thanks guys--i appreciate the support. i'm not ready to talk about it right now, but it feels very comforting to know you guys care
snootchy, the third one works best but her anatomy is really wonky. her upper half isn't overlapping her pelvis correctly and the leg was looking a little funky so i just rotated it a bit. be careful of her crotch being too low--you have her crotch meeting with her legs directly--the female crotch goes higher than the legs by a lil bit. i think maybe a cheerleading or gymnastics ref will help to show you what i mean. (i tried to draw an outline for you)--the crotch is higher and will overlap with the leg that is extending behind her.
anyway--i think you should keep to that composition.
spect, i love how it's coming along--it's a big improvement and looking really good so far. i can see you like her hair buns--but i think you can play around with her hair more to come up with some sort of gear/attire that keeps her hair buns---but protects her or keeps her head warm. other than that it's a great design--you might want to do some more drafts for her weapon tho because it's looking a bit sci-fi ish. i think just simplifying some aspects of it will help with this.
matt: looking good, just watch for your anatomy sometimes--it's getting lost under the clothes and they are looking a bit thin and rectangular. thanks for the refs too they are really helpful

thanks hala for the po it makes a lot more sense based off yer po, yea i know it's super wonky and i just gave up on it, the pose i was trying to go for was one that's always been in my mind, the cloud pose from ff7 where he's holding out the buster sword that's coming towards the viewer's eye, thanks again for the po but just gonna start it over not really crazy about the character
Matt that's looking really great, i like the sharp shapes that help distinguish between the dark and good! I think there could be more form of the leg that's coming forward with the drapery draping over let's say the knee cap to give the figure some more form, great update!!

My idea for the colour/mood.
Edit: HELP! dose anyone know why the colours are saving differently form photoshop? When I was painting this in ph, the colours where a darker purple... and not the blue that's here. I don't think I've changed any setting, and it's in RGB mode... Anything like this happend to you?

mike: i like it so far--but i'm really not seeing the chess piece come through enough if you know what i mean.
matt: Adobe has a significantly different color profile than most PC's and web browsers. Especially anything along the red spectrum comes out different. i don't know how to fix this though : ( i have this problem all the time. i sort of just give up trying to fix it ;p

edit: i just realized i painted over her fingers shiizzz son.
fixed her hands a bit and some of the colors.
though it seems like the colors are over saturated and the details of the render get lost (not totally done with the render, just needed to get away from b/w for a while ;p)
any ideas/thoughts on colors plz?
edit: i didn't notice the oversaturated blue till i posted it here *face palm* ><

I've just got to tidy up some bits (snow etc) and this ones nearly done.
And this is my idea for the colour for the good bishop, ice inspired. And the last image was my reff for the ice... kinda got carried away with it! Oh and that ice wall pic.. is in fact a painting!! And not even a digital one!
Or do you think its a little to strong a colour scheme for what we're doing?

i was thinking for our evil royalty, they could be wearing the traditional headwear--the fabric+ crown ordeal. just google medieval crown/headdress/ etc. ya? and maybe less fur, and more layers of leather and fabric hm?

altered some of the colors
70% done now.
just need to fix up some skin tone, tone down the blues a lil,and refine the texture and edges.
i messed around with teh snow a bit..i made a couple diff version but they all seemed to be overkill and looked "shooped"
so what do you think about this?

might put this one down for a while and work on the evil version now.

