Nice start to your sketchbook with the self portrait. I see we are on the same basic journey. This website seems to be reigniting a whole lot of artistic flames. You seem to be well on your way towards your objective. As for crits, the RPG guy seems to need a bigger range of values, especially darks/blacks. He is very gray. Also, give us your full non cropped drawings so we can appreciate them better.
Looking forward to seeing you progress along your journey!
Eon - Thanks for stopping by and taking time to reply. I agree with your crit about the values. I was really trying to push all I could out of my HB. I think the problem was my greasy old neadable eraser kind of ruined the paper so it wasnt catching the graphite to well. I've been studying great renderers like DanielC, and DirtyC, to try and learn better pencil rendering, and doing alot of photo refs.
Glory666 - Thank you also for stopping by and taking the tiem to reply. Yes my Skull leopard warrior is my character called Dark Ranger. I've been messing round with his appeance for a long time now. Basically he kills poachers and anyone f'n with his forest/jungle. I plan to start making a comic about him.
He's a little SP i did today. Pencils with some digi touches. and a digi paint. the lines were done by my friend and it's kind of sposed to be his street fighter alter ego.
nice start interested to see more of the shady guy, mby a digi, you could develop him into a totally awsome character, not that he isnt good already
Thanks for coming by my corner. This is a real good start! I agree with some of the pointers in terms of studying values. Keep it coming and the best of luck to you on your journey, I'm looking forward to seeing more

Yep its a nice start. You are passionate about what you wanna do and mature so take the hard road now.Now the amazing adventure begins.
Wanna use your character in a comic?storyboard or something? give us an example how he seems in different actions/angles etc.It may be tiring but it adds+skill points to your anatomy
Remember that a good drawing makes a good painting(lol yesterday i found out that Marko Djurdjevic said the same thing on an interview)
I wanna see your progress
Thnx for stopping by my sketchbook
Ok here's a little update. I did some anatomy studies, and a few hours of posemaniacs yesterday. Although I'm only posting some of the anatomy studies, there were a few more pages but takes ages to scan A3.
Also I did another sketch of my character. And because it has generated some interest I decided I will post some old siloettes of the character and sketches.
I've got life drawing tonight so will post the results next udate. Also gonna do some candid drawing of people in public today, cos it's a nice sunny day.
Thanks everyone for the advice and encouragement it means alot to me.
So far you doin great, you have the potetional to go even further man. Don't stop drawing, I'm gonna periodically check your sketch book so please don't disapoint!
Mini-update. 3 Sketches from my life drawing class, 10 minute sittings, on A3 Cartridge paper. With a Black faber castel polychromos pencil. There were heaps more of the shorter sittings and warmups, ton to scan tho.
I think my proportions are getting better, I gotta put more time into the hands and feet tho.
I'm thinking of getting a new scanner because my current one tends to grey out everything.
I spent my whole day yesterday watching movies and jotting down ideas for concepts I'd like to draw so gonna have some done for next update.
I've come up with my own version of posemaniacs. This is for Windows users only but Mac might have something similar.
Firstly on the desktop go into settings > screensaver. Chose the My pictures folder slideshow. Then in your computer have a folder that contains a good selection of poses. You can then set the screensaver to come on in 1 minute and toggle how long the pics stay up for. I find it good to warmup with some posemaniacs then do this screensaver thing after for more practice.
Hi CamSyko, i ike your anatomy studies: very detaile and very clean! In your pencil work you should try to focus more on your lines to describe volumes. Give accents on edges in the darker parts (usually the buttom side of what you draw) etc. Check out the tutorials of Vilppu if you have the occasion. Keep going!
IMO bit too much black used in your self-portrait, none the less u are drawing well and making progress
Hygami - Thanks alot man, really appreciate it. I'm a fan of yours.
voxmortem - Yeah I agree mate, it's the result of me trying to tweak my crap scanner in photoshop. I'm getting a new one soon.
Bartovan - Thanks for the advice Bart. You are very right. I have had a look at alot of vilpuu's stuff and yeah he's a master of that. I will definately work on it. I also looked at DangerousLlamas figure drawing thread and really noticed it.
