Great work everyone.......I'll try to make some comments later.....
Wel....I usually draw characters on CHOW.....so this is really new for me.........I don't know how I'm going to do it but I'll try.....
For now.....I see a lot of anatomy issues.....but it's really difficult to fix it....But as I said.....I'll keep trying...
Critics and comments are really welcomed!!
a note about the quality checking for finals...
COW is a weekly exercise and I really expect participants who want to see themselves in the polls to make an effort to make finished, quality work to the best of their ability. Quality work takes time.
I hate singling people out, but I also decided I didn't want to just cut folks in the final hour with no warning either. So I would really like to see Mr. Whitmann and TMG work some more on their entries. Both have strong things going for them as a beginning, but seem rather rushed in execution.
Again, this is not said to be mean or hurtful; my criticism here will always be constructive and respectful. But COW is an important activity on CA where a lot of professionals first cut their chops at the beginning of their careers. COW is an excellent place to hone one's skills, but that only happens if people put their best effort into it.
Here is a value and color try for my beast. I'm not sure if I want it to sit back
in the mist or pop.
Thanks for the feedbacks...This is too damn fun to quit...I think Im going to go with this version...my first attempt was too "inside the box"...what do you guys think?

Fuck John, that's one beautifull Wyrmcrow you got there!
It was looking a little too squishy for a colossus, so I decided to push a bit more of the roach surface detail to give it some density

Vegas-Mike: I like both, but the new one reminds me of this Malebolgia (Spawn) action figure I have. Not precisely so, but it has some of the qualities.
Here is a new value sketch, the color confused me. this has more pop!
Every work is cool! I'm so sorry for having no time for this round.
VEGAS MIKE - I like this, It looked massive dangerous
MICHAEL MORISSE - I love your back bone & flame.
SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH,BUT IT'LL BE BETTER!
Update, stupid pc hung up and I had to redo everything, hope I'm not too late to be able to finish.
Marco Mazzoni Awesome feel to that behemoth man, I hate roaches but lovin' yours!
VegasMike very cool monster! very mean to say the least Can't wait for colors!

One's humble Sketchbook
it's really fun with wacom....
Long time since I posted... Here's mine. I'll post it in the finals shortly, along with a description.
Damn Xgabo very very nice, Blew me away! ( but way to human i think for COW???)
Michael morisse great stuff, really huge scale

Penumbra: PLEASE say you'll post for the poll. Don't tease like that. I don't fully understand what is going on with its anatomy, but I don't think I should either. It's gorgeous and hellish and colossal and it belongs in the poll for sure...
xgabo: Humanoidish? Yep. Will I pull it? Nope. As long as something is not overtly humanoid and characterish, quality trumps skirting the humanoid rule. It's in.
joey-b: Nice! The color is understated, attractive and believeable.
Earlier in the week I mentioned going through and making comments on all the entries, but as it has worked out, I've been making them in dribs and drabs here and there all week. If I have missed anyone or if anyone wants a comment from me that didn't get one, shout it out now. One of the things I want to do as the new mod is to make sure the new folks are getting a little attention too. It's hard to learn something new when you feel like you're shouting in a vacuum.
Again, for everyone: the plan is to set up the new poll Sunday morningish. Will play it by ear if I notice a last minute deluge of entries.

