette is really good on the skull though.

Loathsome - you're exactly right - it's a confidence issue. I'm just not visualizing it like I should be. Most of that is lack of structured practice, I think, but I'm working on that. At any rate, thanks for the compliments and I have taken your advice to heart.
