I've been member of this forum for a while but I haven't posted much.
I need an advice: I should paint a scene that include 9 figures and which take place in a kind of vault/ cellar of a castle. This is a simple sketch done in ink (and enhanced a bit in PS), that I've done on the basis of guidelines that I received from my friend (this is non-commercial project).
The scene should be done in oils (I'll probably touch it up in PS later).
I can do that correctly from imagination, but I'd like it to be better than just "correct".
Therefore, I thought to do a rendering of the scene in some 3D application and then play with light and colors a bit. The only lighting is that big light beam which flows from ceiling to floor well.
To cut a long story short: I don't have any experience with 3D applications. So, can somebody recommend a 3D modeling software (or just a bare bone version of it) that is intuitive and simple enough for a beginner to render a scene like this in a reasonable amount of time, without having to browse through 1000+ page manual?
I am aware that I am probably asking for impossible, because 3D software is always very dense, but maybe...

Everybody have their favorite, Cinema 4d does the job for me.
Sometimes I don't use 3d for for a month or so and I don't fiddle around too much when I get back to it.
Apart from the standard 30 days full demo, there's an unlimited demo with no save, so you have time to learn and check things out.
Any 3d package will do. What you're looking to do is just a bunch of cylinders, and should be fairly easy after a tiny bit of tinkering in any 3d app. Blender is free, personally i use max.
If you wanna model the people as well, then you'll have a harder time. But i think you could get the job done with just cylinders representing people, or placing out a bunch of bipeds.
Sketchup is good for what you want. If you want to really go wild and don't mind watermarks or a daunting program to try and learn Maya's PLE is free.
Sketchup will not be a simple solution for this, as it does not have a rendering engine built in. Give ( blender ) a try, it should be able to do everything you want. There are a lot of tutorials online covering the basics of the program, which could be helpful. Keep in mind that unless you want to get into global illumination rendering, the single shaft of light will not be adequate, you will have to set up extra lights to simulate the diffusion of light. Thanks. I'll try both Sketchup and Blender. I am actuall interested in diffusion of light over the interior, particularly on the hooded figures. I'd like to play with different colors of light.
I've become a huge fan of modo - which works absolutely wonderful for anything except animation. Has a powerful and superfast renderer, besides which modelling and texturing is a walk in the park. Check it out, it's fairly powerful and more than enough for what you require.
Eventually I gave up learning the software tricks and chose to do it old fashioned way. Here's the outcome (it's done in oils on panel).
Begin with Modo, it's easy and powerful .. after understanding basics and workflow, you can shift to Maya and explore more !!
Zbrush is extension, you can't use it as high-end 3D studio...
I use Maya, Modo and Zbrush...
