This is a painting in acrylics I just finished. It is one of many pictures that will make up a story when completed. This one is meant to be exploring the environment a little, while showing the arrival of some new creatures.
This is probably the first time I've ever seriously done a landscape kind of picture and taken things like lighting and shadow into account, so any critiques in that area would be greatly appreciated!
I don't think you'd see clouds reflected in the distant waters of the horizon like that. Suggest finding reference images for that area, i.e. the horizon, and thinking about the atmospheric effects. The rafts all look to big, meanwhile. The ones on the very horizon would appear no more than dots.
The blades of grass also look much to big on top of the distant cliffs, presuming these are meant to be big cliffs with big trees... The trees seem to support clumps of turf rather than branches and leaves, so the treetops look more grassy than the grass. I like the beastie.
Nice color. with the grass.
You could add some more effects to the water. Bodies of water tends to be more reflective into the distance and the far distance could have some atmospheric particle's diffusing it with the color of the sky. The darkening of the color in the distance could mean alot of things but since it's a sunny clear day you have painted, it's percieved as being able to gaze into the water.
Here is a ref that almost match the enviro you are creating
Here is another but notice that the lighting conditions have changed and also the texture or tirbulance of the water in general.
Study a ref image of the ocean to get the simple basics. You don't need to add much detail like each and every wave etc... It's important that you create some consistancy, kinda making the rest of the image appear in harmony with the grass and trees that looks pretty decent. I would go for a softening effect over the ocean as to fit in with that fantastical creature on the tree, maybe sharing the experience with it staring ito the vastness over the ocean.

Dashinvaine and Zaorr, thank you very much for the critiques they were both really helpful! I'll try and redo some of the areas you've pointed out, but as it's not a digital painting what I can redo is kind of limited. However I will be painting a similar scene to this one again so I'll keep all of what you said in mind. Thank you again!!
