Hello CA !
Starting 2014 I am taking a deeper approach to art. Will keep track of the progress here.
Here is where I am at now. I think I am closer to illustration than traditional art due to influence by games. I am trying though to go more in the direction of traditional and fine art, at least till I find my niche.
What do you guys think, should you stop exploring when you found your art domain ? Is it healthy to search for it or does it come naturally.. ?
Comments&Critiques are very much appreciated.
Though it looks kind of cool, it took me about 5 days to finish it

Hey! welcome to the forums!
I can tell from your traditional stuff youŽre already pretty good with value and form, Just keep pushing stuff out and definitely keep up those studies!
thank you for dropping by ! Yes, I think I should start doing studies more intensively.
A WIP that I don't think I will finish, just wanted to exercise some digital painting. I think I am getting better at mixing colors, but I still don't get it how can I make a piece stand out.. The face just seems to be so plain..
Inspired by MindCandyMan's first drawings I decided to try out my own self portrait. The eyes and mouth came out better than my last tries, still something seems not quite right..
thanks for dropping by my sketchbook
The last portrait looks pretty good. (maybe watch out for some proportion issues) You can first take a picture of yourself. Put it away. Do the self portrait and then lay the picture next to it to check for mistakes. And about the goat/sheep painting not standing out enough: try adding more color variation instead of just one color, and again, check for proportions, the eyes were a bit off Just do a lot more studies and youŽll get better and better at seeing color and values, iŽm still a big noob in this so I canŽt give you too many advice... just keep up the good work and your pieces will stand out in no time!
Thanks stinkypanda for the elaborate response. I think you are right, color variation is really what is lacking.. and yes, the idea with the photo seems good, because I do not want to start making the portrait directly from the photo.
This weekend I had more time to do something creative, besides studies, so I started to experiment with Acrylic paint on canvas. This is a minimalist interpretation of Impression, sunrise
Did some concept profiles after Riven Phoenixes lessons. Pretty fun.
Thanks for your comment.
For moving towards fine art and finding your own style, I think i found a great video about learning from the masters. Its the first edition of a guys online art course and takes you through practices for learning from old master paitnings. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQfF-P70V2Q
For your face drawings, you proportions are off as the eyes sit in the middle of the face not 2/3 up. What I found simple and useful at least was the you tube videos of ProkoTV, who covers simple anatomy of each facial feature followed by a video of how to draw the same parts. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1EPNYWeEf1U
A creation while studying the anatomy.
I still have problems with contrast, but I am happy with the progress.
I gave the self portrait another try, pretty pleased with the results, though it is a "damaged" portrait this time, due to the sentimental issues and stuff..
I discovered that adding a point-texture to the value, adds a bit to the realism.
Some new digital works.
First is a quick sketch on the theme "Island Castle" for Spitpaint group
second is a WIP on forest/elfish theme. Hope I have some time these days to bring it to the end.
Great start! I'm definitely going to watch the videos by Riven Phoenix, so thanks for mentioning him, lol. I'd say to use some reference in your work, and if something doesn't work in your drawing/painting? Just do it again. Happy drawing!
Trying to draw every day since Feb 26th 2014.
Crits are always more than welcome!

hehe, thanks for the advice, I could definitely use some optimistic words. Good luck to you too
