My own personal favourites are;
Carlos Mencia (I may disagree with some of his rantings, but I'd rather take him over the Daily Show).

Everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die
Bill Hicks is a ridiculously underrated comedian, IMO. George Carlin was also really funny.
David Cross is almost always reliably funny. I loved him in Mr. Show and Arrested Development, and he's very good at stand up.
Probably one of my personal favorite comedians in modern times is Patton Oswalt. Just listen to his LP Werewolves and Lollipops. It's genius.
Stephen Colbert isn't technically stand-up, but he did do the White House Press Dinner....and destroy everyone there verbally.
Going old school here:
Richard Prior (legend)
Also worthy of a special mention:
Eddie Murphy (back in the '80s)
Love Dylan Moran and Bill Bailey.
Tim Minchin is great, though not realy stand-up.
I agree that Bill Bailey is rather amusing. Haven't really seen enough of Dylan Moran to form an opinion as yet...
Stewart Lee takes pops at Comedy;
Bill Hicks is the correct answer.
Mitch Hedberg was awesome, I loved him (too bad he's gone).
Carlin was kick ass too, not so funny anymore, his old stuff was great though.
Richard Pryor, also badass.
Demitri Martin <--- I really like his style
Lewis Black <--- WOOT
More Bill Bailey;
