I was just about to start this painting from an idea I had, tho I really need help with composition....so any c&cs would be much appreciated--thanks!
Idea: A chance encounter--a female centaur is stopping for a drink when she meets a mermaid. They're interested and intrigued by one another.
Setting: A riverside in the woods. Soft lighting.
So far, I've just been looking at the placement of the characters.
I like the positions, but I think maybe the mermaid could be further down in the water. There needs to be more space between them for the composition. in the background you could do some beautiful mountains with castel ruins and maybe some little fantasy type creatures on the bank of the river. Or maybe just soft green trees with centaurs on the bank? Make sure to use yellows and soft greens .
Thanks Nisshoku! I hadn't heard any comments so I was just mocking up a background to help clarify the idea.
There'll be reflections of all the trees and brush in the water...just hadn't gotten to it yet. wdyt? I was thinking to have some see through/lightly visible start of a tail on the mermaid with possibly a bit of tail fin poking up behind her, that's why she's over a bit from the right...do you think they're still too close?
The mermaid looks like she's standing in the water, i.e. as though there's something solid under her torso to keep her that far out of it. Treading water is hard work, harder in proportion to how much of yourself you have to keep above the water.
My suggestion would be to either show that her tail is folded under her (which might be awkward) or to bring her down so that she's submerged up to her armpits.
I still think she should be brought down, as ataxas said, but also...Make the centaur in deeper water. When she is so shallow, how could the mermaid be swimming? Love the how the bg is coming along, for sure, and the idea of a tail under the water, but visible, is what I like the most .
