Hey Alex! Great work man, the latest piece is looking great. I don't want to throw a wrench in everything you've been doing, but I think I actually prefer the first version that you posted, in post 791. I know this is going against most of what everyone has said so far, but I like the lower contrast on the figure and closer values.
There are many ways to lead the eye around focal points, and I think you were doing it great in the first image, with shape design, composition, color, level of detail. I feel like there isn't really a need to throw in contrasty areas all over the figure. Sometimes it isn't about having a wide range of values, but more controlling the subtle values that are closer together. Of course, strong values are great for the kind of work you do, with fantasy illustration, especially on trading cards, but it's something to think about. Keep it up man, it's looking great!
wow thx all for critiques, looks like I still have some work to do on that one!
Vodus - thanks! I did make some of those changes too
NickyB - thanks mate, i did work on the foreground a bit more!
Mila - Thx! I have looked at lots of horses too =) I think maybe there many variations!
Blackspot - thx for crit I shall take a look!
P Sage - wow thanks for your insight, hadn't really picked up on that stuff
Jasper - lols yeah I prefer the earlier versions but I always cave under the contrast pressure everyone tells me. I am trying to push lower-contrast as most my fave artists are, one day when im better Ill be able to think more myself hopefully. thx for the advice!!
few updates, some quick studies of various stuff!
lil fairy foo foo ting done
finished this pretty much I think - for now :p
WIP - cc moar than welcomes! obviously some of it is still unfinished :o
Cool pics i especially like your colors, though imo the faces of the characters could use some more work.
About the last portrait wip:
a. The proportions- the eyes seem to be a bit too high, as well as the eye brow line. (try to re-check it with a ref or with a basic face construction scheme)
b. The nose- seems to be too narrow and too long because of the issues with the face proportions.
c. Her left (our right) cheek looks bigger and wider than the right.
d. Her left (our right) eye is a bit higher than the right one.
e. Her left (our right) eye brow comes down to close to the nose, and it looks bigger and longer than the right one.
f. Her ear, looks a bit awkward as if it twisted towards us.
Anyways, those are my 2 cents, hope it helped a lil, keep up with the awesome work!
Wow.. the work is stunning in here Alex! =) Mmm, you asked for some feedback on your portrait =) Would say the eye on the warmer side, it feels slightly too far to the left, would maybe bring it in a touch closer. =) Good luck with finishing =) Cheers Cheers! =)
fallenangel - thx for ubercrit!! I will mess with the proportions some more As for symmetry, it's intentional to an extent - I wanted slightly differing sides, I mean, faces I have studied aren't symmetrical at all - a lot more so than this.
Psage - Yeah I love Disney stills I have a whole folder of them!
Kungfoo - Thx brooo - pretty sure I checked the eye distances :o
little mini-series of covers I've been doing for FFG's Call of Cthulu games, more to come!
Man maaaan, you improved soooo much, i iwhs i had more time to do studies myself. I love the lady on the horse, it has an mystic asian character to it. But the fairy? I won't lie to you, she's ... not so pretty as the rest of the imagery here.
Have a great day.
Very Very cool!!!! I really enjoyed your works from how u began to now. Amazing hard work!!!!!!!!!! Keep going please!!!
MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS--->http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...d.php?t=207321
I can't say anything that wasn't said already...
I love the last ones The lady on horses pic has such nice atmosphere, I could look at those fog/haze in the background for long. The portrait is nice too.
Those FF Games covers are freakin schweet! Especially digging the first one...lotza depth in that one like where the green light is reflected in to the hillside and gravestones.
I like how the woman on the horse turned out.
I also like your new wip, the portrait of the woman. The eyes are ver well done, they have a very unique exotic look.
My only suggestion would be to fix her ear, I don't think it would be sticking out that much.
Awesome stuff. Keep it up
Wow your updates is very very gorgeous. Color, anatomy, styles.
I liked the faces in this page
Sorry for bad english
Thx all! Will reply next tiem gotta run
update on this portrait cc welcome! I did change some of the proportions, ear is still a bit dodge! all the addons were in my drawing i think its quite busy now but i quite like busy, thinking there is too much highlight on the left of the hat!
Wow nice detail on the last one O_o
Also love the realism on your life drawings and the studies on the early pages. The improvement from then is just amazing.
I am inspired haha. Incredible stuff!
Apart from the tattoo not looking as if its on a contoured surface and below some skin....that is freakin AWESOME!! well done!
Right some time for replies!

Kidult - thx! oh I have trouble making the tattoo realistic, hard, tried many layer modes!
hey alex, your work is looking well rendered and soft and shit like that
but i think at the moment it's too much in your comfort zone
you should let go, say 'fuck it', get loose, have fun, PAINT.
another thing with your illustrations, i'm thinking you need to have a clear focal point. and render that area up more, it seems like your rendering/detailing EVERYWHERE, which makes it confusing and we don't know where to look
sorry if that's too blunt
i really like where this latest version is headed! the details look great bro! you know i had a similar thought about that blue highlight. it looks great, but does seem to be a bit eye catching, taking away slightly from the rest of the image. but the materials and everything look awesome! keep going!