Granny: I really dig the overall composition and the lighting, plus the dino looks freaking ace! I know where you're trying to go with the blurred out spots where you want to draw the eye to certain areas but I think it's looks a bit too purposefully done; not saying that u used a blur filter, but i think it doesn't make sense where half the dino's front teeth are blurry compared to the backrow, i'm not sure if u were planning on sharpening the front row of teeth up but, if anything the front which is closest to the viewer would be the sharpest and the back row or furthest teeth would be less sharp to increaste the depth of field. I really like the design of the overall armor, and like the little intricate details you have made on the armor; i think a bit more polish will help to indicate a more finished look!
JailHouseRock2: Ooh I diggz the color palette and there is a nice play on cool to warm contrast! I think the overall scene looks great, only thing is that the snow seems a bit flat overall, like variations in snow size as well as the direction of the wind and gusts of snow that go in the direction of the wind like for instance where the kings cape is flowing maybe also a gust of snow trail is flowing off into the distance, i think a few things like this will help to create more depth in the image; also there could a bit more details, like scratches or tiny textures added to the outfit design to make feel a bit more worn and add character to em; overall i think the comp is great just a few things could be worked on to push to a final piece!
hala: wowza, i really digg the queeny piece and the whole atmosphere created is really well done! The fur is excellent and is the first thing that pops out at me, I think the forms could be further rendered as they looks to soft and lack of some structure; like in the face it seems to be to blurry, not sure if that was going to be worked on but i think the rendering on the forms of the face could be worked on a bit further. also the hand that's upside down looks a bit funny to me the way it's positioned, like it's resting the staff on the wrist or something and i'm not sure if that's what ur going for but just looks a bit wonky; i think further plane definitions in the hand will help, looks a bit too soft like the face and u can always blur or like soften certain edges to depict the snow swaying across after defining the forms; i also really enjoyed your composition and luv the design of the dress, just a few fixes and i think it'll be fantastic!
I hear ya and i plan on adding elements like a signia on the armor and the orb to be a glowing rook piece, but i thought that the main selling point for me was that my enviro is the tower and she is a defender of it; besides the rook piece i think compared to other pieces on a chess set is a bit blatant in terms (and i'm not downplaying anyone else's pieces at all so please dun misunderstand me) what it is but a rook is castle, representing defense; if you have any other suggestions then what i planned to do then i'm totally open to ideas.but i'm really not seeing the chess piece come through enough if you know what i mean.

Hala - Dude your character turned out AMAZING! The colors are so subtle and delicate, shows alot of care went into making her. Really digging the design.
Granny - HAH! Knights riding dinosaurs, and chicks with antler helmets riding gorillas..your ideas are always tops man!
JailHouse - Awesome style you've got there, it has a touch of Mignola which steals my heart. Great jobs with the color palette too, I can feel the frostbite...brrr.
Snootchy - Loved the bat-girl character. Your pieces have a real surreal almost dream like quality that I find quite cool. Keep it up!

We need a weeks time to really polish up the way we are presenting them.
Doing things last minute is NOT WORTH IT. get it done on time, and right. otherwise you will be wasting your own time as well as everyone else's. yeah that's harsh but it's the truth. If you rush things--it's apparent.
Please manage your time efficiently to get these done. we're doing great so far but I see us coming to a halt and I don't like that.
I will be gone tomorrow, and this week will be hell (edit: hell as in--i won't be able to talk to you guys much) for me as noted on our team calendar because I gotta move in and prepare for uni. i expect you all to be working hard. Yeah i understand we get busy with life. But we all knew that going into the competition.
If you're behind--sacrifice just one hour of something to work on your piece. whether that's sleep, a tv show, chop some time off ur shower, or get up earlier.
JUST DO IT.

Matt & Granny: looks great and coming along really well, keep plugging away, last week for us all to polish up we got and bring it all together!
Oh also after reading the requirements and dae's response to twitchfinger, looks like they gonna be pretty strict about 2:3 aspect ratio just like that of zhang lu's demo pic posted in the sign up thread. So good idea fer us all to copy his image and make sure our images fit that format.

Sorry been a bit busy this weekend, and still burnt out from work, but here's a sketch for the bad alliance, spent about 3hrs on the sketch after watching jchan's villian demonstration as he was stating how it important it is to get things worked out before rendering and I've fell into that trap on the first one, so hopefully this one will go much faster. I decided to switch up the first one to the good alliance since the colors and face and pose look a bit too graceful. Also if i do have time I might integrate an idea i had to incorporate rook piece a bit better.
The enviro is the final i plan to go with, also gonna break up the hard edges and texture it better.