Comixnut - It's coming along well. Although just trying to do alot of studies lately, but the ideas are definately spawning in the back of my mind. btw this is my new sketchbook, figured I'd start with a clean slate and really stay consistent.
DaStreets - Appreciate it, it's comments like that that really make it rewarding.
Jedininjaman - Thank you very much sir, very encouraging. And I will take your advice on board.
Ok not much today but it's something to keep the ball rollin'
I spent most of the day at the beach so didnt get much draing done. But here's what I scrounged together.
The cityscape is Sydney from observation from the back of the Ferry. And some sketcheroos done on other forms of public transport. On the way home I stopped by the library and scored Hogarths Dynamic Anatomy and Pecks anatomy for the artist so will be doing alot of studies from them.
I'm really excited about everything lately. And having my head in art so much is making me appreciate the smallest of details, definately reassures me I'm doing the right thing. Anyway enough talk, Next update should be more interesting.
A bit of a sad update considering the time since last post. Just keeping this book consistent so here's some life drawings and some doodles, plus my WIP sketch for this weeks Chow, Baba Yaga.
I'm back at college now and got some good projects, so will post the results of those very soon.
Just a mini-update. Some progress on this week's ChoW, Baba-Yaga. Had to rework the design a little to include the broom and mortar and pestle.
And a wip personal work, just a vampire sorta guy in attack mode.
Got my website registered just gotta make a few changes before it's up. Will be http://www.lyphorm.com . Lyphorm is the name of my business.
Hey, nice start.
crits: More dynamic, wooshyness, your last effort is a good start in this direction i think.
Legs are too big, compared to heads; measure with heads (or something else, measure!) - the vitruvian man has 8 and a half, in profile, I believe.
Remember everything feeds into everything else, don't get sucked into details, details, seen as a concept in terms of drawing are just smaller shapes in larger shapes.
Agree with Helioth, sometimes proportions are wrong (facial and body proportions), but nothing impossible to fix with some study
Keep it up!
sorry for my lil comment, but I cant express my self longer than that in english, coouse is not my mother tongue
But Complementing the post above, you have imagination. You put a lot of interesting accesories in your characters, but it will be nice to see some more defined poses and bodies thats it
thanks for stopping by my sb
Helioth: Thanks alot for noticing, I will certainly work harder and take more consideration of such mistakes.
Clodioz: No problem, thanks and your advice is most welcome.
Here's a little update on my vampy. Just before I start some school work. I don't think I'll finish my Baba yaga in time but will finish it in the next few days. I kind of got stuck with it because I need more practice doing backgrounds, was trying to paint some trees and stuff but yeah... anyway
I can't yet go straight into colour without getting the values right so currently I always start rendering in greyscale.
Your pencil work is getting really a lot better, also the facial proportions seem to be getting better so just keep going and everything will be fine.
A shame you won't finish the baba Yaga, I liked her pose a lot.
The values on the vampire could be a lot more dramatic to get a nice effect, but I guess you decide what you want.
Hey, good to see you trying new things. Personally i don't like the composition and colour FOCUS of your last piece at all, it's very effective at drawing my eyes to the bottom left of the piece... ...where there is nothing.
Play around with this though, I think you are onto something!
Helioth: I completely agree, I will work on it soon, I kind of got sick of looking at it.
Finally got my website launched, a joint portfolio thing with a friend. The gallery still needs some work and of course some better art so it's pushing me to paint and draw harder. If you want to check it out it's http://www.lyphorm.com
Might not seem like I've been working hard by looking at my regularity and quality of posts but there's heaps I just can't bother to scan or is floating around on my computer. Although next post I will post more sketches to show for critique and advice.
Here's a speedpaint I did today, haven't done one in ages but I've been watching some videos and I think it's a really valuable skill to master as a concept artist. This took about 1 1/2 hours.
i like seeing model studies. keep it up.
Nice colours in the last one. Speedpaints are good, and you'll get better as time goes by. Atm she just seems to not have any bones in her body, but by studyding anatomy, you'll master that in time.
The vampire looks nice, though I suggest putting more work in the background and making it into a proper one, also if its very basic. His knees need more work, too.
