I'm still noodling around with the foreground elements, partially because I don't know what to do with the background elements. I have the 3 cat-guys in the background, but I don't know what to do with the terrain. It's supposed to be in a forest clearing and I don't really want to muck things up with a lot of actual trees. Should I avoid doing detail work in the background during inking and do more subtle stuff with coloring, or do you think I can add some detail in the background without making stuff too busy? If so, any suggestions on what to do back there?
Any help is appreciated.

Thanks for the idea. I do think I'll have to take the graphic approach to ensure clarity....now to figure out how to do the graphic background....and then on to color!
A little update of the background, showing the graphic style I'm going for.
Midground is now troubling me....if it's not one thing, it's another.
