Do some homework on composition - that'll help a lot.
Are you familiar with Juxtapoz? There are some great artists in there with stuff that seems to be the flavor you're looking for.
Learn anatomy. Knowing organic shapes will help you create interesting pieces.
Start shading. Shade something and post it for critique. We'll help you get it right.
Take pictures of local graffiti, or Google a graffiti website. There are tons out there filled to the brim with great work you can reference from.
i would say for grafiti, avoid thin lines and realy fine detail. you can oftern get across the theme or message of your piece by simply sujesting the texture (for the scales just do a couple of groups of larger scales) or shape n that you want. it is much easier to do mockups if you use thick lines and block colours. the best way to do this is with a program like photoshop, art rage ect, or you can use something as simple as a graphite or conte stick, and some fat nib marker pens.