Bralt Hannicart - Thanks for the tip... I worked on reducing my creature's eye. Your creature is truly twisted, nice job!
grey - I really like your stylization and use of color. The only thing that confuses me though, is the fire in the middle of his face. I can't read if his nose is just on fire, or if there's an open cavity and the fire is shining out.
John Bridges - Nice! I love your painterly rendering... not sure I buy that those chains could even slow him down.
Benu - Terrific! It looks like an ancient illumination.
Penumbra - Great use of texture!
xgabo - Great concept... that guy really reads as "colossus"!
Here's where I'm at... didn't get to work on it last night, and will definitely not be able to do any more tomorrow... this might very well be as finished as she gets. (At least before poll cutoff)
Michael Jaecks, i didn't know it couldn't be humanoid. I'm new to this weekly stuff. Sorry for any missunderstandings. :/
Hopfully mine is not to humanoid, i inspired myself on a demon, godzilla like creature.
You can view my finished version in the final thread.
One's humble Sketchbook
Michael Morisse: loving yours.....one of my favorites so far....
Marco Mazzoni : really great concept.....it's disgusting ....in a good way though....
benu: Awesome concept..........your creature is amazing....but what I like the most is the colors and mood you gave to this piece....
And here is my wip.........still a lot of things to do.........I don't know if I'm going to finish it.......some critics please.......:]
Starting to add color, still needs more clean up and detailing.
Here is a color study direction. I am not crazy about it, color sometimes gives me trouble.
Penumbra : Nice ! would love to see it finished. wonderful textures.
danielblanco : good start, try to ad some darker values, it is a little flat.
try image> value/contrast to start.
Peanut : nice beasty.
CCthrom : love it,Funny AND dangerous.
Marco Mazzoni :love it! great color and painterly look.
john Bridges : love it to, great color and you made it look effortless.
blobs : great lighting, and volume.
Wacky Wackowski : A really great piece, both quiet and frightening.
xgabo hot damn I think you just stole the thread
michael morisse I love the spinal columns on those beasties, I think the values do get a little cluttered in the color version, it's clearer to me in your first value/color sketch, if that's any help
ccthrom thanks, it's just meant to be an angry molten core, could be an eye or nose or anything really
Who you gonna believe, me or your lyin' eyes? - Chico Marx
I listened To GRAY and I think this is better
The entries look great so far. Great work everyone. I won't be able to finish my entry so It'll just be the start of my first CA sketch book. I'm still getting the hang of what's what's and where everything is but the COW forum I'll definitely follow and attempt to join In. I'll be sure to vote on this one though, best of luck to you all.
I'm not sure of the policy on critiques/ comments but I went back and did a few, apologies to anyone i have missed and to those who didn't want a critique/comment (just ignore it).
Michael Morisee - Pretty sweet, looks like a massive fire Aardvark.
Peanut Brittle - Really nice and it really feels massive.
daielablanco - Looks like it will turn out well with some work, It feels like it needs to be grounded, like it's not quite apart of your scene, also maybe research some anatomy as well too really define this creature, I suggest canine anatomy. Also many a little darker of a scene over all.
CCThrom - It's like a mean green hell machine, Interesting colors.
I am Joey-b - Looks pretty cool so far, I like the rider ( I didn't see anyone else go that way ), but yeah it's a good idea, Maybe some clean up and some different textures, not so much a scalier look but maybe a burnt/torn skin.
xgabo - That's a large creature for sure, looks good though, really the only things that stick out are the perspective of the creature and the land underneath (not sure if anyone pointed that out), also maybe making the background a little darker so the creature doesn't blend so much, although hazing the creature with smoke could give it a ominous look to it, just some mystery.
funghi from yuggoth - Neat, maybe some more details on the creature and some more background. Have fun with that wacom.
Penumbra - Large Image for sure, having a hard time making out what's what's what though, looks almost like a sliver creature from MTG.
Wixxi - I dig the step by step, very cool looks like it'll turn out well, maybe some fire breathe?
Wacky Wackowski - That's definitely different, looking good though.
Benu - Pretty insane looking creature, all i can say is those people are screwed for sure.
dwindotp - Oh looks like a beetle, or a giant brain, cool.
Marco Mazzoni - Yeah that's demonic for sure, the roach look would gross people people out for sure.
VegasMike - Awesome pose on that and it's real mean looking. Background in mind?
John Bridges - Nice mix of creatures, definitely unique, I'm not entirely sure that little chain would hold that beast though. Also not sure if anyone noticed and it mite just be me but the lightning bolt and his beak seem it intersect almost feels like it's beak is broken and just ''there'', mite just be what you're going for just thought I'd throw that out.
realitychek - Late is better then never, looks like you have a mix of ideas goin there, suggest maybe defining/rendering it a bit more.
Hexism - Not diggin' the background color myself, the pose seems a bit off maybe his back foot is to close to his body, feels stiff.
destinyapocalypse - Yeah definitely full body on that, looks like It would turn out pretty cool. I wouldn't worry about your English, let your work do the talkin'. Best of luck.
grey - Nice action you got goin' on there, little darker though, people are Innately scared of the dark and the things that could be in the dark, especially large aggressive hell beasts.
blobs - Pretty massive, just maybe not to mean looking, I like the landscape, like to maybe see some magma or fire though.
Darkwolf - Keep it up, looks like It''s comein' along, add a background of sorts (suggest some sort of mountains, smaller the better for scale, maybe also since hes laying down maybe In a valley of sorts), refine some of the detail and colors. Maybe some action or a pose, but like I suggested you can do things with what you have now. Best of luck.
Lanista - It's a competition and It's also NOT one at the same time. Try to think of It in terms of direction, these challenges give direction into what it's like to work for real, using timeliness, guidelines and having competition, this also provides a place to hone those skills you've learned and also learn more skills from other artist and gives us a chance to give back to the art community. also people have different ways of doing things of course and not everyone likes everything complex, simple, or using different media, but having access to these differences Is what it's about, some day no doubt on here you'll be inspired by something you mite not have liked months before. So take the good with the bad, and try to remember its not that serious, If art ever looses It's fun It then becomes work and we all know what we say about work. Best of luck and hope to see your work in later threads.
Well that's about it. Good luck.

VegasMike: I'm really looking forward to seeing that finished, like Izer I'm curious as to what kind of background your going to use.
Michael Morrise: I do think the value changed was an improvement, I think the streaks of lava in the foreground though look a bit too cool now. Re adding a few subtle highlights to that area might address that without being overwhelming.
Benu: I think you had a good composition going with the darks around the edges, I like the detail you've added but fading some of it towards black, particularly in the bottom left corner might make the creature pop out a bit more.
Almost finished, with my own work.
Hell! This round is certainly happening!
Penumbra: That's a piece of art!
Xgabo: Love those horns and the "face".
Joey-B: I'm glad you fired that first engineer. The new one knows his trade.
Peanut: You're scaring me...
Wacky: Seems like you have a link with the outer planes... I like it!
benu: That face is so frightening.
dwinbotp: Nice final!
Hey thanks Cloister!
MJ- i think its kinda weird when u do good art u can just ignore the brief of species and humanoid.. i tried my very best not to make it humanoid and to not add to much stuff that would make this a character.. but i guess i just need to improve my skills.
